FERRARI V8-SWAPPED Subaru STI Rally Car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yeah, you're looking at a Subaru STI Rally car. Only it isn't...
Rob meets Sam Albert, a rally driver and instructor whose careful reading of the rally-racing rulebook inspired a Ferrari V8 swap into his Subie. Now, epic Italian engine notes echo throughout Washington State’s forest rally stages.
In this episode, Rob gets to grips with rally driving and learns the ins and outs of inserting a naturally aspirated, ear piercing V8 into an engine bay where a turbocharged flat four once sat.
So, genius? Or sacrilege? Let us know in the comments...

I can only imagine just how badly that handles with the engine slung so far out front that there isn't even space for a bumper bar, let alone any radiators! (Note: i worked for Prodrive and we spent a lot of time and effort trying, and mostly failing, to make Scoob's with normal 4 cyl engines handle properly on the WRC stages. We could make them grip, or make them handle, but not both at the same time unfortunately because the front tyres were just overloaded compared to the rears. The WRC cars then came along, after the GrpA ones, and these were mostly based on transverse engined base models, so these could use clever transmissions to put the engine right back against the firewall. On the scoob trans the front drive shafts have to get to the middle of the front wheels so realistically there are finite limits on how far you can attempt to move the engine backwards. We even looked at a "split" front differential, ie a shaft and bevel drive on each side of the crankshaft to try to get the engine behind the front axle line, but the regs were too restricitve as to allowable firewall and tunnel mods necessary to accomodate this......)

From what he's said in other videos, the weight distribution didn't change enough to significantly impact the handling, mostly thanks to the complete lack of all the extra turbo hardware and shoving the radiator into the trunk. So it's still understeery and a bit of a tank on turn-in, but no worse than a normal Subie.

F136 is one of the most reliable V8 engines out there. They are very carefully built and have no design flaw. You can do your own research if you don't believe me, there are many 458 Italia and California with over 300k km.

What a great swap! Well done! Current R5 level Rally cars are on the boring side to watch live, mainly due to their sound to me as they’re a lot quieter than previous gen cars. Flip side being they’re relatively economical to run so there are quite a few in my local rally scene. One of the best sounding rally cars I’ve seen before this one was an Aston Martin Rally GT based on an Aston Martin Vantage V8.
