Finding the Cat's Eye Core: The Toughest Image I've Ever Developed

Some DSOs can have such wildly varied brightness that detail is lost beneath. The Cat's Eye Nebula is one such. Within the Cat's Eye is a planetary nebula that surrounds a dying Wolf-Rayet star. The core nebula is so bright compared to the outer nebula that attempts to develop the Cat's Eye will end with the core totally blown out every time. Addressing such a problem means processing your data more than once, each time developing for entirely different conditions.

Well done on the channel growth (it's more than tripled in the last four-five months!). A reflection of the quality uploads. Thank you so much for sharing all this information.

Darks helped more awhile back, with older sensors. But now that kind of noise is virtually eliminated by the tech itself.

Thanks for this amazing video. My friends are always surprised when I say that I need to learn the tools and get better at my presentation. I tell them there’s no fixed recipe for all the targets, they are all special in some way. I noticed the CC from Nebula Photos used lucky imaging on the core and was able to use 0.5s exposures because it’s so bright. Shows that the quiver is loaded with all kinds of different tools! I should’ve started a little earlier!

I think of the tools as the brushes and paints of an artist. You can apply them using a variety of techniques. The end result depends more on your skill with the techniques than which tools you use, so long as you are using the right tools for the right jobs.

@@SKYST0RY yes that’s a better analogy! Currently all my brushes look like scrub brushes

awesome stuff! I've been doing deep sky AP for about a year and I was blown away by the difficulty of this target. I will certainly be trying some of your techniques on my next attempt at this one!

It's a very challenging target. And I really need to spend another couple nights imaging it to get adequate signal strength.

If we didn't have a NASA photo of the core but still had the same tools, where would one stop processing? :) I enjoyed the video, and all that matters is that you are happy with the result!

NASA does do better. One day I hope to have a 12" SCT or maybe RC or PlaneWave. I bet I can push it a lot closer to a NASA image then. I've seen some people get much closer to it. I also need to put in another 2 or 3 nights with ideal seeing on the target. It really isn't finished yet.
