Sun Ra Arkestra's 99-year-old director says musical inspiration keeps him energized
Marshall Allen joined Sun Ra's experimental jazz group in the 1950s. Recently, the Germantown resident celebrated his 99th birthday with a sold out tour.

100. This planet needs people like this. Glad he ain't been rushin' nowhere.
I find this video interesting because I'm 69 now and I already had a mild stroke. I quit playing guitar for over 10 years, but decided to resume that hobby as therapy for the aftermath of said stroke. This man is an inspiration to me.

yes it's amazing
I wish I lived next to an old legend like this just to listen to 90 years of stories and chat about life in general. If their mind is still there in their 90's the wisdom can be unparalleled. They have a story about everything and it's always interesting to hear. Especially ones that lived a life in the arts.
"I was so wrapped up in music and trying to build something, that i didn´t have the time to be out there destroying myself"
Someone needs to capture as many stories and musical ideals from this man as possible before he joins Sun Ra, so interesting and a wealth of knowledge. 99 and still going strong keep it up Mr. Allen.
Fascinating to see the interior of the Morton Street house.
Brought tears to my eyes. Sun Ra and his band hold a special place in my heart.
What an amazing and inspiring person. Sun Ra is still ahead for his time,in fact his music is outside of time.
People from this era were just built different... so much LOVE
good to see strong spirits at 99. I saw him at the Old Waldorf twice . Once in 1980 and 1981 . I was 29 years old .
We are so blessed to still have this man with us. No better proof that music keeps you young!
i identify so much with "then the years go by and years go by and next thing i know i'm 99..." i'm 44, and honestly, don't know how it happened! you get past about 29, and suddenly-oh shit! life is both long and short at the same time.
Saw them perform numerous times in Philly. Bought my first Sun Ra album in Philadelphia in 1973/74: Space Is the Place. A late sister-friend from Philly, Evelyn Smart, used to dance and sing with the Arkestra.
Saw them at Jordan Hall Boston 1977 when I was at NEC. We had this bud we saved for the event that we called the "RA" bud.
Got to see him live. Easily one of the best concerts I've ever attended.
Sun Ra was divinely inspired.
I got to sit next to him and share a meal about 16 or 17 years ago, backstage at some Belgian festival. I wish I could say it was more eventful than it was, but for me it was a huge moment, even just sharing dry sandwiches and a few laughs.

So it doesnt actually matter who it was, a human that was friendly (probably some that were much more friendlier in your life that you see as a less huge moment, or forgot about it even) was what he was at that moment. Says a lot about western idol worship tendencies vs the appreciating good human beings without having to know their status (in which genre context that may be in)

@@Stoney-Jacksman Seems like nothing matters if you look at from that perpective. What's wrong about admiring someone, seeing someone as an inspiration or even being a little starstruck? Being friendly to each other is one thing. But you can still be inspired by someone's charisma or (creative) work that someone made. Why couldn't that be a part of a great moment for someone else?

Thanks for the update When was his birthday
This is cool af. I don't know anything about Sun Ra or Arkestra, but was going crazy listening to all their different albums on YT back when I discovered them.
I saw him about 15 years ago in a club called twins in Washington DC. It was a great show, I remember he was wearing a t shirt that said space is the place
This legend was born in 1924! 6 years after WW1 ended. And he enlisted with the Buffalo Soldiers in WW2. What a man. What a life!
Happy 100 years on the planet belated greetings of May 25th planetary revoluting day & many more revolutions!
that's lovely stuff there. I've had the good fortune of seeing & hearing the maestro marshall allen play live. I even got to meet & speak with him a bit. (I work at a hotel, & it's a short ways away from a spot they were playing at. so he & the band stayed at my work on that trip.) as you can tell from this short bit here, he's a really warm spirited man. the last couple times the . arkestra came to town, marshall didn't travel with them. so, I feel really fortunate to have been able to see & hear him, & to get that extra added chance to speak with him.
I'm 26 and discovered Sun Ra on vinyl. Incredible sounds and tones. Thank you for bringing us enlightenment and joy smooth as a neat glass of Johnny Walker Red.
Tastey!!!! Jam'n on the edge where jazz is flown and known and blown. Keyman play'n raindrops no waste but lots of splash. Strings dancing, pitter pat'n, wet boots. Like it.
You're awesome big brother. You give great inspiration. Thank you sir.
99 years ❤ congratulations 🙏🏾 amazing ❤️
I got to see him play with the Sun Ra Arkestra at Union Transfer for his 100th birthday. What an honor to be there!
An amazing career, an amazing truly original artist, and this man got to be a part. This was/is the true music of the universe... IK'm 82 and play as many gigs as I'm offered, hope to be able to keep on riding the music train.
Best for the years ahead dear Marshall....x

Standing ovation.
Wow!!
I saw the Arkestra in Hollywood, at Club Lingerie, 1986, I think. 😅 I talked to Sonny by phone, about a year or so, earlier. Great times.

Saw The Arkrastra last month in San Francisco. Thank you Marshall for so much music.
Blessed love every year honorable elder brother.
Its amazing how uea hes aged but hes standing up right and absolutely his mind is still completely intact hes quick still the way hes talking not many people like that let alone still touring its incredible music has kept him young, music is so powerful
Saw the band in '77, I think. Fun gig. 👍🏻
Funky old, lived-in, house, every piece of peeling paint probably has a story to tell!
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Legend.
I was lucky enough to see Marshall Allen perform in Buffalo once.
Happy belated birthday! This guy is an inspiration.
Great video 📹 Rip 🙏🏽 🕊 Sun Ra. My uncle Eric Walker played drums 🥁 in the Orchestra also may he Rip 🙏🏽 🕊 Hbd 🎂 bro
What a legend.
Healing sounds of music
this need to be an hour or two at least, what a talent, what a band, what a history.
So nice to see a flyer on the wall for a performance at UConn in the late 90s (or early 2000s). It was booked by my dear friend Richard Segan (RIP) who was a close friend of the band’s and played their music every week on WHUS for decades.
I saw them in the UK on the 70's ..a fabulous experience ..all the musicians had gold head bands with flashing LED's going from right to left and back ..they also had some prototype synth horns which were stunning at the time ..way ahead of their time
That house is awesome.
Maybe the best show I’ve ever been to was Marshall leading the Arkestra… I think… yeah, it had to be, idk what would have been better. I really need to go up and see them again soon.
I mostly use back fulcrum after learning a bit about Tony Williams. I have become very relaxed doing it. I like the connection to the wrist movement but the back also feels best in conjunction with overall body movement. Although the thumb sometimes controls the bounce it isn't on the stick. It did take a lot longer to get used to back grip than the others but it is worth it. Great subject. Thanks
Massive respect to this man/artist!
A real icon.
My go to lately in Sun Ra's version of " On the Sunny Side of Street". Helps coping in tough times. Many of his albums present like audio story books.
This is amazing
Wow. Life goals. This man is a hero.

He was one of the pre-baby boomer "proto hippies" or beatnik generation who were already mature adult alternative lifestyle rebels when the late 1960s revolution hit. Very few of them left obviously.
