I had one of these as my first bike and when you respect the power and torque of this one, it's a great bike if you have that mindset. great sound, smooth powerband, and cheap parts can't go wrong

I’m riding a 2003 SV1000S now. I’ve owned a lot of bikes, including a ‘99 SV650N that I bought that year, its first year. I walked into the Suzuki dealer and bought it without even test riding it. A V-twin naked sport bike? That was an easy call in ‘99. There’s not much else quite like it. Right now it’s my daily. I’ll always have this litre bike in my stable. Love the engine. Must adjust the Throttle Position Sensor so the fuel injection provides more fuel earlier in the rev. Stock, there’s not enough fuel being provided between 2.5k and 2.8k. But that can be lowered and that helps tremendously. I’ve never found anything about this bike to be scary. If you love toque you’ll love the SV1000. It can be mellow if you want, or it can roar. Suzuki did a great job of making a bike that can appeal to different moods. But mostly it’s just a lot of fun. Btw, that red 2005 is a looker.

i bought my SV1000S as my first motorcycle (with 30years old). I love the bike and i can't imagine to drive another bike. There are great bikes out there, but the SV is made for me. But i wouldn't recommend the SV1000 as a first bike. There are some things u have to understand and to know, then everything is fine. But for a beginner a bike with ABS makes much more sense and is much safer. That's really the only thing i miss on the SV...

While I agree that this is not an ideal beginner bike (650 would be better) I think you've marked it down unnecessarily in some areas. You mention 120BHP as being scarily high, for a 1L bike this is really quite low but I suppose your low mark here is OK however you then mark it so low (negative) for Power Delivery, this is crazy IMO. The delivery is relatively docile, flexible and predictable, I actually find this area quite underwhelming on my bike. Aero, I agree it does pick up a bit more wind than expected but personally I think this is a good thing for a beginner. Stability/Fitting, I find mine perfectly adequate in stability BUT I have fitted yoke mounted bars and lower footpegs, this combination has transformed the behaviour of the bike, either making these mod's or plumping for an N model (if available in your region) would be a good idea for beginner rider IMO. Reliability As mentioned these are generally reliable but they can have issues with generator, magnets coming loose, expensive if only found at point of fail but easy/cheap to 'head-off'. Clutch is another area where you can guarantee problems this is reasonably expensive to fix (Circa £300 in UK currency), but if you go for the modified alternative should cause no further issues. Issues with parts availability may be regionally dependent, although not a mass seller in UK these sold in sufficient numbers to give a reasonable S/H parts supply here even though they've not been available for 16 years. I don't agree that age is a major factor in reliability, in many cases more modern, complex machines are more likely to fail and cost more to fix. Safety Brakes could be better but are pin sharp, powerful brakes a good idea for a new rider? Not necessarily IMO but I'll accept. What I find difficult to live with is being marked down severely for no ABS, how can you mark it down for something it doesn't have? This bike was release in 2003 so obviously designed earlier, how many bikes did come with ABS in this era. My recollection is that 2008/2010 is about the time when ABS became mass market on bikes and even that were simple affairs not IMU controlled cornering ABS, hence could possible cause more problems than they solve for beginners. Price I think regional variations must be skewing the figures here. Even when new these were relatively cheap in the UK and frequently had to be reduced to shift them. It's hard to imagine them being at 3x the price of a GSXR, I can only imagine pricing structure and desirability is different in NL? Parts expensive? Again I don't see this as a specific issue in UK, no more than many and cheaper than some and based on the relative reliability it's not a great problem, cost to service is not excessive Suzuki parts are priced in such a way as I would not think it worth using aftermarket. Fuel economy - Unfortunately I've not ridden for some time due to injury but I don't recall this being a major issue and on forums I've seen many claiming 50-60MPG which I don't think is bad for a bike from this era. Based on all the above I think this bike has been marked a bit lower than it should be although overall I agree not great for a beginner. If a beginner really must have the SV I say get the N model or swap out the bars and footpegs.

Quite some amazing insights on the SV! The rear tire locking up is a real no-go for beginner riders, therefore the minus 1. I do agree with most of your points and I have to admit I wanted the score to go down, because I will never recommend a bike like this for a beginner. But as I stated in the video, you can start on a bike like this, but is strongly believe it’s not sensible 😂. All beginner bike reviews with no ABS getting 1 point, it just what it is 🔥

@@edsmotomindsetyes but I don't agree with it. Its age isn't necessarily an issue regarding reliability. Parts are fairly easy to come by on eBay, Mad8VCycles, and a handful of other sites. Sure, it isn't an sv650 (loads of parts are available for those) but it's definitely not hard to find parts. Stator magnets are really the big downfall on these since they have a tendency to come loose. JB weld fixes that issue. You are correct though, this isn't a good beginner bike. More of an intermediate one. I bought the 1k after I rode the 650 for 2 years. Both bikes are great.

@@johnsuzuki6406 not entirely. I only needed it once haha. Once those damn magnets were glued back in, I haven't had a single problem. But I've also upgraded it to the hilt. All in, I've probably spent around $5k which includes buying the bike and having it repainted. It's freaking sick. But my KTM Super Duke would demolish this thing.

This is such a unreliable review.very strange standards and quite annoying with its arbitrary points selection.I’ve had an sv1000 for the last12 years and its not a beginner’s motorcycle.full stop.if you know your way round bikes its a big fun dare i say cuddly motorbike which nevertheless demands a bit of experience.I love my sv but of course its not everyone’s cup of tea. The sv 1000 falls into the much maligned “under rated bike” but for those who know(and you know who you are)its a lovely big hearted bike with no pretentions.a few faults but so much soul.👍🤛☠️👩‍🦳
