MesaBoogie Subway Bass DI Preamp - Demo and Sound Clips

Ойын-сауық

the Mesa Subway Bass DI is an awesome little bass preamp. It has a clean but warm tone and very well thought out and responsive controls and outputs.
I pulled out my favourite bass, my Fodera Monarch Deluxe, to test it out and explore the tonal options.
It sounds awesome plugged straight into a powered wedge for live use, and instantly good plugged straight into a desk or converter in the studio. To me it has some of the sound of an amp, but also with the clarity of a direct signal.
It's a very well thought out, well made and handy piece of equipment.
Big thumbs up again for Mesa Boogie!
It is available Australia wide from Guitar World Nerang

As a seasoned guitarist, I am quite ignorant when it comes to the BASS platform, but I am slowly learning. Your presentation of the this MESA preamp, the QSC speaker reference and your excellent playing skills have been a big help. Thanks for taking the time to post your video.

Thanks for putting out a great demo showing the diversity of sound this model can create. This is the kind of demo I'm looking for when researching pedals.

While I disagree with your opinion of what constitutes a Stuart Zender tone, I must say that this has been a super informative and enjoyable demonstration of the Mesa Subway DI. Thank you for your work!

Really nice job, Rob. I think it would look/sound great on my all-black pedal board. Good sales pitch! The variable DI out is one of the best features. Pushing the low mid was way sweet compared to the high mid. That was probably the only point where the tone was not to my taste. A lot of reviews of DI/EQ pedals focus on the distortion/OD aspects ahead of the tone shaping. As you said, you're starting with a great bass tone though we never heard it on its own as a point of reference. I guess, the last nitpick would be that I'm into subtractive EQ and would probably start by cutting that high mid a bit and playing with the voice knob from there as the main flavor. Subscribed.

Nice review, Rob. Boogie fan myself. Best DI, IMHO, Mesa-Boogie WalkAbout. Tube preamp, tube driven power amp. DI uses both the pre and power sections. Just out of production. Get 'em before they're gone.

Great demo man. Ok soooo......I just got the Darkglass Alpha Omicron pedal. What i'm wanting to do is get a cleaner DI preamp and record the clean sounds of say the Mesa and the gritty tone of the Alpha and blend them together. I could do that with this correct? I'm guessing by using the D.I. out on the back and then hooking up the Alpha somehow haha through the Mesa and into my interface? Kinda confusing for me but just trying to wrap my head around this before a make a purchase. I love the Alpha for it's grit but I also want a cleaner tone as well and it has a blend knob but still I want a cleaner low end and grittier top for recording heavier styles. Thanks :)

I have the Aguilar DI and based on your examples, the Boogie is clearer, and more solid sounding. The Aguilar has a warmer sound, more colored. I like the sound of both, but at this time, I am very interested in getting the Boogie as well. I like your Focal Twins which I have as well. Is that a 737 in your rack? How does it compare?

Yeah i'm really happy with the Mesa DI. I think it's great to have a couple of options for sure. And yeah the twins are great speakers. I actually got rid of the 737 and bought two BAE neve 1073 preamps. they have DI inputs as well, and I like that Neve colour as a bass DI much better than the avalon. However even just the Mesa pedal plugged straight into the converters, as I did in the review, is a much better bass tone than using the Avalon 737 as a DI.

Agreed. No bass player has ever been fired from a band for playing the roots as long as he holds the groove.
