When you opened the hood on that Bronco, it looked so much like my '85 K-5 Blazer! I replaced that ridiculous "feedback" carburetor with an Edelbrock 650cfm 4bbl with mechanical linkage, and Edelbrock air filter and an Edelbrock "performer" intake manifold. It's only a 305 engine, but what a difference! I've owned it now for 25 years, and it's never given me a minutes trouble, other than replacing normal maintenance items. Hope your Bronco can give you the satisfaction my Blazer has! (PS: it also has the factory "heavy duty suspension" and it rides like it, too!) God bless and good luck!

Instead of welding the rear diff, you could install a separate hand-brake line to the wheel that likes to spin more, if you ever get stuck you yank that hand brake and you'll get all the torque to the other wheel.

I had a 82 f150 mud truck. 300 six, 4 speed, Dana 44 front with lockers, 9 inch rear with lockers, 4.11 gears, 3 inch lift with 35 inch tires. Thing was a beast never did get stuck with it. Me and my buddies would go mudding and we would go 2wd until we needed 4wd. Usually the guy in front would need 4wd and it would follow in line to everyone putting it in 4wd. My truck well most of the time I would get moving again in 2wd. I was the only one with lockers. Only bad part about having a truck like that is if a buddy goes out and plays by himself and gets stuck I was the first one to get called. Still at 2 in the morning I was always ready to go help.

Nostalgia... In high school and college I had an '84 Bronco with a straight six and a four speed. That is the one vehicle I regret selling, even 22 years later. I suggest some kind of locker in the rear. I had a lunchbox locker in the rear diff, made that truck unstoppable! Plus I kinda liked the ratchet sound when I made tight turns on pavement.

For an advanced geek this makes perfect sense but for me, a noob it's a "little" more difficult. My question is very simple for a professional ,I have a 1986 bronco XLT , 351W engine and a C6 tranny. When I bought the truck it did not have a carburetor. Little research revealed that it had a Holley 4180-C . I plan to install a Edelbrock 1906 and I have no idea what vacuum hoses I need to hook to the new carburetor for street drive ... I've done so much research and still I could not find an answer to my simple question...Thanks for posting!

I have an '84, it was my Grandfathers. You are right, they do drive "big". The short wheelbase makes them use all the road. That lift kit didn't help. The rear window motor is the same as one for the doors. I cannot remember if it is left or right. It is an easy fix. Make sure to rust proof the inside of the tailgate while you are there.

The locks just connect each wheel hub to the differential. Locked-in is just like the rear axle with an open differential.

I drove a 1985 Ford pickup with the same setup. If the hubs were locked and you engaged the transfer case the front tires would scrub during turns on dry pavement. It all depends on how the front axle is configured as to whether the wheels slip with the hubs locked.

That's strange about the differentials, I own an '89 and I used to own a '91 Bronco(4th generation) and they both came equipped from the factory with limited slip differential. The third generation(bull nose) yours must not have? If yours is the 8.8 inch differential, they are fairly inexpensive and easy to find. Ford put them in the Explorers, they are easy to swap out. While you're in there change your axel/wheel bearings and seals. That way the whole rear end is essentially new. P.S. you need a slide hammer to get the wheel bearing out. And don't forget the friction modifier.

  • @DavoShed

Diagonal wheel spin is usually what stops a lot of 4wd without LSD or diff locks. Surprisingly stabbing the brakes very quickly with your left foot can transfer drive from the spinning wheel to the wheel with traction. I tested this once by parking my 4wd on sand and completely digging under two diagonal wheels. Not sure how you would operate the truck with the diff “welded up” Fine on loose dirt and snow but you’d be stuffed doing a u turn on a hard surface. You’d be scrubbing tyres or snapping something else. A limited slip diff is limited not locked. On demand diff locks are a different thing again. I expect you understand all this stuff but some of your viewers may not. Perhaps an explanation of the pros and cons would be a good subject for another video.
