I picked up an 09 for cheap because it won't go into or above 2nd. I have a parts bike that is an 02 (I also have a running 02) and am curious as to the compatability of all that hardware. Thanks for the run-through. I think I will tackle this. Or at least make a mess. Who knows.

I think the 02 is last year of the carbed version, right? Not sure if the shift components are compatible w/ the 2nd gen, but I think the engine was essentially unchanged. You could get on a parts fiche to see if the part numbers for what you're looking to replace are all the same. When I need to do that, I just poke around on my local dealership's parts page on their website, or Partzilla.

thanks for sharing. my gen1 sv650 occasionally has difficulty shifting like it works smooth 50% of the and other 50% it hangs up and is difficult to shift. this video gave me some confidence to go in there and try and figure out what's wrong with it. im not the original owner and i know the bike has been dropped before. do you have any advice I could use?

I'd just take it apart and see how it looks inside. See if everything is where it needs to be and nothing is bent or broken. From my understanding, the internal shift forks (between the gear sets inside the cases) are incredibly hard to bend and the problem is usually somewhere in this setup. Ride it around for a bit and see if you can find a pattern, like if the shifting problem is always from 2-3 or only when downshifting from 5-4, or any other pattern you can find. It may be your clutch cable just needs adjusted and doesn't always release properly, or that one of the components in the shift linkage shown in this video is bent slightly, making it bind. If you find you need to replace anything, get ahold of mad8v.com to see if he has the parts you need, that'll be a lot cheaper than bikebandit or partzilla. If you can get ahold of the parts shown here, replace one at a time and see if that helps.

This was just today (10/5/18). I've got the parts I talked about on order, should be here early next week and I can see if it fixes the issue.

One of the guys on SVrider.com saw your video and posted you a comment, just passing it on. From your video it really does look like the bolt that holds the shift star is bent....making the star wobble as it rotates. This could very well bind it against the roller detent so replacing the bolt is a step in the right direction. One caution: replace ONE part at a time and test function...don't just throw all the new parts at it because if it still doesn't work and you've changed a bunch of things you won't know which is what. I'd put the new star retention bolt on first and check to see that it rotates only in one plane and give it a test. Might be all you need to do. Oh...in the video it's a little hard to see but it almost looks like the shift lever on the shaft isn't at 90 degrees to the shift pedal linkage. If you try one spline each way you can verify if where you have it is the closest to 90. Once you reassemble the star mechanism side be sure the lever return position is consistent. One tooth off on the shift lever can really play hell with the leverage and travel during shifting...but that's not what's binding it up now....just a thought for after that problem is fixed. Oh...and have you investigated the short shift levers that are available? GSXR's are quite a bit shorter which reduces the foot lever travel and makes for a much easier/quicker shift though the reduced lever does increase the effort needed. I'd much rather need a little more effort but not have to move the shifter as far while shifting...just seems to work better. Good luck!

I mean, I talked for 15 minutes straight. Not sure what I didn't cover that would've been sufficient for your exceedingly needy situation. None of the other nearly 4,000 people who've viewed it (as of this time) seemed to think I missed anything worthwhile. Maybe you just need a snack, better call upstairs to have mom heat up some hot pockets for you.

If that's your attitude, I feel terrifically sorry for your bikes and their future owners. Shop manuals have incredibly important information like torque specs, order of operations, and service limits for parts, not to mention how much easier they make it to properly undertake whatever job you're doing. Every person I've ever talked to who half-ass calls themselves a mechanic swears by shop manuals, and often use multiple manuals for the same job.
