Loved London in the early 70s it was a fun safe place to be. The nightclubs, shopping for clothes and shoes. Walking halfway home until the night bus came along all good fun and most of all SAFE. Wish I could go back to those times .

@Here to comment/watch weird stuff yep . For some reason old videos of London seem to be a gathering place for idiots . They love a cliché - like ' when London was London ' or ' I don't see much diversity in the past ' and that's because they're too thick to think for themselves . And they really love to portray themselves as victims , imagining that they've been ' ethnically cleansed ' from London . Truth is all the cockneys pissed of to Basildon , that's why it's such a terrible place .

Thanks for this video. Around the time of this film my godfather took me down to London for the first time. I'd be about 13 then. We visited most of the sites that were popular back then, even walking down Downing Street, past No.10, Westminster, and yes...also inside the House of Commons. Peers used to park their cars outside the H.o.P. in those days. Also I remember seeing a theatre sign for the Mousetrap, and the old Windmill Theatre. And the Underground was an education for a young kid in 1971. A few years later I'd be using the LU three or four times a year between Waterloo and Kings Cross. Apparently the city is really expensive these days as well as pretty unpleasant.

Society generally then, was more 'egalitarian' (less every man for himself), probably more 'left of centre', and definitely less obsessed with money and consumerism. Old people ACTUALLY lived in central London then - this seems strange to believe now. Ordinary people (including the elderly) could also afford to live right in the centre. This all changed in the 1980s when as a society we became more consumer obsessed (blame Thatcher for this!)......rents and house prices went up, meaning old people couldn't afford to live where they had......all their lives. Also fewer cars and more buses, meaning that was easier for old people to get up to London in one go. Remember also that the buses back then were probably better and more reliable than the trains. I remember you could get one bus from Mortlake (nr Richmond) right up to Aldwych. Long distance bus routes no longer exist as people have cars, and trains are much better now. Can't imagine being on one bus all that way now! .....that's what enabled old people to get from their front doors to the West End easily....they didn't have to change buses or trains.

I was a school kid back in the 70s but sometimes I along with my mates would go up the West End. It was fun. We once saw Jenny Hanley, from Magpie etc walking along Compton Street. She must have been the first TV star I ever saw in real life. She was stunningly beautiful (She still looks well even today in her late 70s) but I was only around 13 back then, way too young for her to even notice me 🤣 Happy days though. Things sure are different now, it's mainly because the older generation and demographic back then had different ways of doing things, they were more reserved and kept things hidden, but they are now largely long gone. It wasn't necessarily better back then, there were many issues, just like today, it's certainly a different style now though. Many thanks.
