Ed "Big Daddy" Roth (March 4, 1932 - April 4, 2001) was an American artist, cartoonist, illustrator, pinstriper and custom car designer and builder who created the hot rod icon Rat Fink and other characters. Roth was a key figure in Southern California's Kustom Kulture and hot rod movement of the late 1950s and 1960s.
Roth is best known for his grotesque caricatures - typified by Rat Fink - depicting imaginary, out-sized monsters driving representations of the hot rods that he and his contemporaries built. Roth began airbrushing and selling "Weirdo" T-shirts at car shows and in the pages of Car Craft magazine as early as July 1958. By the August 1959 issue of Car Craft "Weirdo shirts" had become a full-blown craze with Roth at the forefront of the movement. The article featured Roth along with fellow Kustom Kulture pioneers Dean Jeffries and Pete Millar. Inspired by Roth and Barris Kustoms (whose shirts were airbrushed by Dean Jeffries), Detroit native Stanley Miller, a.k.a. "Stanley Mouse", began advertising his own shirts in the pages of Car Craft in January 1961. The lesser-known Rendina Studios of Detroit and Mad Mac of Cleveland also joined in on the monster "Weirdo" shirt craze, but Roth was certainly the person who widely popularized the "monsters in hot rods" art form.
In 1959 Roth created the Outlaw. This fiberglass Kustom hot rod was featured in the January 1960 issue of Car Craft. The car was covered in Car Craft and Rod and Custom, and appeared at custom car and hot rod shows. Other hot rods include the Beatnik Bandit (1961), the twin Ford engined Mysterion (1963), the Orbitron (1964), and the Road Agent (1965), among others.[3] In 1965, Roth's surf buggy, the Surfite, was featured in the film Beach Blanket Bingo starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, and also in Village of the Giants, featuring Beau Bridges and Tommy Kirk. One of Roth's personal drivers was a tangerine orange 1955 Chevy 2-door post with a Ford 406 cu. in. engine under the hood...he drove this car to his shop every day for years.
In 1962 the Revell model company began selling plastic models of Roth's cars and from 1963 to 1965 Revell also manufactured plastic models of many of Roth's monsters, including Rat Fink, Brother Rat Fink, Drag Nut, Mother's Worry, Mr. Gasser and other weird creatures created by Roth. Revell continues to re-issue Roth's Monsters and Kustom Car kits.[4]
In 1963 The Hawk Model Company issued its line of "Weird-Oh's" plastic models and Marx Toys issued Nutty Mads, both clearly inspired by Roth's work. Both items were quite popular in the mid-60s and remain sought after collector's items to this day. Hawk Models continues to re-issue its "Weird-Oh's" periodically.
Numerous artists were associated with Roth including artist David Mann, Rat Fink Comix artist R.K. Sloane, Steve Fiorilla who illustrated some of Roth's catalogs, and most notably, Ed Newton, who worked for Roth and designed several of his cars and T-shirt designs beginning in 1964, and Kustom Kulture icon Robert Williams who began working for Roth in late 1965.
Roth also built the first known VW powered trike.[3] Roth built many trikes for himself and others, including Candy Wagon, California Cruiser, Secret Weapon, Rubber Ducky and The Great Speckled Bird.[3]
In 1967 Roth built the Mega Cycle, Originally named by Robert Williams, "Captain Pepi's Motorcycle & Zeppelin Repair" was later changed to the "Mega Cycle" after a strong suggestion from car show promoters. Powered by a Buick V6 engine, Mega Cycle was designed to carry Ed's Harley XLCH. Later Ed felt that the XLCH just did not work and, through a series of trades, ended up with Bob Aquistapase's award-winning Triumph. The Mega Cycle is currently on display at Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh, NY.
In 1968 Mattel introduced Hot Wheels and Roth’s Beatnik Bandit was one of the first 16 die-cast toy cars produced by the company.

Those figures are soooooo fun to build, gotta love the Rat Fink! 👍👍👍
51:45 minutes of watching a master at work. Have no issues with that. Always something new to learn from you, and appreciate you passing on the knowledge you have gained over the years. A superb video from start to finish and the kit turned out amazing.
This is awesome! I used to build "Big Daddy's" models as a kid, along w/ Monogram customs and various Revell rods, drag cars, etc. back in the the early to late 70's. I believe i had well close to 40 built models at one time. Most got destroyed since we moved a few times back then, plus i think i was a little reckless as a kid. Still think about those days.
AwesOme ...Lov these Roth style characters ...😜✌️
Bleach-blond goon w/ the sun-bronzed hide! I love it!
awesome build once again 👍
Man I Love all these Rat Fink models. The weirdo's, all those to. My Father was friends with Ed (BIG DADDY) Roth many years ago. When I was a kid. He met him when my parents lived in California. Dad was a big Hot Rod guy to. Spent a lot of time watching him build cars and motorcycles His whole life. Lost my Dad last August, but still have the last car. He built. 1930 model A with a 400 mopar big block. Set up like a high boy. Had several of these original models in his room. Just takes me back. Was a very cool part of my Childhood. Thanks man. By the way. The finished product on this one. Looks Absolutely Fantastic. All the detail paint is outstanding. With your help, I hope to get my skills in that area tuned in as well. Thanks again. Looking forward to the next video.

I got back into it again about 2and1/2 years ago with my now 8 year old grand son. He can now follow the instructions and with a little help from pawpaw build by himself. We're still working on air brush skills. I'm so proud of him. Now we have to do his derby car for scouts I'll give him some help where needed. where going to have so much fun if my back allows. Hpiguys and Model car videos got me going again and I want to think them very much and my grandson thinks them very very much for getting me going again.

Great Job! I could tell you were enjoying yourself! Ed "Big Daddy" Roth certainly had a flair for Monsters!
Great build!

Very cool. I wish they would re-release the kit of the Banana Splits and their Buggies.
He looks really good!!!

Different but totally cool 👍🇦🇺
Awesome build as usual.Learn so much from watching your videos Chris
haha, this model is so cute reminds me of the time a jellyfish hitched a ride with me : )
Nicely done Chris, I loved all Roth's creations
EXTREME. AWSOME. RADICLE. DIFFERENT. Ed "Big Daddy" Roth thunk it and you done did it. Very impressive - OK, "Big Daddy" was my Company's radio call sign in the Army, back in 1968. Talent applied, even to insane kits, just makes them CRAZY GOOD.
Excellent tutorial of detail painting and dry brushing. You’ve done an excellent job on this one. Thanks for sharing.
I always enjoy these figure builds - they're simple to assemble, but the detail painting is what really makes them stand out and you've nailed yet another one here!
watching video on my 46th birthday and its 17F outside here in massachusetts
Amazing. Really amazing how you brought this kit to life. 👍
I love your paint job! This looks like a fun kit to build!
Great job mate👍
Great model, you did an awesome job 👍😊😎
real good work
Cool build Chris! I think that guy needs a Snickers. Lol
Having done a few of these kits and would like to share a tip. The monster mouths are hard to paint inside cuz the teeth get in the way. So clip off the the teeth with a nail clipper. Paint mouth interior. Later use the same teeth or make fresh from stretched sprue, (that plastic the parts come on). Glue teeth in place with 5 minute epoxy (I do not trust crazy glue) Paint the gums and teeth, done. Epoxy glue also makes a great gloss for the eyes. Cheers
Fantastic job Chris! I am definitely getting this one
Cowabunga dude! Great job 👍
Wow -19 below.....that's cold.🥶
i love this monsters fink
Chris, you really shine when you do figures. The Surfink looks great!!! Like the surf 🏄♂️ board! Sorry about your crabs, my the cold weather will take care of that😂. Keep up the great work!
Nice work! I wasn't interested in these figures until I watched you build this one. Now I may have to give it a try. Thanks for the inspiration!
NARLY!
He looks really good
Well done
Groovy!!!
Some reason I'm reminded of Chris Farley as Matt Foley...
REALLY not my kind of kit. But I'm sure that people who like that type of... Thing... will like to have a kit of it.
Wow, does that bring back memories. There was a similar kit with a figure and a great big V-8 engine that ran a propeller under the board. Do you remember that one? Never mind, I found you have a video review of it, Stroker McGurk. Have you built it? Also; is it just me, or does old Dinghead look like what you'd get if you shaved all the hair off of Gossamer from the Bugs Bunny cartoons? ;>)
Excellent job, l truly enjoy your work, what type of glue did you use
What brand of hoody knife and cutters do you use looking to upgrade mine soon and needing recommendations on a good brand
What was the glue with the brush that you used on this?
Are they all for sale???
Do you have a list of paint colors?
I'm an old guy now, so please don't be offended.
Don't get mad bud, but clean up and sand that surboard before you glue the fin in.
Hi. Big Fan! Please sell me this model you built! Please let me know. Thx
He looks really good !!!
