Sub Zero freezer frost - 680 terminator switch

Ойын-сауық

Defrost issue related to a failed terminator switch in a 680 side by side unit. The symptom is a giant frost up. It takes a couple days to get like this.
Watch as I diagnose the problem with a non contact voltage meter.
this is an extremely advanced repair due to positioning of the terminator switch, all sub zero and most refrigeration defrost systems work similarly and are not as much of a pain to work on and get to.
Some common error codes you may see are ec40 and ec 24 as well as a vacuum condenser light.

Thanks for the video. I have a 590 model with same problem (1st symptom was no ice, temp not getting colder than 10 F. Took panel off and saw frost, not as bad as in the video, but it was pretty bad. I manually ran the defrost control to force a defrost, but that did not engage. I manually defrosted the condenser coils with a hair dryer and let the freezer run again. Ice started to be made, but the stopped after a couple of weeks. So, I am going to change this terminator (thermostat) and the defrost control (as it is an old unit). I cannot confirm that the terminator is in the same spot as I would expect to see it even without dropping the condenser. Anyway, thanks for the video.

It more than likely is. Be very careful and methodical taking it all apart. Make sure you get that evaporator back on its mounting peg in the back left behind the fan and it should go smoothly from there. The terminator should be mounted directly where it came off of but it’s not the end of the world if it just gets put back wherever it fits. Good luck

@@subzerorepair Okay. I did this exact repair with a new terminator switch. WOW, this was not easy. Getting every thing out and the evaporator out, cables disconnected, etc. Was not too bad. What was hard was the small space in the back upper left area to get the new terminator back into that same area AND the hardest part was to get the latch on the terminator to secure. I ended up taking my laptop, started a Zoom session, then added my Android into the Zoom session with my smartphone video camera turned on and set the smartphone in the back left so I could better see what I was doing. Getting thar terminator latch to secure was the hardest part of the task. I finally got it and all is now working great!! Thanks again for this video as it really helped me resolve my problem. I would have gladly paid a tradesman (or woman) to do this but no one in Vegas that I talked to knew what to do.

How do did you run the Manual defrost? Thanks.

Quick question, I have a 590 and suspect the terminator. After removing the evaporator screws from the ceiling, I pull it off the pegs on the back wall toward the front of the freezer but can't pull it far enough off to get at the terminator. Can I continue to pull away from the back wall without hurting anything? It feels like the copper plumbing will bend if I continue to pull...

Hello, I keep getting the EC40 error, and my compressor continues to run. If I power down the unit for 2 hours, everything returns to normal for a few days, and then the service EC40 returns. The unit makes ice, but some are abnormally shaped, or the bucket looks like water drips into it and freezes, which jams the dispenser. Could the terminator be my issue, too? My unit is a Subzero Model 695/s. Thanks for your help and this video.

Thanks for your video. I have a trouble: when the ice maker is working, there are water leak from the top of the refrigerator. the water leak in the top condenser room. I can't find where is the water from. If turn off the ice maker, then the water doesn't leak. I asked the officer support, they said maybe the drain line was block up. but why the water leak on the top?

It’s the line between The solenoid and the ice maker. It needs the tubing replaced up there. It’s difficult but doable.

I have the same fridge 680/f. It's flashing 'vacuum condenser' and 'ice'. The freezer compressor would not come on. Fridge compressor powers on fine. I've replace 2 control board already. Is there a way to reset or put it to diagnostic?

Sure, but I don’t think a diagnostic mode will help you. Confirm what voltage you are getting at the freezer compressor. If you are getting near 120v then the board is fine and doing it’s job, possibly a bad compressor or starter relay.

@@subzerorepair no voltage at the compressor. I supplied external 120vac to the compressor and it works fine. No 120v output at the control board
