I'd absolutely never consider an off-the-shelf security system like Ring, with no control over where your data's going. I'd much prefer something like this coming from a legitimate tech company, and having it all running locally.

I currently manage a 500+ camera system with six servers and 500+ TB of storage at my 9-5 and the separate network is the way to go. It keeps bandwidth usage down of your main network and isolates then from the internet. Great Video!!!

Great video! I liked the idea of having the cameras on their own separate network. People buying this setup also have to factor in the cost of camera licenses if they are setting up more than two cameras. Currently one addition license for a camera costs $56.12. Four additional licenses will cost an extra $199.99.

The right video at the right time! I just bought a house here in Estonia 🇪🇪and I got a Synology NAS last year (mostly because of their software). Mostly likely going to deploy this solution next year somehow, although the setup process looked a bit too advanced for a networking noob like me. Wish me luck.

Usually my comments never get replied/response, as a person who often gives advises to people for technical stuff, it's really hard to recommend this setup for regular user, it's EXTREMELY HARD. I used to think the synology camera software is the main reason why I should recommend the ecosystem for people who need it, but as you point it out in this video the camera is already doing the heavy lifting for most the process, so the software technically only records it to storage so what make it so different than regular NVR?, there are 2 main reason it's so hard to recommend synology ecosystem to regular people (in my experiences) 1. It's the price, 2. Licensing policy is a bit ridicilous, I'm not saying the alternatives is better, even qnap, asustor had same price range but the camera license. For home users, who rarely need more than 8 camera I end up suggest to buy NVR from the camera manufacturer instead, because since it's only recording why bother spending more money just to get license to use camera that you already own. For similar situation like this, I just suggest getting NVR from HIKVISION, it's not even comparable in cost, you can get 16channel nvr for $100 or less even if you are only using 2-8 camera, the overhead cost isn't really hurting your wallet. The differences here isn't just few bucks, but it's hundreds if not thousand dollars more. For office/enterprise users I end up recommending them to use blue iris instead. Let say average camera the office use is about 40, that is $2000 for the licenses alone. That differences could be used to get better camera or more storage, ask yourself, do you really want to spend $1000 for 4-8 camera setup when there's cheaper (and probably better) alternatives?

The problem with your comment is that you're making the assumption that everybody is going to have the same requirements. You're also ignoring the other functions that Synology (or other competitors) offer with their hardware. The licenses are also a one-time purchase and transferable. That's not to say that there aren't other solutions but some of your blanket statements are a bit ridiculous.

I went from using Synology SS with 9 ip cameras for 7+ years to Ring with 8 cameras all wireless via solar. I bought all of my Ring stuff on Amazon Prime Day. Ring has been a much better experience for me because it always works. I also bundle Rings security system with it for 10 bucks a month, both have been extremely good. With that said... Synology SS is very good, but requires a lot of maintenance. The problems mostly lie with the cameras. I CONSTANTLY dealt with cameras issues as they would constantly go down, require updates, ect. I owned several Hikvision, TrendNet, Foscam cameras over the years. Most cameras suppliers require to to set up there stuff through terrible web apps that usually don't work. My suggestion is if you choose to use Synology make sure you buy a single brand of camera and don't cheap out. I am keeping my Synology setup but only for backup because I have the equipment, but I am only using the FOSCAM cameras because they have mobile apps for ip and settings management. Ring is FAR more simple and also cost worthy if you purchase on sale. Did he mention the $50 price tag you have to pay for EACH camera licence on a Synology? I have $400 in licences alone! Sorry for the word vomit. This review just felt short sided coming from someone who used SS for 7 years and has deep experience using both setups.

Great video. This is exactly what I want to do for home surveillance, and I want to use the DS1621+ because I can upgrade to 10G via the PCIe expansion port, and use the Synology to record cam video, backup porn, er I mean VMs, linux distros, backup snapshots, and if i ever digitize my blu-ray collection from back in the day, it'll serve those. Maybe I'll even get fancy and backup security footage and other data to a 2nd (cheaper) Synology NAS. For lots of VMs, well, I have a Threadripper 32 core workstation for that. I think the setup will work well!

*The PRINCIPLES of choosing NVR & Cameras* - Identify the areas that are the most: 1. Likely path of a Person of Interest 2. Things that are likely to be stolen 3. That has "sensitive information or "access control" 4. The point that people have to pass through -- ideally, SLOWLY (fast motion = blurry) 5. Understand DORI -- Distance which the sensor's resolution is adequate to see: A. Detect. ... see something happening, but not WHAT, & cldn't ID the person in court. B. Observe. ... See what's happening, but can't recognize people you know even... C. Recognize. ... see detail to recognize (already known) -- not enough to ID strangers E. Identify ... see enough to ID strangers in court (legal standard). *Decide what features . you need to accomplish DORI 'missions' as required* *PICK THE CAMERAS FIRST BEFORE THE NVR* *IF you can, deal w sacrifices of higher cost or less performance to have 1 mfr -- it's worth it! *ONVIF is not a guarantee: NVRs will have "primary support" and "tenuous support for mfrs'* - Some will have H.265, some won't. Or won't handle the PTZ of a mfr well. Ask them which. Remember: Surveillance couldn't be more diff. from photography: Subjects move, distance & lighting suck, You're LUCKY if 10% of megapixel are on the subject. A person's face is roughly two-coke-cans wide ... and won't be NEARLY as still as that can was. You may get all of 3 seconds in which the person is on the only IP cam. for the area. If it's blurry in that "all of nothing moment" ...? The entire system was worthless. Cameras I used with the aforementioned NVRs: 8 MP Hikvision DS-2CD2085FWD-I 4 MP Dahua HDBW4431R-ZS 12 MP Bosch [Fisheye] 70122 F 12 MP Uniview [PTZ] IPC6258SR-X22P 4K UHD PTZ IR 12 MP Samsung [Bullet] SNB-9000 12 MP Samsung [Dome] PNO-9080 5 MP Samsung [Indoor Fisheye] SNF-8010M 5 MP Samsung [Outdoor Fisheye] SNF-8010VM Wendel's choice (Hikvision) = good "prosumer" bang per $. Dahua's H.265 is more mature. Text on coke can: Look what % of the entire image the can is. The ENTIRE image = 8MP The can's "area on the sensor" through a lens with a 90˚ 𝜽 is ... 1/100th ...? A face is about 2x the width of a coke-can. It won't be still. May not have good lighting. If you want to see the truth of whether you system will work for you, buy ONE CAMERA of the price you can afford ... and try to go through that area with various lighting and see if it'll have enough data to get you convicted. "Legal" isn't your goal..? Identifying people you know of is? (Determining who's responsible to clean the dishes..?) Great; test that. SEE if it's going to make a difference relative to your real budget. Wendel's cameras: DS-2CD2085FWD-I ... NVR's I've tried that sucked or were "okay": QNAP • Dahua NVR5432 • Synology DS1817+ • *MilestoneSys.com* (latter being pref.) Dahua UI sucked & it'd reboot at random times..? QNAP / Synology: Too long ago so didn't have H.265 -- and didn't have adequate camera support. But what hasn't changed..? Surveillance is an afterthought for these companies; use a SPECIALIST (Milestone or similar) I strongly recommend you check out MilestoneSys.com. The GPU acceleration is EPIC cool! Hope this was useful to someone. (If you buy things based on cool features per camera ... or shop for MP alone..? You won't have adequate space on your drives to realize you were robbed and then to find the perp before it's deleted. Or -- the frame rate will be too low to get a good image. Or, you'll have their face -- as a blurry blob that does you no legal utility. Be PRACTICAL. Ideally, get people's face at some point they have to walk slowly through. Or be in for a bit... discretely. (Like using a hidden peep hole camera on an elevator). Make SURE there is adequate lighting, or you'll just have a blurry streak (long exposure means no crisp images). Fast shutter with inadequate light means either dark images or VERY VERY Grainy. Remember, the sensor in these cameras ...? Are usually 2-3 generations old Sony sensors that are 1/2.5" ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor_format Look at the 1/2.5" vs. a DX or FX lens ... and then remember: It's GOING to be about a 90˚ Good luck! JOIN IPVM to get good info -- and tell them Truman sent you ... you may get a discount.

sure the Synology Surveillance station is good but a 4 cam License pack Price: ~$250 on top of the $1000's you just spent on there NAS system. that is a bit rich your better off getting cams that do all the detection on the cam (as you said there full blown computers now) and they just send the resulting data for storage on the NAS PS:= i use this setup

you can also use an open-source station like motioneye or zoneminder. (i found motioneye to be very laggy but zm does works perfectly for me) - he's right that ip cams are all standardized so when buying a camera you just need to check what standards it uses and check on your software of choice to make sure it supports those.

@@AdversityZone a pi or rock64 with a camera is a 50 bucks ip camera running it's own open source os on it's own hardware that can be security hardened as much as you feel you need. So 50 bucks per camera. Add a switch, some wiring and another pi or other cheap computer to function as a nas with a couple of drives connected and you have a system capable of any functionallity you want and able to run pretty much any analisys or software you need, have everything encrypted all the way and you can customise it however you want. Add a mic and/or speaker, lighting control, automatic notifications, automated gate system with face recognition for security, have it control switches or other equipment at certain events. Like have it close shutters or turn on lights and the tv when some unknown person aproaches the property to make it look like you are home etc. Put in a couple of steppers and you have a remote controlled camera that can move and follow objects or people. Possibilities are endless with open systems like raspberry pi's or other single board computers that just run linux.. On the other hand. These are plug and play and much easier and faster to set up and have a community support system you can use if you run into problems. All depends on budget, requirements, knowledge of the operator and the function the system needs to perform what is the best solution.

Hey for those that want to try. at 14:10 , if you have a single NIC synology NAS what I would recommend is you get a managed switch (netgear, dlink, cisco smb, etc). Connect a port to your NAS. Set up synoology with the port in 802.1Q mode. A trunk. This way it can pass multiple Vlans (multiple IP networks). Set one vlan as your "IP Camera backbone" vlan with a tag of 20. Set another vlan as "Management" with a tag of 30. The management vlan will have a default gateway pointing to your firewall (pfsense or whatever) or your Unifi edge router or whatever you will use to pass/route. Problem solved.

In your setup environment, how do you connect. a wireless IP camera to the synology? I would assume that somehow you would need to connect the wireless camera to a router that is also connect to the POE switch that is on the same network as the synology. If so, how do you configure the router's and access point (if needed)'s IP address setting? would this router be able to get on the internet then? If I need to let this router to get on the internet so that some of the wireless device that is connect to the router are able to access via internet, how should I implement this setup and configure the router?

Been looking to this for quite some time. But getting cameras (on a budget) that work outdoor in a place with climate, is a pain in the butt. Most cameras that are "affordable" want "operate" below +5C, with a few up to -5C. That's a problem where winter normally drops to -20 - -30C. Already got a Synolgy running as a Media server, backup and "dump".

My case is that I am using Synology Surveillace for cameras at home and I own coffe shop where I want to add some cameras but don't want to buy separate Synology NAS just for those 3 cameras. Can I add remote location cameras to Synology at my house? Using VPN maybe? Thanks for the answer!

Quick question for the channel or anyone willing to share their knowledge / experience: When I set up my 4-bay Synology DS418 about a year ago, I had not thought of using it for a surveillance system. I put in four WDEFAX80 8TB Red NAS drives. I use it primarily as a video server and for general file sharing between multiple laptops and a desktop here at home. I usually have 16-17TB free even with one HDD taken out of play for redundancy. I know the Reds will work, but normally one would go for the Purple drives for surveillance purposes. Do I have anything to be concerned about?

How on earth can you do a in depth video on synology surveillance and not mention that you most likely will have to buy a license for extra cameras? Depending on the synology you buy it might come with 2 licenses, but if you need more a license is something like $50 per camera view. It is nice that the license is supposed to be transferable if you switch to a different NAS or upgrade your camera.

Ah. Just got my nvr1218 setup using reolinks instead. Works pretty well though it's not h265. Way better than what ADT gave me. I'd go with the nvr series for a dedicated setup since you get 4 licenses instead of the standard 2. It's also faster to set up. Also iirc Synology has new ones coming out with some AI driven facial recognition.

The complaint I have is that the motion detection is pretty basic. I get recorded clips of lights on a car passing, leaves moving, cats running across the field, etc.

Look up some pfsense tutorial videos, there are loads that explain what functions do and how to use them. Even if you do not run a pfsense router specificly the concepts and functionallity is the same across all routers and firewalls. Some just have more functions and control options then others. I learned a lot from doing exactly this while running my own pfsense box. Just set up a pfsense box plug it in and see what happens. If you fuck up plug in your old router again and everything is back to how it was before. Try again next weekend after reading up on what you did wrong.
