    I use this for years and as I liked it for have records of what's going on outside. I never liked the notifications of events and just felt like it was okay enough to get by. I don't have the money yet to get a computer for doing just this but I seen a lot of blue iris videos and it seems way more amazing

    Also if you're running a lot of dockers, then your nas is already quite loaded. Could be best for the camera stuff to be hosted separately.

    Don't forget to mention: If you buy a license, even it is just a code, you won't get the code via e-mail but instead you have to wait for it to be shipped to you (:

    I've tried to use both the Synology and the QNAP surveillance apps but for my relatively simple needs, they were far too complicated and cluttered with stuff that created more issues than solutions. I have 4 Reolink cameras which I manage and monitor with the Reolink Windows desktop app and it all works brilliantly.

    I love Synology Surveillance Station very much. I only hate that whenever a camera starts recording due to movement, it freezes the camera on DS cam i have running on a tablet in the living room and attic. This happens on all camera's on different phones and tablets.

    Excellent information. I'm currently researching synology surveillance station and POE cameras. This video was helpful, very good point on how to try to maximize the 2 free license by using dual lens cameras. Are you able to provide any information on how I can use an external drive (plugged into my DS220+ via usb port) to set up surveillance station to run on there. I've read that using main volume and drives for this would cause the performance to obviously degrade for other file transfer tasks or plex server etc.

    Glad it helped! You unfortunately can't use an external drive as a volume, but if you want to set up a second storage pool and volume and only use it for Surveillance Station, you can do that.

    Great video Frank, we’ll detailed and delivered. Curious if you’re running Code Project AI? And also, the new cams just released from Synology do not require the purchase of additional licenses. Granted they are more expensive then the typical $90 Amcrest camera.

    Thanks for watching, Tony! I need to check those Synology cameras out! Yes, I use Code Project AI and it's absolutely amazing. I was running Deepstack but switched a few months ago and it's running great. Paired with Home Assistant, it really provides exceptional notifications and Blue Iris is just a powerhouse in terms of customization. I've been very happy with it!

    Thanks for building a video on this. I've been using SSS for over 10 years and started with 6 licenses that were really cheap back then compared to their cost today. I just purchased a 4 license pack to add 3 more cameras to my system. I have upgraded from a 1511+ to 1621+ recently and still to this day love the ds cam function for my wife and I on our phone while we're away. Can you please comment on the use of DS Cam and its security with the VLAN setup you discussed? Thanks.

  • @WunderTechTutorials

    @WunderTechTutorials

    The security concern is really on the camera side. Generally, these cameras are installed, configured, and not touched for years - firmware isn't ever upgraded, etc. For this reason, they can slowly become a security vulnerability (if they aren't already) and some people simply don't want cameras reporting to the internet ever. Setting up a VLAN with firewall rules allows you to separate the traffic so that SSS can communicate with the cameras, but the cameras can't communicate with anything else (internet, local LAN, SSS, etc). I've had my camera system with Blue Iris set up this way since the start and it runs very well. The cameras don't touch the internet, and everything else is managed through Blue Iris.

    Nice broad overview. I’m surprised with your concern for security you are okay with that source creator of that camera. I would go with an NDAA compliant camera only, just saying.

  • @WunderTechTutorials

    @WunderTechTutorials

    That's a good point and I probably should have mentioned that. I think at my core, I feel that security cameras should be split out with no access to the internet, but if that's not an option, you're right - an NDAA-compliant camera is best. As for the camera selection, it's really a license thing. With a separate NVR, they're "nice to have", but with SSS, they can end up saving a decent chunk of money if you have good locations for them.

  • @hicobra

    @hicobra

    10 ай бұрын

    @@David-bl1bt But it cost about £160 for a 4 pack camera license you can get a single camera license for about £50 and remember that older Synology NAS come with 1 camera license and the newer ones come with 2 licenses. I have one old and one new Synology's so have 3 camera licenses even if you link your smartphone camera or a GoPro it will use a license. If your doing a muti camera like 6-12 camera's your better of putting 1 or 2 of the Synology camera's in there with some cheaper ones and instead of getting a 8 bay Synology NAS you are better off getting 2x4 bays for more camera licenses.

    I don’t think this was a very good video on Synology Surveillance Station. Most of the time you compared it to another product and stated it’s 100 time better. Clearly a made up metric. I really like your channel and have learned a great deal. This one just seemed one off. The point of the one time perpetual and transferable license is to ensure the product is as secure as possible. I know security is always the end user’s responsibility … but the licensed funds go a long way to keep one’s ecosystem secure.

    I appreciate the input and will keep phrases like that in mind moving forward because I didn't mean it literally - I simply meant that it's significantly better in those categories (in my opinion). I'll try and summarize my points better in this comment. The issue with Synology Surveillance Station is that it's an extremely expensive NVR. As I mentioned in the video, if you don't own a Synology NAS, you're paying for the NAS, hard drives, cameras, and licenses to run an NVR that isn't a particularly great NVR in comparison to other options. Even if you remove the cameras and hard drives from the equation (as they're needed for all NVRs), it's more expensive than comparable NVRs and flat-out worse than certain options like BI (which will probably be cheaper if you own 8+ cameras, even if you have to purchase hardware). I love Synology products, but I don't personally see the draw of SSS. I also don't see the licenses as anything other than a downside, and security is not an excuse or even a legitimate reason for camera license costs to be honest (maintaining the security of your product is a bare-minimum requirement and if licenses are needed to keep SSS secure, what is funding the ongoing security of the NAS, QuickConnect, etc). I respect that you can look at it in a positive way, but the truth is that the licenses kill the value of SSS and most people can't and/or shouldn't justify the cost to even try it on a larger scale (I would personally have to spend $700 total for just licenses). I think the main issue is that I used Blue Iris first and it's hard to think SSS is good after doing so. The basic features that BI offers, in my opinion, are better, and it's a lot more powerful/feature-filled than SSS. Then when you throw in the fancy features like AI detection and everything that comes along with it, then compare that to the point that if you wanted to do it similarly in SSS, you'd have to purchase a DVA model (which is literally $2,500 for a 4-bay), I can't really see any scenario where SSS is worth it on a large scale. I admit that this is my opinion and a lot of people will find BI either too complicated or unnecessary and I completely get it. I just don't really see the draw of SSS and have an extremely hard time recommending it to anyone who doesn't own a Synology already, and even then, I think there are better options. As I said in the video though, if you do own one, you should 100% try it with the two free licenses to see if you like it. I just think that it's one of Synology's weaker offerings, especially when compared to the competition.
