God bless you, Wendell With that video you just saved me from A TON of work an an massive headache, since we got a thousand-ish of Hik cameras deployed in different locations and firmware bricking is not that uncommon
One more time for extra credit love all you guys working there so hard to give us this amazing content
Very interesting. Very useful. Clear and concise. Thank you
This is not a tutorial......... its more a lecture if anything...
I would love to see some guide regarding how to isolate these camera in your local network so they would not phone home.

Put them in a VLAN. Restrict the VLAN to connect to specific IP addresses only. Use a local way to access them only. I don't use Hikvision but have other chinese cameras as feeds for Synology surveillance station. My pfsense logs show them trying to phone home all the time.

@@origamihawk It needs to be more tutorial, direct, and practical for a consumer. Like, how to setup with WRT and hundred dollar scale hardware IMO. I'd love to get my phone on a filtered network and stop using a white list for everything else, but I don't want to make a career out of it. My rule number 1 with new devices is to take them apart and cut power to, or remove all unnecessary mics and cameras. I never asked for either on a tablet, laptop, or for a camera facing my ugly mug on a phone. Those are all in violation of my permissions for property I purchase. I despise the fact these are exploited as a "service." It's as honest as calling a pick pocket a weight loss consultant.
I had to recover one of these and I used a locally hosted PumpKIN instance as my TFTP server. A little wonky but it did work. Definitely going to try that Python based server to see if it makes my job easier for the next time a coworker accidentally grabs the wrong firmware.
Do we have to thank He Sung for that software experience?
Great video. Very helpful. Thanks!
Wendell, Hi, thanks very helpful video. With your comment about keeping the HIKVision off the internet, how do I use its email notification capability?
Great video! It's very helpful for people out there who have Hikvision cameras. Especially those who have either inherited them, or had them installed and not shown how to configure or set them up properly. Unfortunately Hikvision themself want nothing to do with the consumer, which is sad. So it leaves a lot of people with a bad experience. A few questions and notes on your video. I havn't come across any gigabit HK cameras yet.....all of the ones I've installed are 100mb. Even my 4k cameras are 100mb....although, I can't say I've seen ALL HK cameras, but 100mb is still plenty for streaming and recording 4k. I have to ask, what's the point of an 8 port 2.5gb switch if the cameras, and other POE devices are (lets say even 1gb)? Wouldn't it be better to buy a 24 / 12 port Gigabit POE switch and then use LACP for throughput? Which leads me to the Synology. The software from Synology is expensive, and the ONVIF protocol limits usages of the HK cameras. If you are recommending using the Synology for storage, having to create a separate volumes for each camera is a pain in the arse, and I've found viewing and downloading footage is very problematic at best. They also just stop recording for no reason, this has happened many times across many installation I've seen set up this way. I think a better solution for using the Synology (which all don't come with 2 eth ports) would be to bond the 2 ports and create an iSCSI drive, attach it in your recording device. For instance a dedicated PC, or virtual pc with iVMS storage server. Totally agree with your statement on HK software...it's really is BAD!! I've determined after years working with HK cameras that iVMS 2.8.2 (last version prior to Version 3) to be the most stable in a Windows environment. Certainly get a lot less 'The Client is already running' notifications that make me want to hang myself from the rafters! Your observations on WIFI as option is totally correct as well. It's incredibly hard to convince people that CCTV over WIFI is terrible idea! Then they go ahead with it anyway only to find constant dropouts that won't reconnect, and their Netflix won't stream properly any longer. I did have fairly good success streaming a HK camera via a Ubiquiti M5 loco setup. Albeit 1080p was as high a resolution I could get maintaining quality with out the dropouts. Also WiFi just throws that extra, already unreliable technology into the mix creating a potential headache down the road. I also feel that 20 fps is overkill on a CCTV system.....10 is more than sufficient for most business' and home environments. It minimises (as you say) processing, but also uses less storage. I run mine at 8fs....it's perfectly fine. I don't sit down with a bag of popcorn when I review footage so motion smoothness is not a priority. Thanks again for you video. Another great TFTP alternative is TFTP64...... I primarily use it for Cisco, but it's works with HK as well. Cheers
Great video !
it's work, ! Gracias y saludos desde Argentina!
I was wondering what people think of zonemimder especially on truenas. Ive had a synolgy which are decent but any more than 2 cameras and you need a licence. Also had hikvision which I found quite difficult to use and expensive. Im on reolink now and i think there good for the price. Gonna build a truenas and use zfs and zoneminder. Cheers Wendell.
Thanks for HikVision problem overview, I have an bricked DS-2DE4225IW-DE which doesn't respond to the tftp method but does have an rs232 operation interface which is only a firmware load option prompting to enter 5x '5', then 5x '6' followed by option to upload image file however it doesn't seem to except the *.dav file, is there any way / method to revive it or is it bricked beyond repair ?? thanks for feedback
I have just installed two Unifi UVC-G3-Flex cameras, and this involved wiring ethernet cables up for the first time. One of the two cameras works fine, but the other is waiting to be paired - but the CloudKey can't find it. They both worked fine inside, in the test deployment, so i suspect that wiring is to blame. I don't understand Ethernet wiring enough, but I'm guessing that i have crimped one end incorrectly. So that's tomorrow's job ...
Thank you for the video Wendell!! Been wanting to set something like this up at home for a while and this just served to make the rabbit hole deeper lol! Quick Question (slightly off topic, sorry) Looking for a good controller software (plan to build a NAS) have you heard of any that will save both continuous recordings and then take clips of motion/activity? Like if i wanted a solid 8 days of 24/7 recording but then keep /archive only the segments with motion on them for another 30-60? (automatically w/o having to manually clip the videos after the fact) Keep up all the amazing content! Happy Holidays!
Hi, I got two camera's but they got china firmware is there a good site to find those ?
What if the camera does not have a wired ethernet connector? Like the hand-held thermal? Has wifi only. Also can TFTP downgrade firmwares or flash older versions?
I understood 0% of this video. Hell, I hardly understand any videos that aren't the news. However, I will watch a level1techs video without complaining at all..
Reolink wireless camera's are pretty good. They don't make a connection until someone is accessing them. They also can record offline using an SD card.
How do you fix an IR cut filter thats stuck on a hikvision?
Is there OSS firmware for HIK yet?
Hi Wendell you rock
My grandma couldn't get her ring style doorbell (idk brand name) to work with her wifi so she sent it to us, and I think it may be an interesting idea to have a jerry rig video to patch up or recode it for security; if it's not something where you'd be lible for spreading that information of reprogramming hardware.
A tower heatsink at 9:45 and pi 2 performance? Can we OC a camera and run Doom on an ARM distro?
Reminds me of the good old days when you could flash whatever you like to your bios and brick it .
wow. great. Thanks.
Has anyone ever tried mounting some kind of small handgun to one of those pan and tilt cams?

You've been playing too much Metal Gear!
Sounded like you signed out three or four times at the end there. Do you record your videos in VIM?
Woooooo! Hick vision baby!
plees can you help me my camera no data all light on
python file wont work anymore, any solutions? Hikvision server wont send new firmware because of more than 30MB.
Oh man i already spent like 2 days trying to recover a hiwatch nvr i bought like a week ago. i hope this works. i managed to brick it with a bad firmware update.
This is fantastic, exactly what I needed, thank you! Problem is, I have absolutely no idea how to use these Python scripts and there are no step-by-step instructions for people like me who have all the gear, but no idea. Would anyone happen to point me in the direction of any instructions for un-bricking my Hikvision IP camera using this Python script. Thank you :-D
Hi there. I picked up a bunch of Advidia A-54’s on ebay. I think they could be bricked. They show up on the network as 192.0.0.64 but I can’t access their page. Would your guide be applicable to this situation?
@Level1Techs

Possibly yeah try getting their firmware tho or use some tools to debug what it's looking for on tftp
This is the good shit I am here for.
At 17:48 I think you meant 3840x2160, not 320x240 (That would not require a beefy system!)
Is the firmware bad or did they make it bad for the US then? Nice one Wendell, dedication right there!
I bricked my Hikvision Intercom (DS-KV6113) by installing new firmware not authorized for my area. It constantly reboots and only appears on the network for couple of seconds. Wil this method work?

I work on the 3xlogic system and it's about the same.
TFTP over TCPiP?
How long before Ben Eater and Big Clive team up to make a replacement bootloader/firmware chip so these can run open source? (Probably not on that 3¢ microcontroller but that's okay. ;) )
For me. I'll stick to crappy Wyze cams with Dafang hacks. I sandbox those too, but I really don't like the idea of having crap on my LAN that I know would squawk home if it could.
Having a problem understanding what Wendell saying? Use 0.75 play back speed ! (slow down Wendell) Highly recommend to be able to follow what he is saying. (friendly sarcasm)
In this case, forever means ....forever!
NETHERLANDS!! NETHERLANDS!! NETHERLANDS!! oh hello from the Netherlands btw.
Thx now I'm shopping on eBay lol. Dang you Wendell
Howdy Wendel sorry this will be a bit Long but for a Big Reason........ODD question first and then ill explain why im asking. The Place in Kentucky You were working with to help Fix the issue with the Hikvision distributor....... By Chance .....is that the same place that Distributes the Reolink & other Poe Brand name Ip Cameras? I wonder BC I am having almost the same issues and More over the past Few Months on a Few of My RLC-410 & RLC-520 4/5 MP Reolink cameras with SD cards in them. Me and Reolink have been working kind of on Twitter Dm's to see if we can Pin Point the issue and they have been great in replacing then so for that I praise them Greatly........ BUT what Caught MY EYE was the Software Versions of Hikvision.......some of them are the Same as Reolink........and I wonder if this is the Problem with the 5 + Cameras I have had Recording issues with. 1 thing I noticed too was I have some UE versions that were replacements so i need to double check the Version of software compatibility part now..........uggg...but thx!! Another 1 of the Biggest I notice is with the Desktop Client...v7.2.28 .......when I down load the newest Version v7.2.33 it opens and Crashes immediately.........but is i revert back to the V7.2.28 the cameras are Fine .....BUT then you cant add New Cameras to your System even if you use the UID # .....they system gets all Flaky. I have a 4 Reolinks 5 mp PTZ 423 's like the 1 you showed a few weeks ago, along with 12 of the newest RLC-510A & RLC 520A 5 mp Cameras & 4 ea. of the New D 800 & B800 ADD ON 4K Reolinks Cameras to go with their Newest RLN-16 port 4k POE NVR . Iam wondering if I should just Skip the 4k Add on Cams BC they would be closed network 'ish' ....with their NVR or just Jump to the New RLC-810A's & RLC-820A's . OR just wait for the Newer ....RLC-1220-A RLC-1210-A 7 other 12 MP IP cameras.... to come out and just BY pass the Refresh 8mp Ip Cameras.........it not about the Money its about the reliability........im Tired of Getting on a Lift to replace or Fix yet another IP Camera that has 1 Software issue or Another or Brick a recording on an SD card. That is why i am Bugging you to see if you can shed some light.....BC as I said the Versions of Software have the same # so i really wonder if they are the Same but with a Diff Branding..and if so then I could resolve my issues. Wendel I am Sorry for such a Long Question /comment but 95% of what you RAN into I have but with a small twist but on the Reolink Brand ......so thats why I ask is they are from the Same Place .......they are In Walton Kentucky now. Cow}:-o)
where exactly do i download the file or script on the link? all u did was rambling about security for more than half of the video and none sense the rest. the only half helpful is the link which doesn't even provide any file to dl. but i found somewhere eles.
Heh, if we're going to have distopian technology then I'm going to control it!
Plz do a video about making your own security cameras with rpi camera and maybe a banana pi
ALSO ANOTHER IDEA, maybe a video detailing a repeatable process to flash out (idk proper term, I mean taking out current OS and then doing this;) and replace windows (xp, or any newer for example) or any other OS to a kid-friendly Linux with what would essentially be entirely closed off flood gates for a true parental control system that doesn't rely on search terms and other loopholes not being utilized. I think some sort of parent chat system would be optimal though maybe not possible idk I'm not the expert here just my idea, and something I've been considering to make use of old laptops for my niece.

Well, at least you don't have to desolder SPI eeprom unlike tp-link router that I bricked some time ago ;(
Yep. installed the wrong FW by having the wrong IP address in the browser. Doh. Why don't they have a firmware check on them ?!?

What is there another black swan event lol.
I thought they were Fast Ethernet 100Mbps
All these OEM/ODMS using HV and none of them are willing to group together and fund Opensource/openfirmware that in itself should say a lot about companies/corporations/industry
Their whole lineup sounds like a headache to attempt to keep up-to-date, OMG! With those issues, I'm never getting a Hick Vision camera

I think a Hick version is an old soda can and an iPhone 4s with extras GBS 🤣🤣🤣
Hik cameras are fine for a 4-8 cam domestic installation, but an unmitigated disaster for a larger commercial deployment; hopeless convuluted firmware, shitty PTZ tracking, their cameras and intercom kit is basically obsolete/unsupported within a few years , no proper vendor support. Stick to avigilon, axis, AD or any decent legacy security kit for your NVR and PTZ' and use hik for fixed cameras if you want to save a few quid-basically disposable cameras, most resellers bin them when they're RMA'ed at this stage. The security issues are a non issue with a proper NVR with multiple nics, most decent machines have 2-4 anyway.
@Invictum594
3 жыл бұрын
I’ve been looking everywhere for tips on this and you seem like you may know. Is it possible to connect a really good PTZ camera to something like a Jetson Nano, or wire it to home server to run with face detection software like OpenCV with the goal of every time the camera sees a face or a license plate in its FOV, zoom in on the face or plate, then check it against a database of faces and log the results, perhaps flagging the admin if there was an unknown person who was detected on the premise multiple times? Is there a type of feature or naming convention for PTZ cameras that have the ability to be programmatically moved around? I don’t even know where to start when looking, haha
This is how I've been getting all my cheap cameras. I have a few BNC cards that support 4 cameras. I have a PC. I tried Linux and every week was a kernel stack error. I rebuilt it 3 times and gave up. Can't fix a kernel stack error that I could find. Takes 4 days to rebuild it all each time. What Windows apps do you use? What do you use for PTZ controller? Stay the hell away from Zomodo cameras. They are a very expensive scam.
Its too bad you can't just use the SADP tool
What I learned from this video is don't buy Hikvision cameras, not worth the hassle.

No shit! I mean, if you're on a Wendell-level of knowledge, maybe this is a viable option, but the steps here seem convoluted at best. Besides, all of those cheap dead cameras on Ebay will probably already be gone lol!
What Wendell's really saying is "don't buy a HiKVision."
Who on earth told you it's pronounced Hi-Kay Vision? I speak to them regularly, and it's Hike Vision (although most native English speaking staff pronounce it Hick Vision even though they know it's wrong)
All it would take is EU or West to use goverment FORCE to demand all chinese products have open source firmware no backdoors or refuse to sell it Whats more important closed source firmware and backdoors or millions of dollars in sales
Its OKAY for ISRAEL to work with Microsft and intel to backdoor Intel cpus with IME but its not 'OKAY" for CHINA and CHINESE firms to do it with tech DOUBLE STANDARDS
This seams like the most anti consumer bullshit ever
I wil never buy this garbage again, switch to Ubiquitti.
just use TFTP64/32 for Windows man haha what the hell? I hate windows too but don’t need to reinvent the wheel with github python scripts and shit... not like TFTP was invented yesterday also really doubt those claims about the intel NIC being so flakey to not support TFTP. Super hard to believe. That would be a major fuck up
