Swampfox Sentinel 3 MOA Auto-Brightness on Staccato C DUO

The Swampfox Sentinel 3 MOA red-dot sight with automatic brightness adjustment on the Staccato C DUO. (Replaces the Sig ROMEOZero sight that I originally put on the gun.) I'm still waiting for the mounting plate from Dawson Precision for the Holosun 507K, but is the Sentinel a better sight?

    Just saw this video in our suggested videos feed, we were unaware of your channel before. A few points and answers to questions you posed: 1. Our optics are made in China, our company HQ is near Denver, Colorado. There are significant US resources here for design, research, and development but manufacturing is in China. We want to make USA made units some day but you’ll have to add a “1” in front of the current price tag when we do. 2. We didn’t include the faux rear iron sight notch in our dot for two reasons. First we get more elevation adjustment this way (notice where we have to put the elevation screw) and secondly we don’t want to make point of impact with iron sights our customer service problem. Right now if a guy shoots low left all the time he can just keep adjusting his dot sight until he figures it out or gets better at shooting. If he shoots low left with our integral “rear iron sight” he’s going to call customer service and demand to know what’s wrong with our scope body and how can he drift the scope body over to “fix” it. The only way to avoid this sort of customer service headache is to make iron sight performance not our business at all. 3. You won’t see us or anyone else incorporate the Trijcon “horns” on the sides of the scope body. They patented that and we know they like to sue folks who they think have copied their features. 4. THANK YOU for demonstrating good pistol performance at 50 yards. I’ve made a similar point in my own videos that in a world with active shooters as part of the potential threat out there, your pistol may need to do more than just be a 10-foot “get offa me” self defense tool. 5. You are correct, these have NO clicks in the elevation and windage adjust. It’s a goal for a future product but for now there are some valid reasons why we didn’t do it this time. Also you are totally right about the sensor being on the left so it faces your body and is in a relatively “dark” environment while concealed. The auto adjust needs to be fast enough that you can’t “outrun it” with a fast draw to first shot time. You can have a lightning fast draw from the dark environment of concealment and as soon as you present the gun out you need a useable dot brightness immediately.

    Swampfox Optics, thank you for discovering Rider’s Range and for providing a detailed response. I have pinned it to the top of the comments. My first experience with Swampfox has made me a believer, and as a Vietnam Veteran, I do my best to support Veteran-owned companies. I just received the Liberty with pic-rail and Ironside (fantastic communication and delivery time, by the way) and mounted it on my S&W 327 TRR8 - review coming shortly. Over the weekend I placed an order for the Justice to go on my Canik TP9SFx and I’m considering the Blade for my Beretta CX4 carbine. I’ll be reviewing those this fall. Thanks again for your detailed comment.

    Swampfox, you guys definitely have my attention. Is there a drawback by integrating a battery tray or battery placement on top of the optix without rezeroing? America is getting lazy and prefer this kind of convenience.

    @@Mann.withtheplann Sorry just saw this, I didn't get a notification or anything. We did a side tray system with our first gen Kingslayer and then a top feed tray system with our second gen Liberty and Justice. The top feed system is our favorite, it's tougher, survives drops better, doesn't rely on tiny little screws that can strip out or snap. Unfortunately with the smaller RMSC footprint Sentinel series there was simply no room for either system. It would make the optic way too big, with massive overhang on each side of the slide on single stack guns like Glock 43X or Sig P365XL. To create a battery tray system we would have to go with a tiny battery because of the space taken up by the tray system. We decided instead of a tiny little battery like an LR44 that you would swap with a tiny top feed system every 3 months, it was better to delete the quick change system, put in the battery from the bottom, and that allowed us to use a much more standard CR2032 battery that anyone can get and it lasts two YEARS. There's no such thing as a free lunch when you're trying to take everything we expect from full size red dots but shrink it down and make the whole optic the size of my thumb.

    MDpolo, I’ve been an iron sights guy for a half century, but I’m converting to optics on my carry gun, with one caveat: I must have decent iron sights on the gun. The ROMEOZero, Shield RMSc and Holosun 507K have a built-in rear sight notch that is accurate enough for defensive work. The Swampfox doesn’t have a sight notch, but the Staccato C DUO plate has a great rear sight that is drift-adjustable for windage. So, I’m very comfortable carrying that combination.

  • @RidersRange

    @RidersRange

    3 жыл бұрын

    Phil P, thank you for watching and for your kind compliment. The Staccato "carry" guns - C and C2 DPO (formerly DUO) - were designed for the micro optics, such as the Sig ROMEOZero, Shield RMSC, etc., and the Sentinel has that same footprint. (The Holosun HS507K has the same footprint, but the alignment lugs are in a different location, so I don't believe Staccato or Dawson have made a mounting plate for that one yet.) The larger footprint of the Trijicon RMR and DeltaPoint Pro would hang over the slide on the C and C2, so Staccato opted for the smaller optic. The Staccato XC is not intended for concealed carry, so it is cut for the larger RMR/DPP optics (which would include the Swampfox Liberty and Justice sights). I hope that helps.

Wondering if you had similar difficulties, if so, what did you do? Noticed Dawson released the Holosun 507K DUO plate. Thanks

    I'm currently looking at the sigp365 xl and the c duo. I know the price is very different but owning both you the standard 365, I was wondering how you think they compare and is the sti worth the extra money. Also which do you prefer to carry year round? Thanks for the video.

    St. Michael, I'm a 1911 guy at heart, so I believe the Staccato C DUO is definitely worth it - enough so that I paid full retail from Dawson to get one. My two primary carry guns are the Staccato C SUO with Swampfox Sentinel optic and the Sig P365XL with Holosun HS507K optic. Which one I carry depends on what I am doing or wearing that day. Both guns are great out to 50 yards and wonderfully reliable. However, as much as I hate to admit it, if I could only have one (heaven forbid), it would be the P365XL. It is lighter for all day carry, it shoots just as well as the Staccato C, and it holds more ammo. I carry it with the 12-round mag (with Tactical Development baseplate) and carry the 15-round mag as a spare (also with the TD baseplate). With the Hogue HandAll grip sleeve and the Armory Craft trigger, it is a great carry gun.

    David, all but one of my other red-dot sights are manual, so I had to try the Sentinel auto-adjust, and for the most part, I'm happy with it. However (there's always a "however"), when I am in a dark or shaded area and aiming into a light area, particularly against a light colored target, the dot becomes very difficult to pick up (that's why I insist on co-witnessed iron sights on a carry gun). On my optics that are manually adjustable, I keep the dot bright enough to see well in daylight. It is very bright in dim light, but more manageable than the faint dot of the auto-adjust. I recently bought the Sentinel with manual adjustment and I plan to put that on my Staccato for daily carry. I hope that helps.

    Paul, I’m carrying the Staccato C DUO with that Swampfox Sentinel in a Garrett Industries Silent Thunder STX 2.0 every day. I’m comfortable with 9 rounds plus a reload. But - quick presentation and shooting with a red dot takes time to learn, and I’m still learning.

    @Jacob Garrison, I’m a 1911 guy, but I often carry a P365XL. My Staccato C DUO is the best shooting 1911 I own, but I’d be very happy if the 365 was my only carry gun. It’s just as accurate and reliable, but in a slightly smaller and lighted package - with greater capacity.

    Scott, when you say "mind didn't come with a rear sight", were you referring to the Swampfox Sentinel not having an iron sight notch, or the mounting plate on the Staccato C DUO not having a rear sight? the Swampfox sights don't have a built-in rear sight like the Sig ROMEOZero or Holosun HS407/507 red-dot sights to. However, the Staccato C DUO has a rear sight dovetailed into the optic optic mounting plate.
