"Swing 42" with Martin Taylor & Robin Nolan

I first played with Martin Taylor back in the Isle Of Man when I was 20 years old. It was a life changing experience for me then and it inspired me to follow my passion of playing jazz.
Fast forward to a few months ago in London and I'm sitting with Martin Taylor in my brothers' house making music and swapping stories with my old friend. It was just as inspiring as the first time round and I was so happy that we captured it all on film so we could share the magic.
My interview with Martin lasted over an hour and we ran the whole unedited version in Gypsy Jazz Secrets Magazine, and also a couple of duets.
The video you're watching now is an impromptu version of Swing 42 which is an old Hot Club De France classic written by Django & Stephane. Martin also taught a great lesson on how he improvises over Swing 42 which we present
in the magazine.
You can check out the whole Martin Taylor feature in the magazine at www.GypsyJazzSecrets.com.
Dr. Martin Taylor mbe is one of the best jazz guitarists on the planet and to have him share his story and music with us is an honor and something which I'm sure will inspire you as well. Enjoy!

I like the rhythm Martin plays here. It's not the standard gypsy rhythm but it sounds cool.

Sounds great.....suggestion: just watch the volume on the mix, your guitar is almost always 15% louder than your "guest" players, makes it far less listenable.

Robin....great stuff. Martin.. great stuff..BUT...SORRY.. Martin. Its only one little thing and I'm no jazz master like you but...its just the gypsy jazz thing. Please play a nice straight, simple, straight, chuggy rhythm for Robin and any other gypsy jazzer, Its the essence of the art. I do appreciate that you are playing lots of nice inversions etc but that style has its place. By the way Mr'Taylor I would have your jazzy babies you are a God!!

But without a bassist it honestly adds some needed movement. I grow tired of hearing gypsy guitarists playing without a bassist, it leaves much to be desired. The most important thing is: does it swing? And this guy swings harder than almost any gypsy jazz compers that I hear around.

I know what you are saying about the standard gypsy chunk-chunk strum but while watching I'd been thinking just the opposite - the most amazing thing about this vid IS Martin's jawdropping chord movement throughout. The solos are fine but the way Martin effortlessly moves through all those chord changes and keeps the groove really flowing with just one guitar accompaniment. Fantastic player, "next level" stuff.

dotcom58732 yes it swings. Harder than damn near anything on the planet. Don’t have to walk the dog. Edit : I’m talking about without the bass player etc. Martin needs to back off on the rhythm.

Robin seems to not totally get the gist of the song, Martin is far more advanced in Jazz though so he carried him through.
