Swingblade SAWMILL Build Ep.7 - Height Adjustment, Upright Supports
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I'm building a circular sawmill from scratch. The function of the mill is in its name "Swingblade" - the blade swings 90 degrees making it possible to cut both ways while moving the carriage up and down the log resulting in dimensional lumber in one pass. I built a chainsaw mill ten years ago and milled lumber that I used for my cabin / sauna house project. Then I built a bandsaw mill five years ago and used the cut lumber to build a partition in my barn I currently call my workshop. Both of them worked great, bandsaw mill was faster than chainsaw mill for sure. But I think I can make an even faster mill and swingblade sawmill in my opinion is just what I'm looking for. There are different types of swingblade sawmills, one type utilizes a railway system where the saw carriage rides on rails so both rails are in the way when loading the logs. I want to build a beam-type mill where the saw carriage is suspended on a beam over the log that sits on a couple of wedges so it doesn't roll off while cutting. There will be no need to clamp the log down. Cut depth and width adjustments are all going to be made on the sawmill beam end frames. And to top it off - it will basically be a portable sawmill due to its build properties but I think it's only going to sit in my yard regardless of the portability.
In this video I'm fabricating the height adjustment system. This consists of a generic 1T/2000lbs hand winch with steel cable. I'm modifying the drum so it can crank a roller chain. Using a chain is more accurate than using just the steel cable. I'm also making a mount for the bottom sprocket mounts for the height adjustment chain. The beam gets another upright to slide on. Uprights get diagonal supports. The log taper adjustment winch gets a mount. This will not be modified and will have the steel cable on it since it will only be marginally cranked whilst the log is heavily tapered. I also received the beam material today so hopefully we can soon build the actual 6+m beam and the sawmill will take it's actual shape.
I'm gonna try and use basic tools like angle grinder as much as possible (except lathe) so I'm gonna enjoy this project even more. I hope you will too!
This sawmill build is based on www.turbosawmill.com "Manual Mill" design and it is patent pending.

Donn, if you want to lubricate the pieces of box tube, but not make it sticky, candle wax works rather well. It only becomes sticky above 30°C.

This mill is based on the idea of Turbosawmill. These guys in New-Zealand are the minds behind this idea of this type of a sawmill.
I can't help but think of your first sawmill build which is what got me to subscribe. Much different working conditions in those days.

These build episodes are enjoyable-great job as always. The trees in your area [and beyond] have no idea what their in for. I love the fact that it's portable in case you see something that would be easier to cut on site vs hauling bulky timber. Looking forward to ep.8 God bless.

Ohhhh, that’s a mock-up beam? I thought this was all just to mill boards from firewood logs 😂 Coming along really nicely 😎
Great progress, Donn. The only changes I'd make to ensure an easier method of lifting would be to have a piece of 50x50mm box steel tube across the cutting gantry head. Have 2 pulleys mounted in each end then have a single 12v vehicle winch on one pillar and the other end ran upto the other pillar creating a simplistic yet easy to operate lift system which is commonly found on larger hydraulic presses for the bed lift

He will run the steel cable through the six meters and fixate it on the bottom where the idle sprocket is: this way the steel cable will be adjusted to adjust parallelism and only the chain side will do the height adjustment. It's a pretty clever system, you'll see

Cimung aling great. My inoy question: did you ever consider two fixed blades mounted at 90° vs the single swing blade?
@DonnDIY

I did consider two blade setup but it would be heavier and more complex. Single blade has less parts, is lighter and is cheaper to maintain.

Hi, I use Markal products from werkado.eu, black fine long tip marker and white medium paint marker. To make a precise cut I usually scrape a line on metal with a carbide tip and then cut next to the line.👍

I have been watching this build for a while now, I have just one question... Are the logs going parallel to the tracks? If so, it seems like when the blade swings to vertical, it will be perpendicular to the log.... I am familiar with Lucas mills, and they pivot on an axis that is parallel with the direction of cut.
@keithviolette5870

At the beginning of the video here mentioned that the short truss frame is only temporary, so it will fit in the shop. and that he will be making one 6 meters (19') long. You are correct, the swing axis is parallel to the 6m truss.
