Subaru Outback Wilderness vs Ford Bronco Sport Badlands | SUV Comparison | Driving.ca

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Ford Bronco Sport Badlands and the Subaru Outback Wilderness have eight driven wheels and 14 syllables between them. They are both off-road versions of their respective CUV models. Even though nearly all CUVs are marketed for their all-terrain capability, very few can tackle even the slightest trail out of the box due to their low-profile street tires, air dams for fuel efficiency, and open differentials. But a new thing is happening in the world of supposedly off-road vehicles - people are actually taking them off-road!
Ford and Subaru have seen this enthusiast demand for using their CUVs off-road and have responded with the Badlands and the Wilderness, which both come upgraded for trail duty. These aren’t as serious trail-bashers as a Toyota 4Runner or Jeep Wrangler, but they’re far more livable in everyday life. In this comparison we’re looking to see not only how they acquit themselves on the weekend trails, but also how livable they are during weekdays running around urban centres.

Some corrections or clarifications from somebody who shopped both of these. The XModes do a LOT more than keeping your CVT in a suitable range. And keep in mind that the differentials used with THIS Outback use lower final gearing for more torque over all the other Outbacks. Xmode has to do with torque vectoring, and the different modes make the torque vectoring work with different parameters depending on what you want, which is environmental, i.e. are you looking for limited wheel spin for the gravel grade, or a more free-wheeling torque balancing for deep snow or mud. Just one example. Also keep in mind that the Bronco ALSO uses torque vectoring which arguably is less seasoned than the Subaru and that MOST of the Bronco sports do NOT have a SIMULATED locker. Only the more expensive Badlands models. And it's not really a locker, it is a clutch for each wheel that are independantly controlled based on the torque vectoring mode, which in Ford is called G.O.A.T. instead of Xmode (Subaru) So unless you get the more expensive top of the line Badlands trim you are getting no simulated lockers, you are getting torque vectoring, just like the Subaru.. Also , the Outback DOES come with Navigation, and given that the one you were driving had a moon roof, it should have been included with that package. This is for the American Market, not sure if you guys are Canadian(checked and YES you are) . But if so, at least you got heated steering. We Yanks did not.One of my pet peeves about Subaru is them playing at rejecting options that exist. For instance you can not get high end sound in ANY sport model of Outback Forester or Crosstrek. Apparently people that like to camp do not like Music. Moving on, you mentioned the Subaru had more cargo space. It can also hold more weight, and has 1300 lbs. more tow capacity at 3500lbs than the Bronco at only 2200lbs which is almost not worth a hitch. I would agree that the Badlands version may have a slight edge because of simulated lockers, although I have not yet seen the test where it could go where the Subaru could NOT, but on paper, this is a slight advantage. It is notable however, as I mentioned before, that 90% of the Bronco Sports on the road DO NOT HAVE LOCKERS, whereas 100% of the Wilderness Subarus have a very effective torque vectoring system that is quite effective and evolved. The Subaru can tow MUCH better so it is much better for trekkers who tow.. The Subaru has better ground clearance by a wide margin of all the models except the Badlands which is only .2" better. The Subaru has a low final gearing by virtue of using the differentials and CVT of it's bigger and heavier cousin the Ascent which is heavier and has larger tires. There is probably more but I feel that when shopping between the two, these are important considerations, most notably the ability to haul more weight and or tow more weight for those that want to do some trekking with a lot of gear. I opted for the Subaru although I really like the Sport. I was actually looking at the BIG non sport Bronco as well, which actually has the same tow rating as the Subaru Wilderness btw. Now that is a beast. But it eats the gas and wouldn't be as efficient for commuting. I am waiting for my Subaru. They said it's due any day. :)

I really liked your description of the Subaru Wilderness. You really did your research. I have a Badlands sport so I will admit my bias and why I went with the bronco and not the wilderness. I fully admit that the Subaru is a better vehicle in almost every way (if you keep out personal preference) until you do get to off road with the Badlands model specifically. If you're torn between the Subaru and a Bronco sport but you're not getting a badlands, get the Subaru. If you are getting the Badlands and you're thinking you may need the extra capability to get to that nice lake campground, get the Subaru instead. However... If you actually NEED (I stress this alot) the better off-roader and that sits higher on your priority list than the cargo space and passenger room, GET THE BADLANDS BRONCO. Seeing the test and where they went with the cars does not even come close to either cars capability, but the Subaru is nowhere close to 9/10ths as good off-road as the bronco. The test mentioned lots of off-road stuff the Subaru had without mentioning that the bronco had the same/ better equipment. They mention higher ground clearance on the Subaru. Yes, by 0.4 inches with a longer body. They mentioned skid plates on the Subaru without mentioning that the badlands also does too. They mentioned the catches for the roof tent. Same tents will fit the Bronco. The test talks about the hidden tow hooks. The bronco has much more substantial hooks in front as well. They mentioned the All Terrain tires on the Subaru without mentioning the same for the Bronco. Just things I noticed in the review that hopefully consumers will catch if they are looking at both. The Subaru does get lots of props for the better towing. I don't tow with my bronco, but if I did... 2200 lbs isnt alot. It really bothers me when testers call the differential in the rear a locking diff. Its incorrect but, please trust me on this, it works very well. A CVT is not ideal for off road. Subaru did a very good job with making theirs work very well in difficult situations, but its not for sustained, heavy trail use. You will hurt your car. The system in the Subaru is also very RE-active where the Bronco is very PRO-acative. The system in the Subaru doesn't start moving power around (using the brakes) until wheels start to spin. The Bronco (using the G.O.A.T modes) can send power direcltly and SIMULATE a locked differential to keep all tires spinning before you're in danger of getting stuck. If you don't know what I mean or haven't had this happen, buy a Subaru. Sorry for the rant. I feel like reviews are leading consumers to false conclusions. Don't advise people on the levels of off-road capability either one of these vehicles are capable of by driving them through a puddle on a nice dirt road. Both are fantastic and capable of a lot more. I picked the Bronco because of its potential. The cargo platform is on top already and the HRG lift gets installed Feb 15th. If you want help deciding on a vehicle you're going to buy with your money, please seek someone you can trust and has (or understands) a lifestyle similar to yours. Glad to see this category of capable crossovers is this good and this competitive. Can't wait to see what's next.

My work vehicle is a 'standard' 2022 Outback. I love everything about it EXCEPT the center cluster. I honestly feel that it is less safe than any other vehicle I have been in. The lack of tactile controls means I have to take my eyes off the road to adjust almost anything. Normally you can wait for a stop light to do this, but on highway trips, that isn't an option. I also don't like the amount of glare that the screen gives, or the visual distortions when using polarized sunglasses. I know I am not alone in this, and I also know that some people like the 'tech' of the screen based system. I wish Subaru made an option to have either a screen, nro a more traditional cluster.

The Subi's overly complex and overwhelming touchscreen is a deal breaker. It frustratingly forces the driver to take his eyes off the road for at least a millennium, just to find the seat warmer and then find what level he wants it. Then he must focus his eyes and spend another dangerously amount of time searching to find the audio section for the station he wants or the 'seek' icon. This all happens while running three STOP signs, a red light, and a crash or two. RIDICULOUS. That touch screen belongs on a Star Fleet ship, not a car. Everyone's not a member of the Geek Squad. Simplicity in operations should the RULE of Thumb!

Agreed. I know that on paper and in experience having a locker, or even a simulated locker is an advantage.. But both of these vehicles are independant suspension torque vectoring vehicles and I have yet to see the review where a Sport goes up something a Wilderness could not also defeat. I'm sure for some situations like loosely packed soft dry dirt having the simulated locker will make it a lot easier. But Subarus can usually figure those situations out. And keep in mind also that only the TOP TRIM BADLANDS even has the ground clearance and locker that compete with Subaru. The rest of the models sit significantly lower and have no locker, simulated or not, and this is 90% of the sports you see on the road. So when I get mine (Subaru) I won't hesitate to follow a Sport up any hill. More than likely, it will be trying to follow me. Also planning on putting in an auto locker which are very effective if somewhat a pita. Databyter

As prices sky rocketed by greedy dealers I ended up with a Japan Made Subaru Forester Wilderness at $35,350 out the door this past January before interest rates climbed. I'm happy with my choice and although I'm not a ford fan I may have been content with having paid much less (closer to mid 20s) when bronco first came out. @@Sethgolas I won't disagree with you about the back axle. A locking rear or even a pseudo locking rear is a fantastic improvement. They are missing one major thing with competing against the Cherokee Trailhawk... Because the Cherokee Trailhawk has a low range and probably 2-3 times the wheel torque if you do the math. Take the craw ratio of the Subaru and multiply it by the peak engine torque... That's basically the amount of torque that's going to your wheels... Now take the peak engine torque of the Cherokee Trailhawk and multiply it by the crawl ratio... If both engines had the same torque the Cherokee Trailhawk has at least double the crawl ratio and will turn the wheels twice as hard in 4wd low. It will also be able to move twice as slow. All of that said this Subaru is a super capable vehicle and would probably beat a compass Trailhawk in scenarios where the approach departure and breaker angles don't matter as much. So I would say the Subaru would probably do better in mud or something like that.

The one that is least abused. I don't think either of these transmissions will be the first thing that goes wrong and I will give reliability to Subaru. The CVT's of past generations have had problems with softroading. They aren't geared right, are sometimes combined with underpowered motors (first gen Crosstrek), they can get hot. But the Wilderness is using the tougher CVT from it's big cousin the Ascent. It is heavy duty compared to some of the others, and in the Wilderness includes an oil cooler to help with cooling. Combined with the lower gearing it should be up to the task of softroading, and overkill for the road. It says a lot that it has a tow rating of 3500 lbs compared to 2000 lbs for the Sport. They are both great cars. I'm sure some Subarus have pulled some non Badlands Sports out of banks as well. A lot is clearance and tires. The Wilderness in this Video has much better clearance and tires than a "loaded Outback Touring" model, and probably as good or better than most other non Badland Sports. The only really good thing the Sports have over the Subaru Wilderness edition is the clutch packed rear differential for those especially challenging circumstances where computer driven AWD logic is not enough. My Wilderness (Yes I bought one since my original post) is almost a different animal from a typical loaded Outback from previous generations. The CVT is tougher, lower geared, and has a cooler. The final drive ratio is lower, The XModes are more aggressive, and also less needed because of the inate capability of the Platform and power plant. I haven't even NEEDED to use Xmode on mine and I've been in snow and sand. It simply wasn't challenged in the least. I'm glad you like your sport. And yes, I WILL keep my Wilderness Edition. For me it was the right choice. I can tow 1500 more pounds, haul more cargo, and it is extremely unlikely you will be pulling me out of any snow banks. I carry a tow strap as well. Ove owned subarus since 1994 and have loved them, despite their tendency for head gasket issues, oil burning, need for timing belt changes at 80k miles, etc. But the biggest issue for me has always been the discomfort of subaru. I am 6 ft 4 in and subs are built for average people. Anyone over 6 ft hits head entering and exiting, gets leg cramps, and I've broken the lumbar support in my 2013 sub twice extending my leg for cramps. The bronco sport had more leg room and I can get in and out without doubling over. I spend a lot of time hauling a canoe and the regular sub has a shit rack system. I need to haul a lightweight boat and trailer and bronco handles that well. And finally, the off road capabilities of the bronco badlands aren't comparable to the subaru. They are much superior unless you are willing to burn your cvt to do some off reading. Plus, everyone now seems to have a subaru. It'll be a while before you see 4 or 5 broncos at a stoplight like you see jeep and subaru . I opted for a bronco sport for many reasons and retired one of my subarus. No, actually not. And the Newer Outbacks use the new Universal Platform which is arguably stiffer and tougher than that of the Sport. One of the many reasons that the Sport cannot tow much, while the newer Outbacks can. Databyter

Why would Ford name the Seats Tabaco in color? Jumping dying, Tabaco is a word of the past!!! Don't consider this Vehicle if they relate to Smoking. Is it Hidden Advertising for Tabaco Companies, I don't know, but something don't Smell Good??????????

By the time this video is over the Bronco sport will have about 2 more recalls, LOL. Ford should be ashamed putting garbage like this on the road.

the Subaru is truly ugly. I would never be seen is that car. That said we have two Subaru Impreza sport and love them. but we live on the beach in Florida, and just got a Ford Bronco Sport too. and love it on the beach.

A lot of yapping on paper specs. Not one off road test drive. Fake reviews.
