Ed "Big Daddy" Roth is the definition under KOOOLLLL.. Grew up admiring him and his creations. Got to meet the man one day years ago at a show. No one was getting his autographs and a friend of mine and I walked up and motioned, ok to come in? He motioned us to come on in. We spent the next 45 minutes talking to him and hearing his stories!! The man was awesome!!! Got a few autographs from him! Great man to meet and was and still is one of my idols!!! Long live the Fink Daddio!!!!

When I was 11yoa in 1967 my brother-in-law took me to a Custom Car Show in Des Moines Ia and Big Daddy Roth was there with the Beatnik Bandit and Rat Fink. I was a model building nut at that time so I was in heaven.

Well, I turn 63 in October - I graduated from high school the year after you were born - so I'm one of the old farcels who grew up with Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, George "The King of the Kustoms" Barris, Dean Jeffries and Von Dutch. When I was a boy in the '60s Ed Roth marketed a line of plastic figures (cast in colors not know to nature) based on his artwork, and I owned a couple of them. His bloodshot eyeballs featured in stuff I drew (hey, I was an adolescent boy!) when I was supposed to be listening to my teachers. I own a 1/18th scale die-cast model of his Beatnik Bandit, so yeah, you could say I am a fan. AMT's '59 El Camino is on my build list, and I'm thinking about putting at least one Rat Fink decal on it. I haven't bought any of the Ed Roth models currently in production, though I'm thinking about it. Back in the mid-'70s Revell sold a line of models based on Little John Buttera's customs. He was from a later generation than the aforementioned customizers, so his cars could be seen in any Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show. I built the '26 Model T sedan street rod around the time you were born. If you run across any of the Buttera models on e-bay, they are worth the time.

I stay in South Africa and since 1980 I used to get 5 to 8 Hotrod mags every month so that is where I learned to know about Big Daddy Ed Roth, von Dutch the pinstripe guy that created the eyeball picture, King of kustoms with a K George Barris, Tony Nancy and Lil John Buttera etc.

Oh, you’d have come across Big Daddy’s kits eventually. Revell released 7 other kits of his cars; the Mysterion, The Beatnik Bandit, The Surfite, Tweedy Pie, the Road Agent, Beatnik Bandit 2, and Tweedy Pie 2. Plus all of those MPC trikes Round 2 just released. I like you, Matt, I really do. So I’ma help you out before you damage your reputation even more. If you’ve never heard of him, look up Tom Daniels, then you’ll be ready for more stuff you may find at antique malls!

Matthew I came back to this video after watching the video you did with Luka Cee on his un-podcast. I saw your video where you announced the “big diddy Roth” model find when you put it out, I laughed when I heard that and thought someone in the YT world is gonna roast him for that….. this video however is awesome! Your honesty and genuine humbleness is encouraging. This whole thing reminds me of that part in the movie “The Sand Lot” where the guys asks Smalls do you mean Babe Ruth and he responds with who was she? They didn’t cast him out they had a sleep over to catch him up on a piece of history in their world of interest - baseball. You can see who the real characters are in the guys who give you a bit of a hard time but try to generally bring you up to speed on the subject instead of just bust you down.

For your own enjoyment of the hobby, check out the beginnings of hot rodding. Back in the late 50's early 60's, it was common to modify a model car before you began to cut up steel. Check out videos of the original Oakland Roaster Show, it will introduce you to some of the originators & the cars they built. Knowing where the hobby came from, can open your mind to where it is going. BTW, enjoyed your good natured reactions to the messages.

A few quick facts about Ed Roth, he reinvented T-shirts to become outer wear instead of underwear. He took a "New Material" of the day: fiberglass and used it as car body material over a hand sculpted buck to create one of a kind customs. One of his friends, was fellow pin striper Kenneth Howard aka. Von Dutch. There is much to learn about the "man" and he is a good read and there are books out there that feature his creativity and lifestyle. I think a suitable "punishment" would be for you to build and paint a Revell kit of Rat Fink, LoL Cheers Eh !

That's funny. I actually didn't know if you were joking or not when you said that. Now for fun you need to find an Ed Roth picture to hang in your shop next to the other signs. And there you go teasing me with your cheap Ollie's Gremlin models again. If I had an Ollie's up here I think I would check it out every week. Lol, those girls need love too, even if they're trying to poach your subscribers.

Don't feel bad Matt, I'm in my sixties and I only knew him from the model kits that were put out on his designs. Frankly , the kits never impressed me when I built them. Most of those guys you mentioned were all west coasters. It's doubtful many people on the eastern half of the US could tell you he or the others were. Enjoyed the laugh during my morning coffee. See you on the next one.

The only way I knew of Ed Roth was searching and finding certain models out there. I was surprised Matt when you said you had never heard of him. Seems like you would have run across him and his creations during your searches online for models. I see the comments....some same as me...sooner or later you would eventually have to come across Big Daddy Ed Roth. Some guys on here need to be tactful and courteous....don't show your ignorance to where it becomes offensive.

It all depends what circles you travel in. I only heard of Ed Roth in the last few years. I was building model kits in the 70s and maybe even the late 60s, and while I probably saw pictures of Rat Fink I don't think Ed Roth ever registered on my mind. I was building car kits, but had no other connection to car culture as such. I've never heard of Karl Kasper (sp?) either. I didn't know who Don Garlits is either, until I looked him up just now. Please nobody kill me.

Even I know of Roth and i am in the UK! :) have you heard of Richard Petty? I jest i am at a disadvantage when it comes to NASCAR... however i did watch it on Cable in the 90s... but mainly for the race start and the Guitar music..... i would look very Ignorant when it comes to UK builders and racers... some would find surprising how little I know about the UK classics.... one example of model car knowledge i did not know what Liberty Walk was? only a few month ago i looked that up.... Supercar and Japanese ricers would that Surprising i did not know! ... Steve Monty cool yes! great to see his build channel born and cool Harley he owns .

I'm 53 but even back in the day when models were sold at department stores I don't seem to remember seeing them on the shelves. But to be honest and fair I wasn't into old street rods & kustoms yet. I was into muscle car models and not old enough to appreciate those rods as the predecessors TO the musclecars I was so fond of.

I enjoy the history of kits videos you have done. I have a few in mind I'd like to do if I can ever get a workshop cleaned up enough to use it for anything other than storage, lol.
