I saw them perform & take me on board for quite a mind blowing trip of a show in the 80's .... I remember some people got up and walked up when they were just warming the engine up before they even took off. I was so glad they were gone so the rest of us could get going with them. Changed my relation to music & art in general. Thanks Mr. Mystery. RIP

I am 25 years young, I am into music heavy. Just came across Sun Ra on an instagram post. I would like to say this guy is genius. The first few mins of this docu I almost closed it out, I am 45 mins in! keep watching you people. A lot of good things to take out from this. I am a singer, not trained. I know it is in my DNA, this docu made me realize I can do anything. I believe in myself. -Jackie G

I remember when I first experienced Sun ra on a television show, and I used to watch him regularly. It was back when he was still alive in this dimension. Sun ra helped me to understand music as a cosmic phenomena and an expression of the Soul. I had friends that wondered why I listened to this and watched this and they said that the music was just noise but they couldn't hear it, they were unable to understand it.

Sun Ra, his personality, his music is an inspiration. His music is unique which brings cosmic energy to jazz music 🎼. So many funk groups in the 70’s were inspired by sun ra, you can tell by their costumes and some of their sounds. Sun Ra Akestra is the greatest jazz band ever and I will always follow his music

"If teenagers are lost, it's because they have been fed upon the word Freedom, instead of the word Discipline" - Sun Ra. At least 'discipline' has something more concrete and self-realising about it, unlike the nebulous 'freedoms' of the last many decades, which seem to go on endlessly and cause more harm than good by a large margin. Mainly because no one ever seems to be 'free' enough. At least these days. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I just remember being young and feeling the same way that's all. I wasn't trying to upset anyone, but recently turning 50 has shown me a few things - that there's sometimes more to life than chasing 'freedoms' . Not all the time, but here in the more 'developed' countries. I think people really need purpose to lead a fulfilled life, which requires discipline of some sort. Sun Ra's philosophy seems really great, I never knew!

  • @Anthropomorphic

@@ohraisins Freedom is nebulous, but so is discipline. For better or worse, both can be applied to anything. Discipline can be self-realizing, but mainly in combination with freedom - specifically, self-realization through discipline presumes the freedom to pursue your own interests rather than someone else's. Something similar to the inverse can be said as well: freedom doesn't count for much if it can't be used, and discipline will help you do that.

  • @ohraisins

@@Anthropomorphic Yes very true! My personal definition of discipline is that it's generally a good thing, but it can be anything you put your mind too, beneficial or nefarious. And then only if you have the freedom to pursue it, like you said. Very educational comments section. :-)

I think thats what he tried to convey. Everytime I think I've figured out a part of him, I come across a counter intuitive point from him. And I remember him saying that people cant keep up with him because he moves in different directions, which has its meaning musically but I take it as him existing as a conundrum, or a contradiction. Because thats the only continuity I can find in the way he did things, and I think there are lots of things in life that exist that way too.

Real freedom and meaningful discipline are the same thing, IMHO, for freedom that subtracts from self or others destroys more freedom than it gives. And, yes, cultures that focus on stories do have superior discipline. The Inuit don't raise their voice or their hand against a child, they tell them stories. And it works. So, do they have more freedom? In general, yes. Not always, but in general. So Sun Ra does touch on some core ideas that psychology is now exploring. He wasn't an alien, he was probably schizophrenic, but so was John Nash. I would argue that, like Nash, he observed something that was fundamentally correct. Incomplete, perhaps, but I doubt any reputable social scientist or anthropologist would dispute the underlying ideas.

Every time that I saw Sun Ra and the Arkestra, (rather than 'his' Arkestra, just as it should be Captain Beefheart and THE Magic Band) John Gilmour's solos were always the highlight. And I only got to see him relatively late on in his career; I can only imagine what he was like in the 1960s and 70s.

What I ultimately love about the Arkestra is that none of 'em give a hoot about being 'cool' or potentially looking 'uncool' A Joyful Noise just about sums it up.

Sun Ra DOCUMENTARY 1558pm 30.1.22 the house of god. there's a dhss dance remix which seems to suggest they used a sun ra sample... of him, sun ra, speaking - akin to some televisual preacher.. it might not have been him.... i think.. it could have been him.... and if you had beefheart and sun ra on the same bill you'd be sure to have a weird time if not an eventful one... p.s well if he's the sun rise and sun set then i'm a big storm coming to blast the cobwebs out the dusty ceiling... and maybe the roof off!!!!!!!
