SUPERCHARGED 1933 DUESENBERG | AMERICA'S MOST LUXURIOUS CAR

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#classiccars #luxurycars
In a time where the average yearly wage was only a few hundred dollars, a Duesenberg could cost upwards in the tens of thousands and were some of the most expensive cars in the world. Duesenbergs were also one of the most luxurious and powerful vehicles of its day. With a body built by Murphy of Pasadena, California and a 420 cubic inch supercharged engine delivering 400 horsepower, this car lived up to the saying that Duesenberg drivers get passed when they wish to get passed. Join our chief historian Leslie Kendall for a deep dive on the history and prestige of this 1933 Duesenberg SJ.

In another episode they said the factory manual said you can get quite good 10 or 13 miles per gallon. That's not bad at all considering the 5400 + lb weight and horsepower. A modern 5400 lb. truck or van with a 300 horsepower fuel-injected computer-controlled 6L with lock up converter and overdrive gets about the same mpg combined City and highway driving.

"It's a Doozy" was coined before the Duesenberg, but it fit so well that it became associated with the car. The Petersen's Duesenberg - the one Leslie is introducing here - is one of three the Petersen owned. They selected this one to retain, probably because it is such a representative example. Murphy coachworks in Pasadena bodied about half the Model J chassis, and this Murphy "Convertible Coupe" was the most popular style. It checks all the option boxes save one: hard trunk, rumble seat, dissapearing top, dual side mount spares with hard covers, twin spot lights, and Pilot Ray driving lamps that pivot with the front wheels to guide you 'round a corner. The only popular option it doesn't have is for the sporting owner: the door on the right side ahead of the rear fender for the golf bag compartment.

A truly gorgeous car..... and certainly "A Real Duesy!!" Just a slight point of correction: According to my College Classmate Jay Leno, who, as you probably know, owns two or maybe even three Duesenbergs, has said that all of the Model Js and even other models, were all produced in 1928.... but took several years to actually sell. So...... in whatever year a particular car was sold, that was listed as "The Manufacturing Year" when in fact it was "The Sold Year." You may cross reference Jay to confirm this statement. Thanks very much, and overall your presentation was exceptionally good. Bravo!! Ted Schempp, Nashville

Damn, I haven’t been to Peterson in years. It’s mainly the drive up the 405 fwy from Long Beach that stymies me. Traffic sucks! But the variety of cars is really mind blowing. Plus once there you got The La Brea tar pits is a couple blocks away plus … lots of other cool LA things to do and see. I’ll go again eventually.

Nobody measured from 02 60 back then, but a friend of mine with a 69 SS 396 El Camino raced one of these supercharged duesenbergs from a 30 mph roll up to 100 mph and they were dead even.
