Take Sharpening Further With Frequency Separation

Generally, we'd all like to improve the sharpness of our astro images, and frequency separation can help. But frequency separation does not, in itself, improve sharpening. Rather, it divides an image into two layers, one containing color and luminosity information, and one containing detail information. Sharpening operations can then be performed specifically on the detail layer, reducing the chance of devolution into artifacts, grittiness, and allowing for closer inspection of sharpening effects.
This is the first episode of a new five part series on improving sharpness and image quality.

I use this in portrait photography within photoshop. Never did it cross my mind to use it with Astro. Great tip!!!!

I'm highly impressed with your graphic design skills, as well as the precise explanations of the ideas, behind the process. Needless to say - the final result is a brilliant example of a real mastership - inspiring, creative and exciting. Accept my huge respect for your outstanding job. Many thanks.

Just gave this a try and my gosh the detail you can pull out before the image gets too gritty!

It's a method that's done very well for me. Works for most, but not all, images.

This is an excellent result! Being I am a Photoshop user, can this be done in some way, with the High Pass Filter? I would definitely like to try this technique.

I haven't used PS in a decade, but there is a frequency separation tool. Go to the Image drop down menu, go to Apply Image and you will find a frequency separation tool in it.

Excellent as usual. Wish I could follow it. Did I hear correctly that you have to go from affinity back to pixinsight to use noisextreminator? Your license should allow you to install also on affinity. The photoshop plugin works in Affinity.

I do frequently transport files back and forth between Affinity Photo and PixInsight (or even other developing apps), often using PI as a platform to execute the Xterminators. Sadly, NXT is unreliable on Affinity Photo. It often freezes. Maybe it's better these days.

@@SKYST0RY I have not had any problems so far with it in affinity. I am running the Mac version.

You can work around the NXT and BXT steps by sharpening and denoising with other methods. The main thing is to separate the high and low frequency bands so that you can work independently on the high frequency band that affects sharpness.
