I ran a sub 17min 5k on 2 runs a week. I was swimming 18/20k metres a week af the same time. I most certainly wouldn't have achieved this without the swimming

@@TheRunExperience I come from a swimming background and took up triathlon after a long break from any form of cardio based sport. I always struggled with running injuries (poor gait/knees) so limited myself to 2 runs a week and focused on what I do best, and thats swimming. Plenty of the old boys in the pool who have swam every morning for their entire lives look absolutely fantastic.

Wow, similar to my story (commented above). I ran 19:45 for 5k as a beginner runner on 3 runs a week and total mileage of 20-25k per week of running. I was swimming most days then. In the few years since then I changed to running 5 days per week, usually 45k-50k per week of running, and swimming only 1-2 times per week. I have only been able to do average running times like 21-22mins for 5k like this. I have tried different running programs over the years and many runners have not understood why I had this experience. But it's only been swimming that worked for me. So yes, feeling frustrated and going to try increase the swimming again.

Absolutely 100%. I have a background in swimming before I ever started running. When I first started running a few years ago I was mainly still swimming and this is when I ran my all time fastest 5ks. In the years that followed I decreased the swimming (while still maintaining some) and increased the running (due to enjoying it more) but have actually become slower at running. Right now I am feeling frustrated by not being faster at running and the only way I know to improve this is get in the pool more.

Great video. I started running last August. My resting heart rate was 60. Since the Y reopened I have been swimming 1-2 times a week and my resting heart rate dropped to 54. So I can see the aerobic benefits I also feel it makes my core more stable.

Yeah totally right swimming is a all round good body workout, don’t think you have to be a perfect freestyle swimmer, long as you get a good amount of lengths in & the arms swinging, the breathing going & the heart pumping, excellent cross training for running 🏃🏼‍♂️👍

Lol. Don't know about that triathlon comment. But cross training works since a lot of the systems used for one sport/activity are used for another. Swimming isn't just good for cardiovascular system but the cardiopulmonary systems as well. Your breaths are deeper and fuller which helps with your running as well. Cycling is meh. Yeah it helps but not as much as you would think especially since there's no or very very little impact which is necessary. Also there are studies that show running even sitting is better for lower Marrow adipose tissue than cycling because there's no impact with cycling. But I may be biased since I'm not a triathlete 😂 yet 😉

I'd guess that a front crawl is more similar to the arm swing during running than a breaststroke or butterfly and therefore being more complimentary to your running.

Ultimately they're all different movement patterns. Sometimes the frog kick in breaststroke can be a little rough on people's knees, but when done properly breastroke can be pretty tough! Free style probably emphasizes more of what the upper body is doing so it's great for shoulder range of mobility etc. You still need to kick in freestyle but all depending on the length and intensity of your set, kicking can be more mellow, or you could even use a pull buoy and not kick at all. In that respect, it's a great compliment to running.

@@thomasmarkowicz3909 i started running a few years ago, but since i was older and out of shape i started swimming with a friend who does ironman. In the end i had to take an adult beginner course one semester - its almost impossible to learn properly without help. The first things u have to do is learn to look straight down, not forward! The wrong angle on head/spine makes u lower body sink and cause enormous drag. The second harder part is to control u breathing both in velocity and time. U will litteraly die in the beginning since u too often dont breathe out all the air u took in. This rises u carbonoxide and u feel panicked and out of breath. The first year i started breathing out with noise and last remaining air more forcefully out just before turning head. Now i breath in mouth (this u must) abd out all nose, but u can try what works for u. Aim to sound like u doing yoga when exhaling, this is what swimmers do. Keep one eye in water when breathing - look underwater with lower eye. Kick from hip, dont bend knees - also creates drag - easier said than done. I lost 15 kg swimming 3 times a week. Had to practice technique alot, fins and boyus r fun to use. Take many breathers in the beginning. Elite swimmers let us swim 10 meters after weeks of breathing excersises, head position, kicking correctly etc. practice... i took me 6 months to swim 400m no stop. With decent training its great fun, maffetone training - pulse is low when u learn breathing. When u swim 800m for the first time u feel great. The coldwater burbs calories like no running under 1,5 hour wont do. It was great for me! But its so technical u should get help!

Good conversation here all around. Talk to any triathlete and they'll talk about the positive benefits of swimming and how it kinda oozes its way into helping the other sports. Are there specific studies on this? I'm not 100% sure, but that's not the argument we are making here (other than being a little cheeky w the 5k remark!). Runners who build and attend to their athletic base, deepen and smooth their breathing, and improve their posture and range of motion will tangibly feel better in their running. Swimming can also be an incredible cardiovascular workout to build your endurance engine. What we are not saying is that swimming is a 100% replacement to your running. It's just a nice compliment for runners to explore to stay strong and healthy and train consistently so they can actually attain their best.
