    I agree that HyperBackup is an excellent tool, providing multiple backup destinations, including several cloud options. However, what few seem to touch on, and why I don't use Hyper Backup for my NAS data to external drives, is how horribly slow it is for some reason. Even backing up to an external USB 3 device results in speeds of under 20 Mb/sec and often under 10! USB Copy, though not as sophisticated, allowed me to backup my NAS at close to the max transfer rate of the external device (circa 200Mb/sec), thus cutting days from my backup time. IfHyperBackup performed similarly, I'd use it for all my backups. At the moment, I only use it to backup a small shared folder with critical data direct to C2 storage.

    Honestly, I feel like Synology has basically abandoned much of their productivity software. As a home user, homeschooling our seven kids, I thought this would be a great alternative to the Google Drive universe. But Synology Office has been sitting with no significant updates for four years. When I bought my first Synology NAS, I thought the available cloud apps were not a bad first cut, and expected regular updates. For example, it is ridiculous that there is no way to set a default page size, such as 8.5x11 Letter for a document. Or widow and orphan control. Or even just a tiny bit more functionality in headers and footers. Only the most basic support exists. I could go on and on. I’m not sure why they would even bother, if they had no intention of making it a direct competitor to Google docs. I’m not even expecting an equal experience, but at least make a better attempt to provide a quality showing of the very basics.

So, I either have to subscribe to Office 365 or buy the next release of Office 2025. Other than that I was considering Synology Office as an option. I'm glad I see these applications in the same way. It's like Synology has the right idea but misses the mark either completely or in a lot of regards. They just need to do focus groups and listen to feedback to power users like yourself to make Synology "the choice" instead of "one of the choices" for Prosumer / power users.

    Yes, you can. Synology Drive functions like Google Drive, DropBox, etc, so it won't be the exact same, but it will be similar (and possibly even better depending on what you're trying to do). The best option IMO is to access it remotely using a VPN. Tailscale is a very easy option to configure!

    Thanks for this great video! Enjoy watching it. Virtual Machine Manager is in the top tier for me. I use it to run Proxmox Backup Server on the NAS via NFS. 2GB RAM only -- I currently have a DS1522+ with 8GB of RAM. Runs great and backs up my proxmox cluster. It's the only VM I run and seems appropriate it's on the same server the data is stored on. Also I get snapshot replication of the VM as well as the PBS datastore -- which I perform at the same time so I can rollback both of them together if I want everything to match perfectly.

    Been watching your videos about Synology .... got a subscriber. Keep up the good job. If a device in the network is compromised and it is the source of a dictionary attack against the NAS, by excluding the local subnet the device's IP will never be blocked and no notification will ever be sent. What else can one do then?

  • @WunderTechTutorials
    @WunderTechTutorialsКүн бұрын

    Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, the options are limited. You can configure blocking for the local subnet as well but there's a higher chance that you'll indirectly block yourself rather than someone successfully gaining access internally and attacking the NAS (at least that should be the scenario). I'd try and lock down the attack surface by auditing port forwards and removing any that aren't required (use a VPN for everything), segregating your network to get less-trusted devices on a subnet that's blocked from accessing the NAS, and trying to set up notifications on the NAS to inform you if anything seems suspicious.

    Great video. I found the comments about the Surveillance Station especially useful. I've been searching the internet for a long time for a good alternative that allows me to view the cameras with minimal lag and offers the possibility of managing them from my iPhone. Before hearing your comment about Blue Iris, I had already looked for information about this software, but nowhere explains it from the perspective of an amateur user wanting to switch from Synology. I don't mind if I have to buy a separate server and install Proxmox or Unraid. It would help me a lot to know how you have configured this software. It would be very helpful if you made a video about it. Greetings from Europe.

    The only comment I would add is that the mail server on Synology is top class bringing together all the pieces needed to match the big boys. But be prepared to make sure you have all the foundational components in place. Your own domain name, static IP from your ISP, good understanding of DNS records, and keeping up to date with new security features (domain key) when mail exchange happens. I have been running mail servers since I read the Linux bible which had used postfix, as mail exchange, and Squirrell mail as the IMAP mail client. My biggest challenge was making sure my IP was static and that the ISP did not block the all-important port 25. If you are comcast home user, you are pretty much out of luck inbound port 25 is blocked and even with a special request without a business account you can't unblock it. This is my 5th year with Synology mail server self-hosted at home and I have yet to have any issues with using it. For the average home user, I agree don't do it, if you are a home lab or tech enthusiast give it a shot.

    Great video as always and I don't disagree on anything you said. On that note. I do use Synology's mail server only not the way it was intended. I use it as a mail client that goes to my ISP's web mail and downloads my mail, as I hate webmail!! I do wish the full features of the server were available, "especially filtering and virus protection." I've left tons of feedback regarding this, as other users agree only to have it ignored.

    Backing up the Synology NAS : I'm not sure if this is on topic or not... My files are about 5% work files and 95% multimedia. I already backup my entire Synology NAS to 2 other NAS's ( both QNAP ). I also backup my work files to OneDrive. So, I think I'm well protected. What I would like to protect myself against is, if I completely lost the Synology NAS, I would like to be able to recover DSM, the apps, and all of the settings without doing a manual reinstallation. I do regularly backup the Synology configuration files through Control Panel. So, is there a way to just backup DSM and related stuff ? Would putting the data and media files on a separate volume help so that just DSM and related files could be backed up ?

  • @WunderTechTutorials
    @WunderTechTutorialsКүн бұрын

    There is, sadly, it requires a second Synology NAS or Synology C2 though. That's how the ABB or Hyper Backup (entire NAS) backup works. It basically takes a clone of DSM with all of the data and if you ever have to restore it, you're restoring everything. The downside though is that it can't go to a QNAP, it has to be a Synology or C2.

Thks for keeping-it-simple/big-picture & staying out of the damned endless geek details. I got a DS734+ just for the home & been trying to get a keeping-it-simple/big-picture software ontology forever. ??Request you identify which apps should be off-loaded to other computers instead of on your synology NAS & why/how (ex: video transcoding)??

  • @WunderTechTutorials
    @WunderTechTutorialsКүн бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words! Overall, I think it depends. If you have a 723+, then transcoding has to be moved to a different device, but I think that's when you start to go down the home lab path. Will you virtualize? Run it all on a server OS via the CLI? For a lot of those reasons, it's hard to say what can/should be offloaded, but overall, I think my stance is to keep the NAS as basic as you can while still getting functionality out of it (backups, photos, media station if you don't want HW transcoding, document management), and move other things (Docker, VPN, DNS...and even something like surveillance) to a different device if possible.

    Have you considered a second NAS ? I have a Synology DS920+ and a QNAP. The weaknesses in one are usually made up for by the strengths of the other. QNAP can be somewhat more technical to use but I started with zero knowledge on NAS and QNAP was the first one that I bought. Much of what you learned with your Synology will apply to the QNAP. You can backup one to the other and also use either one for the task(s) that it is best at.

    I wanted to love Synology Notestation for the privacy aspect of it. But I have tried, and tried, and tried to make it work. It is really truly absolutely embarrassing for Synology. And after several queries to technical support over four years, their response has always been very cavalier. “We don’t publish our development roadmap”. So about once a year, I ask what’s going on, and they basically tell me to just wait, and watch for updates. When I politely suggest that they seem to have abandoned the product, they become incredulous and dismissive. I have not been impressed with Synology, in that regard. Having said that, I agree with Frank, that the system foundation of Synology products, DSM, is absolutely rocksolid. Now I just need to find a better office cloud to install on it.

  • @WunderTechTutorials
    @WunderTechTutorialsКүн бұрын

    ABB is a great option! The main downside for some is that you have to back up the entire NAS, but in that context when that's your goal, I wouldn't switch. I've tested/used it for backup and restoring a Synology NAS and it was flawless, so IMO, no need to split it out unless you only want to back up the data, etc.

I also have OneDrive on Cloud Sync and OneDrive on my main PC so my writing and spreadsheets are saved to OneDrive twice, once from my PC and once from my Synology. I'm a tad confused. 1. In UniFi Network, when you select Aggregate, it says "Make sure to enable port aggregation on the downlink device first before enabling it on this device." 2. In Synology, when you create Bond, and highlight the "i" button next to IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation it says "IEEE 802.3ad LACP must be enabled on your switch beforehand" So which one are you supposed to do first exactly?

  • @leftywhat
    @leftywhatКүн бұрын

    Well for anyone wondering... a) I tried to first turn on aggregation on the switch in UniFi network, and found out that then you cannot access the NAS to turn on a Bonded connection. So the answer is to create a bonded lan first on the NAS, wait for it to finish, it will say an error that it couldn't establish or whatever (you can definitely still access the nas fine).... then go into UniFi and turn on aggregation for the two ports... once its completed, the error in Synology is gone. I'm going to assume, if I need to reverse it, I would first disable port aggregation in UniFi. Then log into Synology (which will show an error in the bonded connection status) and simply remove the Bonded Channel.

  • @leftywhat
    @leftywhatКүн бұрын

    Eh... so I've tested the speeds and noticed if using 2 PCs, copying say a 5GB file each at the same time, they're not getting their 1Gbps (~125MB/s) bandwidth each, its still splitting a single 1Gb connection, so one PC gets 57MB and the other gets 57MB a, total around 115MB or so. I now assume this is because I've got a UDM Pro and a Ubiquiti switch connected together via 1x 1Gb lan cable. I assuming I need to use 2x cables and create a bonded aggregate so that there's 2Gbps between the UDM Pro and the USW-16-POE switch as well, and then it should work? (even when my 2x PCs and the NAS were all connected to the USW-16-POE?). We'll scrap that idea, UDM Pro doesn't have aggregation, it has a 10G SPF port, but then my switch has 2x 1G SPF Ports. Hrmmm wonder if this entire exercise has been a waste of time.

  • @leftywhat

    Excellent Video regarding SMB3 SMB3 Multichannel - My Synology DS920+ has 2x 1Gb NICs and My PC has 1x 2.5Gb NIC, but my switch is only 1Gb... so SMB3 multichannel is pointless until I upgrade the switch. Therefore, in my situation, Link Aggregation should be used. It will not increase the speeds to a single device, but it will double the bandwidth that the NAS can output (2Gb), meaning 2x PCs with a 1Gb NIC, can each have 1Gb, rather than the NAS using a since 1Gb NIC, which would result in both PCs ending up with a 0.5Gb / 500Mb
