Chelsea were clearly trained very well in their positional play, something I wish Barca still had.

Its not just the training,its the in-game awareness these players have.U can buy 10 players for 100 million and can still end up with players having no idea when to run and when to stay.Credit to Tuchel as well cause this is just incredible at this point

The 5 vs 4 situations are very similar to the Germany x Portugal game at the euros. The difference is that the end product in this game was wide right (Reece James) while in the Euros game was wide left (Gosens).

I don't really go into analysis but I have to analyse Chelsea's first goal. Lukaku did what a target man should do. Hold the ball up. Held the ball, pass to Kovacic, Kovacic kicks it down to the right wing then James with the cross for the goal. Not a Chelsea fan(United fan) I enjoyed that goal

@@blues05 basically Tierney crossing into the box, arsenal not having any tall commanding players to head the ball in the box causing the ball to go out wide to the other wing where pepe would pick the ball up and pass it back to the midfield who would pass it back to the left wing where Tierney would attempt another cross. Rinse and repeat. This is the donut of shame.

Defenders in the EPL havent had to deal with an elite back to goal striker in awhile. They are too used to strikers with movement like Salah, mane, aguero, Kane, ings etc. Lukaku is something they are not used to.

Apparently there was just one element missing in Chelsea's setup last season, and Lukaku seems to have more than just filled it. Now that's a complete team and probably can win the Premier League. On the other hand, Unai Emery can deal with such tactical situations better than many managers. Good luck finding a better manager than him, Arsenal fans! Whom are you going to sack now?

Tierney was trying to mark 2 people the whole game i don’t understand why he didn’t have saka come back and help or xhaka slide over and try to help if arsenal makes this simple adjustment this a completely different game also mari got bullied by lukaku they should have had 1 or both of the midfield players come a little deeper to help deal with lukaku I understand there’s a reason arteta is a manager and im not but my god i cant wrap my head around why he didn’t adjust

That's the advantage of Chelsea playing 3421. Lukaku forces at least 2 players to marked him and when the wb goes up they easily have the advantage in number. That's why we often saw james and alonso free. I think Arsenal did tried it and that's what led to Chelsea's goals. When they all tried to ganking up on lukaku he'll just play one touch and space already opened up on the flank. I do agree on saka and pepe dropping to help the defence. I don't know why they don't do that but I think they just want to play counter attack maybe that's why they left the 3 at the front

@@h.z1793 but Chelsea formation wasn’t really a surprise some people might have not expected lukaku to play but it just seems like arteta was unprepared Chelsea run that 3-4-2-1 almost every game now and if your in a back 3 facing a back 4 it’s easy to create 2 v 1 situations with a winger and a wingback against the opponents fullback you have to have your winger track back to help defend this

@@chap5674 but the CHelsea is different, because they dont have The REAL winger, so they were outnumbered in midfield, in my opinion the Arsenal midfield was just outclased nothing less, nothing more, if they had pressure from midfield James and Alonso shouldnt do this runs behind defense

Kudos! Very good analysis. However , most of the examples are situational (which is important to decompose , of course). I would add more of helicopter view on tactical plan of both team, and how they adopted . And what Arsenal might have done different to be more effective VS chelsea side. But again, respect for the good analysis. You really Showed weaknesses of Arteta team with too narrow defending up the pitch, not tight pressing and too exposed spaces in the mid and wings areas. Great analysis, I don't have Chelsea as THE favorite but they are certainly a favorite. The improved roster on the field and Tuchel running the show definitely make them real contenders.

Intresting analysis, What programs are you using?

The way Lukaku BULLDOZED! that Arsenal defender - knocking him off his feet and onto the floor - before slotting home his goal: LOLAKU! That sums up Arsenal for the past 10 years: Bullied! Arteta may be a good manager, but as with previous Arsenal managers including the great Wenger: Too much emphasis on skill + tactics and ending up imbalanced when brute Power neutralizes that and bullies Arsenal into defeat. Now even their famed tactics and skill is falling apart (stats look grim). Arsenal have had SO MANY opportunities to sign a solid DM and start rebuilding a strong spine in their team, but instead their transfer policy has made so many inappropriate signings.

If you fine out that your team is number just try match up your opponents when defending simple or just simple drops on the limit space in behind. But all this cant works without efforts

So.... it would the fundamnetal reason (that is, the fact that starts the whole argument) of this result was the "mistake" of the half-assed pressing with Arsenal's No.7 and leaving James wide. His high pressing was inefffective and he was not able to go deep enough to stop the flanks from getting abused. Tactical mistake?

Also, the fact that Ben White was injured and Arteta had to play Mari instead. Tierney had to stay more central than he likes to be because he had to cover for Mari, leading to James abusing Arsenal's left side, which *may* not have been the case if Ben White were able to play.

Not really. You need Saka and Pepe to press the Chelsea midfield to keep Smith-Rowe from being isolated. The problem was that Xhaka simply sucks and doesn't know what he was doing.

I’m a huge Chelsea fan but I don’t like these early “we’re gonna win the league” proclamations. The season has just started. 36 more games to go. I can’t help but think of Jurgen Klopp sitting at home smiling his toothy smile thinking: this is great. All the pressure is on Chelsea. Which means we can continue to do our work quietly. And when we get into gear, very few will see us coming. They haven’t made any big signings but Liverpool, with their CB’s back is an extremely dangerous team. Even more than Chelsea or City.

I think it's intuitively obvious that Arteta is not, nor has ever been, a Premier League gaffer. It was like a master chess player taking on a 5 year old who still hasn't gotten the grasp of checkers. He's 2 more losses away from losing his job. Interesting to see these tactical videos lol. Chelsea are a well drilled team, with the way their players are looking to receive the ball, in certain positions/situations. Arsenal probably would've served themselves well, if they played a formation with more midfielders in the center. Chelsea had too many central options to be marked and that left a man isolated too much in midfield for Arsenal. All it took was, one midfielder, to pick the ball up in pockets, where someone is isolated and lay it off wide. Both their goals came from the wide areas of the pitch being free.

Liverpool should play 523 formation with a back 3 amd thiago and hendo in midfield and attack heavy on transition

He is still trying to figure out the nuances of Bruno's skills (going and moaning to the referee).

I feel like Arteta should know you don't force Chelsea wide. If anything their CMs are the weaker part of the team. Play wide, funnel them in where crosses can't hurt you, and pray you can hit on the counter.

Those diamonds on both flanks were possible because of Lukaku stretching the backline from Arsenal's midfield. Chelsea are one CB away from becoming the most dangerous n complete team in Europe.

4:00 - 4:00 you create the wrong shape. It's been 5-3-2 before, and 5-1-4 previous it. First of all it isn't keep 4-2-3-1 shape when defenseive state, even Arsenal rarely group that shape. Arsenal defensive shape sometimes form 5-1-4 with All forward keep pressing while the ball is still in Chelsea half and form 5-3-2 or 5-2-3 while the ball in Arsenal half. First 5-1-4 defensive shape. If Gooners really watch the game, they will know that several minutes before Lukaku goal Chelsea had possession from Goal kick. Then Arsenal 4 forward (Saka-Martinelli-ESR-Pepe) keep pressing high, and you see Xhaka drop deep into LCB leaving Sambi alone in the midfield. This is have pros and cons from me (and it's clear it's from the instructions). Pros = With 5-1-4, I'm pretty sure Arteta want the players keep pressing high to quickly steal the ball from Chelsea and put 5 players in defensive line it's just because the prevention if Chelsea did a counter attack (yeah with Lukaku, they will win 2nd ball easily due to his Aerial ability). Cons 5-4-1 : it will be hard burden for Sambi cause there's a lot of spot there, but Arteta confident with putting 5 players on defensive line with giving more tightness defensive lines. Mistake : But there's a miss communication from Xhaka and Tierney. When the ball deliver from Jorginho to Lukaku, Xhaka have mistake to pushing higher up to press at the same time maybe position himself to intercept the ball who will deliver to Mount. Also he have mistake for not tell the Tierney to keep himself out wide and be in the left half-space. In that goal too Tierney have a mistake too for tracking Mount instead of keep his position on the left flanks or left half-space. For second goal, it's a same mistake between both of them. Miss communication again and again to cover the left flanks.

Right now definitely. Klopp is on a decline, Guardiola is weird, Ancelotti is old, Zidane is losing himself, Mancini has its own thing, Ten Hag & Nagelsmann are too inexperienced, Mourinho is finished and Flick is all over the place. We have to see how Allegri will do now but yes, along with Conte & Simeone, the best. (btw it’s a blasphemy that Conte doesn’t have a job as of now while mugs like Arteta & Ole do have the job)

You can't blame a Pep wannabe like Artera. Even his master, Pep Guardiola tried it three times last season against Tuchel, and went back into hiding with tales firmly between legs with the pundits and media left covering for him with lame excuses.
