    Ivan, I have made a living touring and performing the globe with various artists and seen many shops of gear and the people working in them??. I can not say I have seen a more straight to the point, basic, explains it all review in quite awhile. thank you for that, and god speed, Doosie Ward.

    Awesome review and demo! I was worried about having trouble controlling my tone switching between AGS and clean because it seemed like the gain knob was going to have too much effect on the clean signal, but you cleared that up at the end by reminding me that using the gain and master in tandem I can still get a gainy-er OD without needing to have a super loud or gainy clean signal. This thing looks better every time I see it. Thanks again!

    I use my Aguilar TLC compressor as a boost when I’m not using the AGS circuitry. And then when I turn on the AGS circuitry, I turn off the compressor so that I can use it when playing live and switch back-and-forth at will without any change and volume. Something to think about.

    That DI sounds really nice! Great functionality with the AGS foot switch that enables you to switch character of the sound from one song to the next without having to fiddle with the knobs on the board! 👍 How is the sound quality? I'm specifically thinking about noise from the pedal? Does the AGS switched on produce a lot of background noise? And finally - is the circuitry all analog? Great review - keep it up! 😊❤️👍🎸

  • @IvanBassist

    @IvanBassist

    3 жыл бұрын

    It’s all analog, as far as I know. It’s a great sounding DI. The noise floor is pretty low. If you really crank the AGS you will get noise, just like with any drive pedal or pushed amplifier, but i wouldn’t worry too much about it if you just use a bit of break up to thicken up your sound. Thanks for watching!

    Dumb question but off does it send a clean just d.I. sound to the board..then engaged give you like tone 2 etc.. So for example.if.you ran into your amp and the pedal bi passed the di tone would be front of the house then.when you kick it in that other tones as well.

  • @IvanBassist

    @IvanBassist

    4 жыл бұрын

    Not a dumb question at all. I don’t have the pedal with me at the moment, but if i remember correctly if you bypass the pedal the DI will still work but it will feed an uncolored signal and if you turn on the pedal it will apply the EQ (if you set it to post EQ) If you want to switch like that you might want to spend some time dialing in the exact same volume tho

  • @IvanBassist

    @IvanBassist

    3 жыл бұрын

    They’re both great and offer a different character. What I like about the Mesa one is that you can turn the knobs all the way up if you want (the bass for example) and still you can get a usable sound. I believe the Tonehammer has like a +20db boost on the bass, which is crazy.

    Hola Ivan, buen video, gracias! Tengo una duda grande. El que compra un preamp (este por ejemplo) apunta a siempre tocar conectado siempre directo a línea? cómo encaja este preamp con un cabezal y un gabinete? tiene sentido tener este preamp y luego comprar un cabezal y un gabinete? o es que ambas cosas son de uso excluyente y el preamp es para tocar en vivo y grabar mientras que el amplificador es para casos particulares o más domésticos? Un saludo desde Perú.

  • @IvanBassist

    @IvanBassist

    Hola Felipe, Un preamp asi tiene muchos usos. Como dices tu, se puede usar para ir directo a la consola. Con eso puedes evitar usar un ampli y tocar solo con la señal directa. Sin embargo, tambien se puede combinar con un ampli+gabinete. 1)Puedes conectar el preamp en el loop del ampli y asi tienes la EQ del pedal en el ampli 2) puedes usar la EQ del preamp para complementar el sonido de tu ampli 3) lo puedes usar solo para ciertas canciones/secciones. Como un boost o por ejemplo para hacer slap o cambiar entre dedos y uña

    Thanks for the video. Beginners question. Am I right in thinking I can take this pedal and put it through a 500w amp and get tone hammer sound just like the tone hammer 500 amp?

  • @IvanBassist

    @IvanBassist

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey there! Not 100% but you can get pretty close depending on the amp. (Your cabinet also plays an important role as far as tone goes, btw). If your amp has a loop (send/return) on the back, you can plug the tone hammer “out” to the “return” input of the bass, thus bypassing the amp’s preamp/EQ. Then you will only be using the EQ on the aguilar and just the master volume on the amp. That will get you the closest. You can also just plug it in front of the amp and get similar results but with a bit more coloration from your amps preamp section

    Is the preamp the same as the ones in the Tonehammer amps, from a DI perspective? I heard the DI from a Tonehammer 700 being recorded and it sounded fantastic. Would I get the same DI tone from this unit? Or does some of the power/sound from the amplifier also go to the DI outputs? In other words to get that sound could I just get this unit or would I need to purchase the 700?

    Awesome channel Ivan! Enjoyed your Cali76 review and settings videos. This too is a great demo, of (to my ears at least) a terrible sounding preamp! Clearly not your fault! Not everyone will want a high gain Dark Glass pedal on their board, but when I compare what I am hearing here to smth like Sans Amp or Ampeg DIs, the difference is huge! I am a big fan of other Aguilar pedals, and especially adore and highly recommend the Octamizer... But this one... yikes! Cheers!

    I actually came to this after seeing someone say they swapped their Ampeg Scrambler DI for it because the Scrambler was too scooped for live use, I assume it's the kind of thing that sounds trebly and shite on its own but hits just right when there's a whole mix smearing out the bad frequencies.

    4:55 when you turn MID REQ all the way up while everything else (MID LEVEL in particular) is at 12 o'clock shows your lack of knowledge about how the pedal works. If MID LEVEL is at 12 it doesn't cut nor boost any mids, it's neutral. So what is the point of selecting ANY frequenci wth MID FREQ? In such setting MID FREQ does absolutely nothing. Every reviewer i have seen that does real time changes to show the functions is guily of this. And not only on this pedal but every pedal that has frequency selector
