Synology Surveillance Station 9.0 - Everything New that is Coming nascompares.com/2021/12/03/su...
Many users who purchase a Synology NAS hardware solution, do so because of the wide variety of software services that are included with it. Although Diskstation Manager has a large number of key applications that range from file management, communication and backups, to multimedia, server synchronization and virtual machine deployment - one application that still continues to be used by home and business users alike is Surveillance Station. The genuinely enterprise-grade quality network video recording and security tool that arrives with very Synology NAS have been one of the most updated applications in the brand's history. Evolving far beyond a simply camera recording tool and into a complete site surveillance and security platform that is used by top tier companies worldwide to protect their assets. During the Synology 2022 and Beyond event, a large portion of coverage was given to the latest update to their Surveillance arm of the brand, with a new hardware solution (the DVA1622) and a large number of updates coming in the jump towards Surveillance Station version 9.0. So today I wanted to summarize all of those changes and updates, to help you see where the Synology surveillance platform will be headed in 2022.

Their software is awesome, I wish they sold the software / OS separately and buy camera licenses on that.

Dual recording doesn't need a subscription to the C2 service (with all its limitations) - you can mount a remote share via CIFS (e.g. to a second NAS) and dual record to there. Now I'm off to look at edge recording.

Great summary of the main new features! Do you know if this version of SS finally resolves their issue where to date it has been unable to deal with IP cameras that utilise dual streams over different protocols? For example, the Reolink RLC-810A, which is a great camera in itself and works beautifully with the Reolink app, simply cannot be supported working correctly in SS (ie. one low-res constant stream and even driven high-res recordings). Today, this means I just cannot use SS for all my cameras, which is a real shame ..

I am considering playing with Surveillance Station again, but last time I did it messed with the camera settings (bit rate, resolution, iFrame rate etc) and as such messed with my current system. How do you add a camera to SS without SS trying to take over and modify the camera settings?

That is to limit recording size, it always tries to take over to get a smaller size on the disk. I wish they could record more than 1080p, as most IP cameras do 4K video and the resolution is astounding. One solution is to use the second stream IP capability for Synology recording, and retain the higher definition for live video.

@@jmcbike I understand recording limits. The issue for me - I have Blue Iris as well as Surveillance Station. When a camera is added to Surveillance Station, it overwrites the all the compression, resolution and frame rates I already have setup correctly in the camera. That is very annoying. Surveillance Station writes to the actual camera settings on the camera with what it feels the settings should be. It is to do with the Surveillance Station interacts with cameras, not to do with storage space as it is not to do with limiting the recording space, it is done when a camera is setup. Storage space used by the camera is a separate setting. I have 40TB of storage in my NAS. SS does not care about that when it goes and uploads settings to the camera. In fact, the settings it uploads to the camera causes the recordings to take up more space than the settings I normally use.

@@EsotericArctos I agree it is annoying. They should let the camera do the setting. Plus now you don't get much choice- either low quality, balanced or high quality. Most cameras offer more resolutions than that.

Cms in Surveillance Station 9 is bad. Camera recordings only show from Local Host and not from all servers at once, also you cant choose default recording server for showing recordings, you need to choose server manually to view which takes more steps which is really a big problem

Version 9 is an absolute mess with H.265(+) camera's though. You now need the Advanced Media Extensions (seperate app) to use them, but Surveillance Station constantly loses awareness of this app. Coupled with CMS, this makes for a horrible experience.

Excited, I get tired of licence complaints, pay the money for the software! My first POE cameras cost $750 each in 2009, now people can get much better cameras for a fraction of the price, that extra $50 is still far cheaper than cameras from 10 years ago.

I am completely done with Synology. They get the flying fickle finger of fate award for the worst support operation in technology. What's worse, once your warranty is done, they don't want to hear from you. The hardware is designed to break after the warranty, leaving you with no option but to shell out for more crap to get your data back. I don't like their tactics. I don't like their disdain for their customers. I don't like their expensive hardware. And DSM isn't worth the hassle. Save your money and buy from a company that doesn't hate their own customers!
