    Great video Lee. Its invaluable to get a demonstration like this from some one like yourself. You have just filled in another gap in my fishing education.

    Hello Lee. I do mine exactly the same on certain hook lengths but why don't you pass the line through the back of the eye 1st and obviously finish off at the back too, that way your knot and hair rig will naturally hang on the back of the shank? I whip back up 2 or sometimes 3 depending on the size of my hook so after having a few the hair stays on the back of the shank. 👍

    I thought that, I always start off thru the back and finish thru the back. Never seen it done any other way.

    When doing the loop, it's hard to see that after pinching the loop with the kink in it (for the length), that you're twisting the line BELOW that loop, around the rig tyer. The 'kinked' loop then hooks over the upper jaw of the loop tyer, before drawing things tight. Maybe this is obvious, but it took me a while to figure it out and a few people commented below, so I thought I'd try to clarify.

    Do you use the lasso system or bait bands for your pellet fishing ?

    I saw banded hair rigs in his box so I guess he uses bait bands.

    I bought one of these boxes to try this. I couldnt get a single length correct, let alone fill the box. Shame the camera doesnt show more detail about the loop end. Gave the box away in the end.

    Agreed, I have bought a Guru one since and I am doing nothing different but its working perfectly. For some completely unknown reason with the Preston box, especially on the 4" lengths they were never the right length afterwards. I cannot work out at all what the reason is but yeah the guru box may be is more accurate?

    Sorry, I have no idea what he did when he introduced the loop tier? I must be using my loop tier wrong... can anyone help? I al ways loop the line out between two fingers and then use the tier from there, how did he manage to do that without opening it all up?

  • @kevinsteele7232

    @kevinsteele7232

    He had a loop somewhere between his finger and thumb, that went over the rig tyer. Obviously thinks he explained it, but he didn't. So don't worry, you're not the only one.

  • @kevinsteele7232

    Okay. Figured it. He holds the loop that has the kink in it, then makes another loop to go around the rig tyer. After he twists that loop twice he then hooks the original (kinked) loop over the upper mouth of the tyer and pulls. Hope that helps.

    I really could not get the lengths right using the Preston box, I have bought a Guru one since and I am doing nothing different but its working perfectly. For some completely unknown reason with the Preston box, especially on the 4" lengths they were never the right length afterwards, not even close. I cannot work out at all what the reason is but yeah the Guru box may be is more accurate? Oh, and I still buy the pre-tied hooklengths and just reduce them down to 3 , 4 or 6 inch lengths. Had a session with Andy May a few weeks ago and even he buys them pre tied! 😂

  • @BushcraftMatt

    @BushcraftMatt

    Late reply but he is just tying a 'figure of eight' knot. When he says double over he means he is taking the end of the hooklength that he has bent around the end peg of the box, and he is forming the start loop of the figure of eight knot. He finishes the knot with the loop tyer tool which is not necessary but can make it easier at times. When the knot is finished the hooklength should be about a 1/16th of an inch (or 1 to 2mm) short of the peg, and when placed into the box it is under some tension which makes sure the hooklength remains straight.

    Poor video, just can't see what he's doing when he says 'Double in over'. I assume this is what keeps the correct length because I've done multiples of this now and they're all different lengths.
