I think its the lower midfield that would decide how the game goes.If Chelsea find themselves outnumbered 2v3 in midfield during build up then the wings would be the key.But if they are able to find a way through the first build up phase then the wing backs will play as wingers to stretch the ManCity backline and create space for Werner and Havertz

Chelsea would always attract big name managers an ever hot prospects because of their owner's ambition and willingness to always back the man at the helm. However, their sacking culture can be a turn off at times as noted by reliable journalists who mentioned that this culture played a big role in pep turning down the role on a number of occasions during the last couple years. However, tuchel has been given a fantastic squad to work with. Chelsea has become everything that I wanted to my club to evolve into after the golden arsenal era of the invincibles... European giants. From top to bottom we have a clear lack of leadership, unrealistic objectives since the investment does not match it and an obvious culture of accepting the state of things as is (be it good or bad). Why would a manager like tuchel, allegri, simeone, ten haag or even luis Enrique take on such a position at arsenal where you basically have to be a politician talking about how things ought to be rather than what it is;Not being given a war chest to address the obvious frailties within the squad; inexperienced CEO and technical director who is supposed to provide you with direction, but instead you may be giving them directives which makes your job even harder. It's so rotten that we cannot even reap any sort of meaningful success again. So rotten that we have to dig up the seed of mediocrity that was planted in our club in 2007 when KSE took over and replant it with the seed of success. We are just awful on an off the field. A poorly run club with no direction whatsoever. By the way, sorry about my rant

Tbf Man City's percentage of rotation was a lot higher than Chelsea's, and this time it's a Man City B team without De Bruyne. Still, Tuchel managed to beat City twice with their B team with and without De Bruyne. It's basically like Tuchel letting Pep know that Chelsea's B team are at least as strong as City's, or even arguably stronger since they beat them twice with significant results both in Cup and in the PL. Suppode Chelsea are getting a big signing this summer, let's say s.o like Lukaku, or Haaland (though unlikely), or Lewandowski, H Kane etc... That would be a terrifying thought that would keep Pep up at night.

As FMS said, its a tactical trap to play the opposing team for offside. It helps regain possession of the ball by fooling the opposition into thinking that they have a direct route to score a goal.

@@FootballMadeSimple - However to give a true overall picture on the ebbs and flows of the game, the team who attacks and get caught in an offside trap still should have a higher DG since that is the whole point of measuring this particular statistics, it is there to measure the offensive intent of the team Don't be simple brother, the fact that the defence executes a well drilled offside trap doesn't negate the issue at hand

I also see Chelsea having a high back line in this game, which I don't think we would see in the champions league final.

I think Tuchel is just experimenting with tactics in case Chelsea concedes in the final and would have no choice but to press high. And yes, Chelsea usually doesn't operate with a high back line in defense.

Honestly I think he was genuinely experimenting which was the perfect time to. He has absolutely nothing to lose in the league (they're winning it lets be honest) and he wanted to try something different against a manager who's already bested him this season. Probably smart that he did this experiment now so he can get a sense of what he wants to do in the final against us.

Nobody’s talking about a certain Gilmore that played a full game bossing Rodri in the middle of the pack. That’s an insurance policy if anything happens to Kante for the finals hopefully Kovacic is back on 🔥. The main reason we are doing this well comes down to science, Pep’s City have been intense for 4 seasonslikewise Klopp’s Liverpool, hence the downturn. City usually score in the first third of the second half but vs Chelsea, they have been knackered by halftime. Chelsea have small players who can run with the ball in linear and multidirectional directions while City have a lot of big, tall players that are disadvantaged and also tired from the hectic season. Usually, teams arrive a little knackered at the UCL finals but not this Chelsea team

Great stuff always learn something new but can't wait for the final it will be interesting no doubt

Guardiola outplayed in 2 concurrent games by Tuchel. That means a lot.

City xG is high because of the missed penalty. To be fair they shouldn't have had a penalty because Chelsea were down a man and waiting to sub in Zouna but referee started the play. Plus there was not enough contact for it to be a penalty. Jesus made the most of it. Overall Chelsea deserved the win. Should have scored 5-6 in the second half. Reece James ate Mendy alive.

@@jpman3963 He isn't. Computers generate the stats. Offsides don't count in XG that's why Chelsea's is lower. Otherwise Chelsea would have at least 3 xg. Yes, most of City's XG is from the penalty which I believe should be around 0.7-0.8XG. Sterling should have had a red.

city didn't create more than Chelsea. the pen alone increases city's xG by 0.8, while 1-2 extremely dangerous Chelsea crosses that didn't end up in a shot for the smallest margins aren't counted in xG, so Chelsea were the better team and created more. don't even get me started on the 3 offside goals

I think Pep is opening up more to the idea that football doesn't always have to be tiki-taka. We saw it on the second leg vs Paris and now with a back line of 3 (5 in defense), which as you explained it made long balls more of a threat, but sacrificing on the build up through the middle (Rodri was pretty much absent in the build up).

City were trying to injure Chelsea players! 😠

This game we missed mount he is reliable in switching from attack to midfield while pressing. But he still lacks the through ball. Gilmour played very well but he still has this tendency of going either side or back ward he will not pass straight.

@@FootballMadeSimple ziyech and pulisic both were quite static would occasionally drop between the lines. Mount would have been good.

I agree what u said, peps team lacked what. But i also think individual errors cost ct the game. Like the first goal, it came out of nowhere. Had rodri been lil careful it'd not have been a goal.

Yeah we're too quick to criticise often. I think pep's tactics generally worked

The difference between halves could be summed up by Gilmour. 1st half - struggled 2nd half - pendulum-like His second half stats must have been mad. Never lost the ball. Took out 3 leading to the disallowed goal. So cool under pressure, a very Pep-like player.

Guardiola was experimenting with a back three. Chelsea is giving him headaches this time.

I didn't understand what was Pep's vision about that match.Natural wingers playing as the attacking midfielder? Was he trying something new which he can use in the UCL final?

imo, it's hard to find a good formation to counter back 3 formation. if you use 433 against chelsea who always ready to use longball to Werner, it will hurt City more. the only counter is using back 3 against back 3.

This was a match where stats do not paint the full picture. Chelsea outclassed City

Aguero pen was pure class tho

i think Pep make a good job, cause Tuchel system is very very hard to broke, but Pep have a solution(the first coach) and with a little chance can win this game.

Analyzing chelsea games against Madrid and 2 last games against city. Chelsea haven't change much tactically. This is a disadvantage for the UCL. Pep will also have an FA final to studyTuchel tactics facing Leceister. On the other hand Pep never played his real game facing chelsea in last too matches.

Pep wanted to mirror Chelsea as they had a "3 at the back" formation. However Walker sitting deep may have been a better option than Ake as Walker is fast and can mark Werner.

I think guardiola has found a way to break the Chelsea team ....but he will have to use a better personnel there... But Chelsea would also replace some personnel too

Pep is using this game to find out more about Chelsea’s unique 3421 tactic. I think he more or less has found the answers he needs for the finals. Torres and sterling starting deep in midfield is not unheard of in pep’s opinion. Remember how pep played robben and ribery in central midfield during his bayern munich days? Absolute genius. It allowed them to abuse half spaces tremendously. Replace sterling with mahrez and foden and we could have a high scoring finals.

He didn't play Robben or Ribery in midfield...he did play Alaba and Lahm in midfield and let Muller and Thiago/Gotze govin the half-space

I think that this shape will useful for the final for city. If they play the same false 9 system in Istanbul(or Villa Park), The front 4 of KDB, Mahrez, Silva and Foden will be better suited to make runs from deeper positions than Kun or Jesus. Maybe it might work.

peps experiment worked.. if the penalty went in its a different story..goal was to see if he could hit Chelsea on the wing ..in the CL final he will play his regular system but make his wing-backs hold wide, play someone beside /in front of rodri and allow runs from midfielders ...more solid defense and more ways to hurt Chelsea than this system

@@alternatefcs1644 going back to this post i'm actually surprised i was right..i've always studied pep teams and usually able to predict his moves ..and usually get them right and he wins.. this time he lost ....to be honest his thinking was that he had played both rodri and farna and lost against them twice so he was like why not gudun who can adapt and provide an attacking threat .. i and he didn't predict how weak the central defense will be without two players ahead of the back 3 ..actually he probably predicted it but underestimated it ...i think its less of rodri and ferna and more of 2 players ahead of back 3..banerdo and zincheko were playing too high up

@@alternatefcs1644 actually that system was designed like that so they could be more direct when they played Chelsea in the match you're talking about. the reason why rodri lost the ball was that sterling wasn't making a run which would have given him a direct forward pass, hence he held the ball and was dispossessed.. that's why pep was shouting at sterling after the goal. ...playing Gunda woud have actually negated what he was trying to do in that game.. but the bottom line is still that he needs that double defensive screen if he's gonna play the back 3 ..they never concede open goals when he does that .. even if rodri played in this game ..the system would still have that weak point..of not enough screeners

i think if he played his old system and started Jesus as the main striker he would have been more successful ..Chelsea play very much like they did under Conte and sarri but a lot more direct..and to negate those he played his system but would make sure his wing-backs stayed wide to force the pressure and negate runs of wing-backs and it generally worked with zinchenko. he tried to switch to that in the second half of the CL game but it was too late

One reason the XG for Chelsea was so low was because we were offside so many times. The game was a lot closer otherwise
