Why must camera be on local network? Can I add cameras from multiple sites? what if they are behind different vpn's?

IF I have 16 cameras, do I need to have 16 licenses? How much do licenses cost? Do I buy the incremental licenses from Synology?

H265 cameras must use the desktop client, as the web browser can't view the footage. I only use the Desktop Client now with my 8MP cameras. I have a 12TB volume in my Synology for Surveillance Station recording and it's used 10.5TB for 24/7-30 days of recording footage. I don't trust motion detection recording. I'd rather have the entire day, and the ability to track a suspicion vehicle or persons activities throughout the day without dropped recording between the motion events it's decided are important. 12TB isn't a small amount, but I don't want to have issues with a prosecutor or jury accepting my security footage because it has blank spots on the timeline for reasonable doubt.

Hi. Very interesting and useful tutorial. I have 2 external cameras on my home and until a few weeks ago i was utilising the camera software for detections and alerts which was working well. My detections were under IVS for an entry and exit zone. However, I have recently changed my ISP and for some reason I now cannot get email alerts via the camera software so have resorted to using surveillance station (DSM 7) through which alerts do work. But I have found the experience to be completely frustrating. IVS does not work with surveillance station and the function is greyed-out, so I have to resort to using a detection area and setting the sensitivity and threshold controls. But I have found this to be pretty much useless and it will trigger an alert every time the sun goes behind a cloud but won't detect someone walking down my driveway. I really would like this to work and I record 24/7 to my Synology DS118 which is used solely for this purpose, but the whole experience is one of utter frustration as it seems unable to deliver what I need it to, and to what I was getting previously. Do you have any suggestions?

Surveillance Station can't find cameras on my network, they used to work fine for over 2 years. Now can't find the cameras even though the cameras are on the network, please help?

If the cameras are ONVIF cameras, then your issue is likely a mDNS issue on your network. Unfortunately not uncommon. You can manually add the cameras that are not detected by their IP Address, so just find that out and manually add them. As long as they are on the same subnet as the NAS, you should be able to manually add them

I added a Foscam camera to my DS415+ back in December 2014, and everything worked just fine. Then after a few app updates my camera stopped working, e.g. it was recognised but would not caputre moving footage anymore. No idea why that is.

I find the Synology S.S. pretty flaky. After reading some posts to the forums, it sounds like updates over the last year or so are the problem. Be sure to install the Action Rules app in S.S. and get to know how it works; that may provide some insight. I found the Actions Rules app a bit late in the game. It would appear that when you set up your cams, that an action rule is created for each one. Then when you make some changes, the AR may not make the required change. It's still a bit of a mystery to me. Like so many of these products, people at Synology know them inside out so don't think to explain things very well in their manuals.

Not trying to be a jerk, but a 2014, 8 year old camera isn't the best technology for serious security. You can easily get a new replacement that has better resolution and is compatible for $50.

@@RJ_Cormac I appreciate that and I agree. It's around 1080p and has 3x optical zoom and motorised panning etc. Maybe I could use it as a cheap webcam, otherwise selling it would be pointless as it cost me £130 but lucky to get £10 now I bet.

I"m going to reply to my own reply... I have spent more time with the Action Rules and, from what I can figure out, S.S. will record video without the use of Action Rules. However, if you want Snapshot, you will require an Action Rule. I think RJ Cormac below is right. A new Reolink cam is pretty cheap these days and offer pretty good quality. I have 2 and they are fine. Don't use the camera's firmware settings; just set up the parameters in SS.

It is great, if you only want 2 cameras. Outside of that, you'd be many hundreds of times better off financially to use a program like Blue Iris at under $100 for a 64 camera license running on a computer that will cost you under $400. All the things shown in this video are available on virtually all platforms and honestly there are cheaper, and easier to use, options for the general user by the time you add the cost of the NAS (ridiculously expensive for what you get) and license fees as even the most basic system will end up with more than 2 cameras. The other thing to remember with Synology is you don't get human, vehicle or any other smart detection unless you buy cameras that have those features where as several other solutions, that are cheaper, do actually have these features built into the software. I really would not recommend Surveillance Station for the average home user.

For 64 cameras you are better off buying a dedicated NVR like any other sensible business. For hobbyist that like tinkering then sure you can mess around with BI.
