    @@Teacher-T-Thailand You've picked some real plums of good aftermarket bike bikes in Thailand. I'm not a Royal Enfield owner, but knowing that cool bit exist would definitely be part of committing to buying an R.E. By the way, I think if RSTech did belt drive kits for Triumphs, they would possibly gain some market share (of course, there are other belt drive kits already available for Triumph, but somewhat pricey).

    I'm glad to find out about the belt drive system. That was the 1 thing that held me back from going "full tilt" in getting the meteor 650! Id go with the high ratio set-up to get the lower rpm's, better mpg & horsepower. I think I'll do the DNA high performance air filter system. The "touring" package is what clinches the choice for me. Now it's just the color I have to pick out for the .motorcycle!🏍️😁🤓👍 Doug, from the USA🇺🇸🦅

    Oily mess is a consideration for some, and the most common comment is on how smooth it is. From a USA rider - "The first thing I noticed was how much smoother it is in the on/off throttle moments, it's not as harsh in transition from being fully loaded to no load. Consequently, it has less effect on the frame attitude when entering corners." If cash is your only consideration, consider the long term cost of a belt VS that of a chain/sprocket set, including the labour and hassle to change 5 chain sets over the life of the belt. I would rather ride the bike, then work on it.

    Sadly not at the moment for the J series. The problem is that there is not enough room in the J series to fit that large front pulley. If you make it any smaller, then that would be too thigh a turn circle for the belt parameters and cause a short life on the belt. RSTech will not make because of this. Other companies are making, but I wouldn’t advise it because of the reason stated. 🙏

  • @MrTench8
    @MrTench83 ай бұрын

    The big problem with a belt final drive is tension. A chain can tolerate variations in tention far better than a belt. Each bike design will be different. The relationship between wheel centre, front sprocket centre, swing arm pivot position and amount of suspension travel all play a part in how much the tension will vary on each individual bike through the suspension travel either creating an enviroment that is belt friendly or not.

  • @Teacher-T-Thailand

    @Teacher-T-Thailand

    3 ай бұрын

    You are 100% correct. Which is why RSTech will not make or put their name to 350 J series belt kits. The tolerances don't add up for longevity of the belt. But the 650s all check ok. Not sure on the Shotgun yet. 🙏

Just back now after a 1700 km trip with cruise speeds at 120 kph, so the higher gearing is a plus for me. Given that our bikes are a lot lighter than a SM this higher ratio works well, but likely too high for the SM to pull, and more likely one would not like it that high

    When you say ‘stone catcher’ I take it you mean guard? A guard will stop stones getting but it also stops them getting out. Obviously a belt drive is not recommended for poor roads where stones are an issue. Hence why dirt bikes never use a belt drive. 🙏

  • @robertstraghan9009

    @robertstraghan9009

    4 ай бұрын

    "Stone catcher" is aptly put. Like a stock Enfield, my old Harley guard was L shaped, and open on the back side. Unless the guard is fully enclosed (impossible with an endless belt unless a 2 piece guard) the guard can "catch" a stone, trapping it in the guard, increasing any potential risk. This is why myself, and others remove the guard in the hope that any rock will get flung out. So is the guard to keep out rocks, or a mandated safety regulation to keep out fingers and bits of clothing?

    Interesting project even though there are already many belt drive options available for Super Meteor 650 in India but they aren't specially tailored made for super meteor so there are some minor errors like gears being a little large and belts to be less durable compared to chains so when your project is completed down please do the extreme durable test of belt and it's gears for extreme conditions and then gave us report of how much longer your belt drive lasted maybe Indians would order it if they find it durable enough to run on crazy Indian roads.

    Proper engineering, quality components, a quality Gates belt, proper belt alignment, and tension are all critical to long term life and reliability. Belt drive is a well proven idea on motorcycles, and Harleys have been using a belt since 1985, over literally millions of km. This is the same system as used in stock OEM fitment on Indian, Buell, Kawasaki, BMW, Suzuki, Triumph, and Yamaha motorcycles; not to mention Gates who invented the drive belt and used in industrial applications under very harsh conditions. I am not the only one to have put 160,000 on an older design Harley belt.....................

  • @Teacher-T-Thailand

    @Teacher-T-Thailand

    2 ай бұрын

    Long life with minimal maintenance are two of the belt drive advantages: Many riders report putting 160,000 on a Harley belt - a much heavier bike with far greater torque than a tuned Interceptor at 50 Nm Gates say 5-8 times the life of a chain and sprocket set, which bears out this experience. The Gates carbon fiber belt does not stretch like a chain, nor wear at the links, so as one might imagine, maintenance is very minimal. Noteworthy is that the HD maintenance intervals only go to 80,000 km, and specified as "inspect and adjust" only. Other OEM brands using a belt drive have similar statements, however a prudent Rider would keep an eye on belt tension as part of regular pre-ride checks.

    The belt is an endless loop, so no way to get it around the swingarm, without removing it. The biggest part of the job is removing the rear wheel, and dropping the swingarm only adds about 10-15 min to what would be a chain set change. At 70 I can do the belt upgrade in 2 hours. Teacher T's Super Meteor chain, was an endless loop as well, although some SM are reported to have a link.

    Sadly there are copy belts and small tight turn pulleys being fitted to bikes in India. Then belts snap and give the whole system a bad name. This is the same type of belts fitted to HD and they have much more torc. Mud and stoney roads can be a problem. Good tarmac roads no problem.

    Both belt alignment, and tension is important to life and reliability. Harleys have been using a belt since 1985, over literally millions and millions of km under all conditions, so a well proven concept for a road bike. A belt is stock OEM fitment on Indian, Buell, Kawasaki, BMW, Suzuki, Triumph, Zero, and Yamaha; not to mention Gates who invented the drive belt and used in industrial applications under very harsh conditions. I am not the only one to have put 100,000 miles (160K km) on a Harley belt, and on another Harley I pumped 121 Hp and 141 Nm of torque for about 40,000 km until I sold it. A much heavier bike with far greater torque than a tuned Interceptor at 50 Nm on a belt that is 30% stronger. Gates claim that this carbon fiber tensile cord belt is stronger than a NEW chain. Whether you believe that or not does not matter, as an Interceptor simply does not have sufficient torque. Also give some thought to how a chain wears at the links and where any potential failure point will be. A belt does not have such a wear issue.

    The statement that belts are not as efficient as a chain is not true with these Gen 4 curvilinear toothed belts. From the Gates Engineering manual: “PolyChain® GT® Carbon® belt drive efficiency will be as high as 98%. This high efficiency is primarily due to the positive, no slip characteristic of synchronous belts. Since the belt has a thin profile, it flexes easily, thus resulting thus resulting in low hysteresis losses as evidenced by low heat buildup in the belt." and "Chain drives running unlubricated may generate significant heat buildup due to increased friction in the roller joints. Even properly lubricated chains running at higher speeds tend to throw off the oil due to centrifugal forces, making it difficult to maintain proper lubrication at the load bearing. " Consequently, chain drives are typically only 92-98% efficient." While there is lots of Gates marketing fluff out there, the Gates manual I referred to is an engineering design manual rather than propaganda. The "elsewhere" references I can find are either KZreadrs with questionable engineering credentials, compaqrison with bicycles, or general statements about belts or V-belts, and not specifically about these Gen 4 belts. @@Teacher-T-Thailand I haven’t a clue as I sold my Classic 500 and replaced it with a Guzzi V7 850. It was a good conversion too (front sprockets were different between 350 and 500 models) but it looks like Bandidospitstop no longer sell the Legundary kit. The chap that bought my Classic 500 seemed very pleased with it.

    Absolutely wrong. A chain get lubricated direct after a ride if the chain is warm. So the lubricate can go in to the chain where it sould be and can cool down with the chain together and is ready for your next ride in the morning. If you spray it on a cold chain in the morning and than you start to ride away, your lubricate is everywhere on your bike and on the street but not inside your chain.

    Each to Thier own. You solution is a good one, but after washing my bike, if I don't oil straight away the OEM chain will rust. Obviously after washing it is cool.

    @@Teacher-T-Thailand After I washed my bike, I ride the bike for 15 to 20 Kilometers so the water is out of the chain and the chain is warm. Than i lubricate the chain because the oil can go much better in to the chain parts. The way you do ist, let the oil just sitting on the outside of the chain and if you ride your bike, the Oil flung of the chain and is every where but not where it should be. But yes... each to their own. I like to lubricate my chain while you lubricate the street.

    The price? Where to get? The benefits? As far as we are aware, this is the first belt drive kit available for the Meteor 650.
