Syd Barrett - Octopus
Музыка
Trip to heave and ho, up down, to and fro'
you have no word
trip, trip to a dream dragon
hide your wings in a ghost tower
sails crackiling at ev'ry plate we break
cracked by scattered needles
little minute gong
coughs and clears his throat
madam you see before you stand
hey ho, never be still
the old original favourite gran
grasshoppers green herbarian band
and the tune they play in us confide...
so trip to heave and ho, up down, to and fro'
you have no word
Please leave us here
close our eyes to the octopus ride!
Isn't it good to be lost in the wood
isn't it bad so quiet there, in the wood
twenty even less to me than I thought
with a honey plough of yellow prickly seeds
clover honey pots and mystic shining feed...
well, the madcap laughed at the man on the border
hey ho, huff the talbot
Cheetah he cried shouted kangaroo
so through their tree they cried
Please leave us here
close our eyes to the octopus ride!
The madcap laughed at the man on the border
hey ho, huff the talbot
the winds they blew and the leaves did wag
and they'll never put me in their bag
the seas will reach and always see
so high you go, so low you creep
the winds it blows in tropical heat
the drones they throng on mossy seats
the squeaking door will always creep
two up, two down we'll never meet
so merrily trip for good my side
Please leave us here
close our eyes to the octopus ride

Syd in pictures like this with the hair, darkened eyes and cigarette just looks like the future of punk and of grunge and goth, this guy is important

Very spot on comment.i❤️💚💛
You can argue about who came first with "psychedelic" rock, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Syd. Revolver may have come first, but Syd had a new concept of melody shapes that tumble and spill over bar lines, defying conventional logic and form. It's truly psychedelic because our minds are not perfectly linear machines, but organic and more willy-nilly than we like to admit. He takes you deep into your own consciousness as your mind is grappling with his elusive and catchy songs. In its way, completely untouchable genius. I bet the Beatles probably envied Syd at the time. Haven't even addressed the "octopus ride" of the lyrics.

I hate those guys who say that syd was nothing but a loser syd was kinda the inventor of psychedelic era a lot of artists like beatles took the idea to create psychedelic music from pink floyd there is a video on youtube where the Beatles watch one of pink Floyd's concert there is nothing better than that rest in peace we love you :)

***** No it was´t may be 1970, though I´m quite sure it´s from the 1969 sessions of his first album. The last time Syd saw a studio as recording artist was 1970. And personaly I don´t like the Pink Floyd stuff without Barrett but I like a few of his solo songs, that are still glooming through the ruins. But about octopus I´m afraid I have nothing else to say than I already did: the only great thing here is, that EMI was mad enough to publish this masterpiece as a single.

+D4RKKN1GHT 420 Yes Pink Floyd ain´t the Beatles. Off course not !! As the Beatles could write a good song and where able to sing up to their end, while Pink Floyd just bores with this empty, inflated space rock stuff that at best consists of one creepy idea. Have you ever seen a bad dokumentation about sailboats or mating seeturtels made in the 70ties ? Be sure the soundtrack is echoes or shine on you crazy diamond. Well if Volkswagen haven´t alredy named a golf after Pink Floyd that would have been a good idea, guess the other versions where Genesis and Supertramp

Love his aggressive acoustic guitar--how he mixes it with electric--narractive poetry is great!
It means a lot to me- just because it catches the weird, wild spirit of the time !
when i was in highschool and barely knowing about pink floyd....there was a great debate about 'who was pink floyd'. well i asked an obvious expert, my buddy kurt getchell (wearer of a denim jacket with floyd patches on every stitch) i asked kurt, who is pink floyd, roger or david? without missing a beat he said SYD BARRETT! nuf ced
It's so good to know there are people in the world who would write a song around such a magical fair ride- very free and pure and inspiring

Haha really punky ! Although it reminds me on Brian Jones Solo on I wanna be you man. Or the Great Kinks Solos on their early Beat-Singles. But 1969 this is really outmoded. No uncool.
Long time Syd Barret and Floyd fan... Brought here by Amazon's Electric Dreams anthology.
I love Syd 💖 he was a genuis
Man was Barret great! No need to say i`m sorry for him. He has so much fans to suit him right even in the afterlife. Thank you Syd for the great music!
Having seen just about every band/artist that has breathed since the 1950s. I can honestly say that a tiny handful have done it for me and left a huge impression.(1) Early Bowie with the Spiders...Starman etc. (2) The New York Dolls...Jet Boy etc.(3) Pink Floyd ....See Emily play. I rest my case!

A few days ago I went to Earl's Court, to Wetherby Mansions where Syd lived between 1968-1970 and where this photo was taken. It was so so special, so atmospheric there. I always liked these pictures for the Madcap Laughs sessions. They had some atmosphere I have always liked. And even the place has a special atmosphere too. I loved that steet. It felt like Syd was there...so strange.

Why can't we bring up Syd without mentioning drugs...I know I know I know
Syd Barrett was the heart and soul of Pink Floyd. Listen to Piper at the Gates of Dawn. They were diminished when he left. T he energy was absent. His is a very sad story.
Syd was a genius..
This song is brilliant!
"well, the madcap laughed at the man on the border hey ho, huff the talbot" Best part of the song.
This song so deep on so many levels. ❤️💚💛
Threatened by shadows at night exposed in the light...keep shining u crazy diamond..
IMO Syd was trying to achieve a wall of sound and in turn happiness in his music and again IMO he succeeded big time Kudos Syd!!! :) Words don`t necessarily have to be given meaning and can also be viewed as abstract sounds that add to the overall atmosphere developed in the music Lastly some would reason that Syd was one of the few sane ones among us by achieving a peaceful state of mind Maybe we are the crazies stuck focussed on external realities that never really satisfy? Peace
syd barrett is a ghost, a shadow that floats over all pink's songs

"The drones they throng on mossy seats"
@TheOneartist I'm reading 'Syd Barrett: A Very Irregular Head' just now, which is a painstakingly well researched biography and very sympathetically and incisively written. It also quotes several sources but with Syd's enjoyment of old poems and writers like Hilaire Belloc and Lewis Carroll, then you can see where he managed to conjure that whimsical magic into songs from sometimes obscure lyrics!

yes forever.
Having taken LSD several times in my youth (80s-90s) I sometimes wonder If I'd have recovered if I'd been around to take it in the 60s/early 70s. Reportedly much stronger and far less awareness in those times. Syd and many others including Peter Green seemed to struggle recovering from acid induced psychosis. Less common today, as was the genius of Syd.
@CrimeThinkBeats
Жыл бұрын
Acid doesn't cause any permanent psychosis. Look it up. There's no evidence of it doing so. Syd had underlying mental issues, which drugs can trigger or accelerate the onset of.
