Subway Plus Bass Preamp Review - Very Detailed for Potential Buyers

Музыка

This is a very detailed review of the Mesa Subway+ Bass DI/Preamp. In addition to sound examples, I try to give you as much information that you may need in order to make a buying decision.
My audio path used in the video is bass to Mesa Subway+ to SSL 2+ (non-4K mode for those wondering) to Presonus StudioOne (no plugins, post processing or mastering tools used - just raw recording of bass).
The Subway+ features a Hi Pass Filter. I make reference in the video to another video I did about why you should use a high pass filter - here is that video: • Using a Hi Pass Filter
The 80's style synth tune that I riff over in order to demonstrate the sound of the Subway+ is a song I wrote, copyright Brent Haeseker 2021. It's not your typical backing track for a bass preamp review, but hey, I wanted to be different.

I have both versions of this di/preamp and I actually prefer the standard model. It takes up less space on the pedalboard, has fewer knobs and so more room and has an active/passive switch, which is great for basses with different output levels. I don’t generally need the hi-pass filter or the extra mid frequency controls and boost etc. Bottom line, however, is that they’re both great for tone and response. You can’t go wrong with either of these units.

Great video of the Mesa!! I'm still deciding between this and the regular subway di. To be perfectly frank, the plus does have way more features but many of them I'm not going to use. I can't use the loop with my pedals due to them being line level, I'm not sure if I'll be able to reach the mute/boost switches and I usually set the eq flat. The only big advantage I see over the standard subway is the HPF.

Regarding the battery, if the OneSpot or other power supply is plugged into the back of the Subway DI-regardless of whether the power is turned on-the battery is disconnected, and you can leave the bass or other pedals plugged into the input. I have several pedals that work in this manner.

Thank you! Formal instruction on piano, self taught on bass. Mostly learned by having to record bass lines in the studio for songs I wrote on keys. At least that's how it started.

I tried to keep it lower in the mix so you could hear it well but still had some context for how it sounded in a mix. However, a good point you make - I'll see about including more solo'd parts in the demonstration.
