Swedish Police are the BEST! 🇸🇪 [S3 - Eps. 20]

In this episode I am riding my Honda CB500x "Ronin" to Stockholm to get some maintenance done. I indulge in some Swedish traditions such as eating pea soup with pancakes on Thursdays, ride around the historical city center and have an encounter with the Swedish Police..

I'm from east Africa.. I visited Sweden for 3 months before the pendemic and found them really down to earth, good hearted, kinda shy and very helpful people.. even the police I interacted with during a traffic stop when realised I was a visitor were so helpful explaining to me how to be better than giving me a ticket...I soo admire these people and their culture. It's impossible to convince me otherwise... Bless them!

I moved to Sweden from Germany almost two years ago. And it feels like I have, on the inside, been a Swede all along, because I fit in here perfectly and in Germany really struggled all the time. And probably because I'm in Sweden I got this video on my home page, it's very interesting to see a different perspective on Sweden.

While stationed in Germany in the mid 70’s, as a couple in our mid 20’s, we took leave, vacation, through Denmark and Sweden, by car. We camped during our travels and found a nice campground in Stockholm. It was sunny when we arrived, but the next morning it rained and rained for the next 3 days while we were there. The day we had to leave, it was sunny. Go figure. We toured Stockholm the best we could considering all the rain, but wished we could of done more, without the rain. Stockholm is definitely a beautiful city. Funny story. Being a US Army Soldier and American, traveling has some interesting adventures. After arriving in Sweden, we found a campground along the coast and set up camp. The wife and I decided to eat at the cafe in the campground, as opposed to trying to find a place outside the campground. When our waiter arrived at our table, we asked him if he had an English menu, which he said no. We asked him if he had a German menu, again he said no. We looked at the Swedish menu and with a translation book, we tried to order something. When our meal arrived, what we ordered were cold pancakes. We started to eat, when the owner of the cafe came by and stopped us from eating. Everybody in the cafe had a big laugh on us Americans, then the owner brought us an English menu. We then ordered, ate and when we went to pay the bill, the owner said, since we took their joke on us so well, the meal was free. Since something like this had happened to us before, we just shrugged it off and went with the flow. Everyone in the cafe came by our table and told us they were glad we stopped by and hoped we have a good time while visiting their country. Traveling can definitely be an adventure. Just don’t let anything get under your skin.

Wasps like to pick dead insects off the front of your bike but only if they are freshly killed. They search all over the front of cars and bikes and sometimes will check out screens, jackets and helmets. They are not aggressive when they are feeding and easily deterred with a gentle tap, they become more aggressive later in the season when there are less insects and they have to forage for fruit, that is when their nests have started to collapse and they no longer have a colony.

I am 70 so i can remember the first appearance of television... radio with pictures right in our living room. My mother was born in 1916 and we talked now and then about making the change from horse to tractor on the farm... and from the winter horse drawn sleigh to riding in the first car. Technology now has put us at each others virtual fingertips. Riding as you do with several cameras... the feeling is very close to being there. And how you can juggle all of this and puzzle it together for us and make it look like it happens quite casually by itself. Like people say about the bees... busybusybusy, Itchy Boots. I had a similar event in Derby (UK) once . I drove a lefthand van and had some troubles finding my hotel for that day. I was tired from all the driving and parked somewhere that wasn't allowed but i had to look at my maps again. A policecar and even an ambulance stopped near me and they got out. I thought i was in trouble but the policeman said, ' are ya lost mate' and i told him i couldn't find my hotel. He put his hand on my shoulder ,turned me around and said, if you look and that building with the red flags, there it is. The woman at the ambulance lived in Holland for a couple of years and just chatted with me in dutch, because she saw that i was shyting my pants for a brief moment because i thought i would get a ticket for bad parking. Lovely people. Another surprise occurred to me when a lady from that hotel started talking to me in South african language to me and she was curious if a dutchman could understand South african and vice versa. It was a great day and a great adventure

Nowadays it's still common to eat it every year during a winter celebration called Laskiainen (associated with Shrove Tuesday ). Also worth noting that the pancakes are not the same as in the Netherlands or the USA, but this one is made in the oven. It's a very comforting food combination to eat especially in the winter months!
