Holy hell!! My 02 bugeye has almost 400K on it and has nowhere even close to as much rust as this does. And I am in the salt belt!!

Wild eh! My bug is at 570k and also not even close to this bad. Definitely makes a huge difference with those frequent washes to keep the road salt off them and also under oiling

No worries, in the front the engine took care of that 😂. Replaced the oil-gallery cover behind the flywheel, the oil pan gasket and the turbo oil return, now it's only the valve cover gaskets that keep the front chassis oiled up.😄@@TheSubieSanctuary

I do this yearly on my winter subaru’s. Remove skirts and fender liners, then get it oiled underneath and in panels. Like krown or rust check or fluid film. You could get next level and remove interior carpet and spray that as well. Doing under the carpet is something you only have to do once. It then stops any salty water brought from your shoes/boots from just soaking into carpet and floor pan

@@mynamisis i used specifically designed products to do it. They will stay in place better then old motor oil. Krown, rustcheck, fluid film to name a few, these are available in spray cans or bulk fluid to spray with a gun

How can it get this bad. Is salted road really capable of this destruction?

Yes sir! Salt is a mega killer here. If the cars arnt oiled underneath early on they maybe last 10 years. At least japanese and domestic cars. Euro’s do a little better due to galvanizing

You’re like Subaru wizards. Poof a car and an half stripped clean in 10 minutes…. If only it were that easy. I have the rotten WRX and the much less rotten 2.5i sedan. No time to swap

Oh hey that's about as bad as my foz was when i started haha definitely not economical to fix the shell unless it has sentimental value etc (and even then, not worth it from $$ point of view ofc) i hate our climate/rust so damn much :( krown or fluid film is basically mandatory from my experience, i cut the rear unibody rails out of a junkyard SF to graft into my car and even though the towers were rotten on it, because it (the junkyard car)had been krown'd every year the rails and underside of the trunk floor was *mint* - still had all the factory primer even except where stuff was bolted on and the oil hadn't crept enough. I think the other big killer is gravel roads + not washing underneath thoroughly enough (especially for the rust under the rear seat above the tank); super-fine gravel dust plus the next winter's salty slush water basically makes glued-on salty wet mud that never fully dries and is in all the nooks and crannies you don't want it to be in. my old Outback was so much cleaner than the current foz at the same mileage, and the only difference is the foz spent much of its life in rural Quebec on gravel roads

Exactly! You know your rust dynamics well. Ive been in same boat with my previously rusty bugeye. Replaced the frame rail and shock towers to save it. All we can do is frequent washes and krown or fluid film yearly.

Thankfully he was open to the chassis swap as soon as I said how much money he’d save. With all the work going into this now to be race car. It would have been awkward to start with a rusted out bucket. Especially when you want a solid foundation for performance and safety along with the amount of money he will attach to the chassis. Do it right, do it once 👌
