Summer Challenge records: 400m Hurdles in 21,43 s | WR

Ойындар

In 1992, Accolade/MindSpan released a sequel to a well-known, but infamous for its bugs (oh, the speed skating...) game called The Games: Winter Challenge. I used to play that game quite a lot (mainly ski jumping : ) and I couldn't get good enough at it, so I decided I'll try my hand at the Summer Challenge.
Looks like it worked : )
Here's the first of eight competitions, 400 m Hurdles. Here what counts mostly is not even the constant enter spam (make sure you have an auto-fire enter key!), but an IDEAL reaction to the starter's shot (save state could help here), pressing jump (space) as short as possible, timing close jumps to be as far away from each other as possible and... some wild luck. Looks like mostly all of the time the best result that can be achieved is 21:50 (one game frame less than this score), so I can call this (very) lucky. Suffice to say, I don't believe this score can be improved, perhaps not even on tool-assisted level! (using frame advance/input inject/multiple save states etc.). As you can guess, this one was easily the toughest to achieve.
Also, it's a WR draw with Pau A.R., his record is here: • Video (skip to 1:39 as somehow time stamp doesn't work)
Done under the polish flag, like every other WR I'll submit : )
Stay tuned for more! : )
Curiosity: the real-life world record for this competition is one of the oldest ones achieved (dating back to 06.08.1992 ; the game was released in this year ; ) and it's... 46,78 s : ) That means the computer record is more than twice faster than this, having an AVERAGE run speed of 67+ km/h : D

Congrats on WR! Is this game run by a lot of people? Also how long have you been running this game for?

Hey man, thank you! : ) I don't suppose so, not at this point of time, could risk saying it's quite niche. Can't say this is running (even if it's literally running ; ), too... more like record-making. And this competition (along with a few others ; I'll make to sure to update the description) is not even possible without using an auto-fire enter key, since the time actually depends heavily on how fast you press it. Save states help a lot, too (especially with the starter), but aren't necessary. As for how long I've been playing... well, most of the DOS games I've known for years, from my childhood time, so you could say decades, but then again it wasn't such a long time playing, as you may guess : ) I got back to optimizing some of the games I know to close perfection, and this is one of the results : )

PLANET23K so here's an interesting question. Which do you like more? Speedruning a game that a lot of people play and trying to perfect someone else's route for the game or play a game not run by many other people and come up with your own route/strategies

A good question! Here's the answer: Both! As long as I enjoy it.. : ) I recommend to do the same ; possibly with everything in life (and while it's not fully possible, it's not a bad aim at all). Care for yourself, build yourself strong, _then_ care for others. Rest assured this order is more than sensible. As for speedrunning F1 now, to be honest, I'm mostly fighting with myself when it comes to routing, although there are small route inputs from others, too. There's a (major) breakthrough I've discovered, and it's coming up whenever I feel recording something optimized enough... "good" optimization just won't do. Generally, probably think in 4:2x category.. ; ) Alas, this isn't that enjoyable, probably a "pleasureable torture" would be a good comparison at that level. The final relief will be probably worth it, tho ; ) What I DO enjoy tho, is helping people and sharing the strategies, so I'll be making a tutorial for F1 speedrunning so people will know mostly everything, from the very setup to the ending, almost all details will be presented nicely : ) It's coming WID/when it's done, tho ; )

PLANET23K makes sense. I was just wondering because I've only been speedruning games for about a year. When I started out I played classics like Portal 1, then learned Fallout 1 and not too long ago learned the Dishonored 1 speedrun. All of those have quite a lot of runners so there are very advanced strats people have come up with. Currently though I'm trying to get WR in Dead Rising 4 which has only been run by like 3 people so I'm pretty much makeing up my own routes. It's a nice change of pace and I find it a fun new way to speedrun so I was curious as to how you thought about that.

The general rule for running is: run the games you love/like (since it's kind of tough to have any passion for what you don't feel), but taking in the risk that you may start to hate the game afterwards ; ) ...or, not be able to play normally or even at all. Speedrunning games that aren't that optimized, especially with a WR mindset from more 'advanced'/competetive ones, will lead to many a route/path ideas, and generally destroying the game, in both good and bad ways : ) But yes, for me running QfG1VGA was this kind of relief, I know it's not that optimized, but I don't have so much pressure on it. That could be an actual answer to your question : ) And if you have the possibility to think outside of the box in anything you do, that's great. Speedrunning kind of teaches that... ; )
