Taking My Friend On Her FIRST BACKPACKING TRIP! | Miranda in the Wild
Ойын-сауық
I took my friend on her first backpacking trip! My college roommate and best friend, Pam, recently decided to try backpacking for the first time! I took her to REI to get fitted for a pack, and then we hiked the 9-mile Wallace Lake Loop Trail here in Washington State. Watch the video to see how Pam did on her first backpacking trip!

REI please take the popularity of this video as a sign that we want more plus size options! It's nearly impossible to find plus size hiking clothes that are ACTUALLY plus size, and when we do find them, they're marked up 200% from what standard sizes have to pay ($90 for a pair of shorts). There's a HUGE market for reasonably priced plus size hiking clothes!
And let's add a warm thought for the camera crew, who hoofed it to the top probably carrying the same camping gear, _plus_ all the camera equipment, running ahead, lagging behind and catching up, to get the perfect shots we're enjoying here. :-)
I'm really happy that Miranda reminded Pam that it's her first time backpacking when she was mentioning her weight. 🥰 People that are plus-sized are always thinking about how our weight limit us, forgetting that a thinner person could also find a similar situation challenging! A very wholesome moment. And also Pam, thank you for being brave enough to share your vulnerability ❤

Poles really do help your stability. When you feel like you want something to hold onto to pull yourself up the hill poles help with that. You push up using your arms and legs. Need something to lean on mid stride, poles. Going down hill helps brace your downward momentum. A difficult rock or tree branch to straddle, poles. Crossing a creek, you can test the path ahead with the poles before you use your feet. At first it was a bit awkward (I broke a bone in my foot as a kid and had to use crutches, crossed them in front of me and fell flat on my face, sooo) knowing my clutzyness I practiced walking on sidewalk to get my rhythm, (with backpack on) then grass, then on hills, then on a sandy lake beach which included rocks and branches to go over. There are great videos on utube that can guide you. Finally they do help my knees. You feel exhausted and wobbly during and after, but.....so proud of yourself because you did it. Your lungs are clear your mind is open to the beauty and the possibilities. The stresses of the trail are Not the ones at home. These are ones you conquer one foot in front of the other. What a great friend you have. There is scientific evidence," out in nature" helps our brains and our physical well-being. Good for you. Enjoy your new found life style.

This is definitely one of my favorite videos. My face hurts from smiling. Thanks for sharing your friendship and vulnerability.
Awe this was really a sweet thing to watch. This is what friends do. Thank you REI!
Great job ladies
Love this so much! :) Thanks, REI for being inclusive (and I love seeing that Gregory pack fit like a glove). Having packs in both plus-size and standard size is a GAME CHANGER! Happy trails! ❤️

Hello how are you doing my friend
As a Brit, "Wankered" means to be very drunk. "Knackered" would be very tired. Keep up the good work!

This can't be true. I get called a wanker all the time and I haven't had a sip of alcohol!
Go Pam! I just got back from my first backpacking trip (my best friend took me too), so I was so glad to find this! I totally identify with the exhaustion and all the feelings. I'm taking today as a rest day for sure (got back last night). One thing that I found to be a really helpful addition to my pack was hiking poles!
Awesome ya guys. Cool friendship. Beautiful views. Pam, you rocked your 1st trip. Little jealous over here.
Wow, this Video made me cry and laugh. Thank you for showing the emotional side of backpacking too, the worries, the exhaustion and the joys. I had a very emotional experience hiking uphill a few days ago and this makes me realize, that it's normal and fine. Also, Pam is so likeable! Maybe we can see her in other videos, too :))

I'm appreciating the chaos Oscar the cat is making in this video.

He’s always been a force of chaos 😂
This is amazing. When she started to cry I could totally relate. I hike and mountain bike a ton but there is always a day where I break down a bit and just think "can I do this?" And after a few good tears it becomes so obvious I can do it! Great video

Never give up! Thanks for watching and sharing. 😊
You girls are a hoot together. So glad you enjoyed your first hike & camp. I need a buddy to hike with like you gals. Great to share the experience.
Nice job Pam and Miranda - can't wait for more episodes of "Miranda and Pam in the wild".
This is such a great hiking video. Hiking can be tough, tiresome, and all out draining. Especially for a first timer. Something keeps us coming back and truly loving it though. Very proud of your friend Miranda and welcome her to the club.
Pam, you are delightful and it was such a joy to witness your joy.
One of my favorite episodes! As a plus size avid backpacker and hiker I so appreciate this video! Hikers and backpackers come in all shapes and sizes.

Hi Amy
Definitely one of my favorite episodes! Taking a friend backpacking for the first time will make great memories for both of you.
Bring Pam out for another adventure! Awesome watching 2 friends conquer the wilderness together! =)
Pam, Wallace Lake is no easy beginner hike, and that's coming from a guy who's been there a bunch of times (*it was so much easier when we just rode up there on motorcycles). You should be so proud of yourself, and as others have said, more for your attitude than just the huge accomplishment that this particular hike is... well done! Miranda, I'm a bit surprised you didn't set Pam up with trekking poles (*even though I don't use them myself). You did an awesome job as hike leader, going Pam's pace, never pushing her, and celebrating her fortitude the whole way! Another great show - gosh darn!

Hi! Miranda did have poles available for me to try, but I chose not to. I was worried they’d affect my balance, I’m pretty klumsy. But maybe I was wrong, and I should give them a try on my next adventure!

@@pamlavallee9051 Yes, I'm sorry Pam, I read that after I wrote my comment. That's the beauty for the straps on trekking poles though, you can just let go of them when you need to use your hands. *I tend to leave them, and walking sticks, in the woods - never remembering them until they're way too far behind to go back for. So, again, yes give them a try - worst case scenario, you strap them to Miranda's pack when she's not looking :)
Loved the first episode of "Pam in the wild". A great episode to show to friends to get them to backpack. If the Seattle REI is considered a mega -version, then glad to know the Asheville NC is comparable. I believe Brits and Aussie viewers would bust a gut laughing about Miranda's alternate expression for "tuckered out"

Yup! That face Miranda pulled when Pam said "I wish to not die"? That was me. In Britain w*nkered also means drunk.
Your adventure just made me say, "I'm going Backpacking this weekend with my best Friend in the whole world, My Wife"! Thank you guys 👋😉
