Breaking Down Messier 106 to Portray All the Information

The M 106 galaxy is bright and large as galaxies go in our night sky. But it has a problem. In the compact space of the camera sensor, M 106 contains structures that can only be seen at widely varying ranges of illumination. Stretch the histogram too much and obscure subtle structures in bright regions. Stretch it too little and dim structures like its complex rim will be lost in darkness. The solution is to divide the image into multiple layers, develop each layer for a specific range of luminosity, then composite the layers back onto each other in such a way that all the information is preserved. It's almost like folding light back on itself.

Ooooh, I've been collecting a bunch of h-alpha data on this galaxy. My LRGB data is slow going due to weather. Loved this video, super informative!

ok seriously, where is your noise? by the time i got those outer rings visible, background was covered in hideous rgb noise. 80x180s, 400 iso, C6N f/5 and sony a6500. I fell like i am really missing a trick. I had darks from the same night, but still... stacking in DSS

I use many strategies to address noise, starting all the way back with camera and filter selection, how I shoot images, and layers of noise removal in early and late processing. I will make a video covering it soon.

I'm with you. I've had as much 3 hours per filter and after following several tutorials including one from James Ritson. It still looks like dog doo.

@@newzerozeroone I will seriously make a comprehensive "how to kill noise video" this weekend.

@SKYST0RY I've already learned so much from your videos. Especially when it comes to processing in Affinity.

Interesting, however I think GHS will save a ton of work from blending all sorts of brightness, especially HDR galaxy, now it looks like eaten on the top and button of the galaxy.

I'd have to actually see a workflow in which GHS does this quickly and effectively.
