    If they are low we replace the heat exchanger, the evaporator, and the filter drier. If the system was in a vacuum and especially at the heater loop In drain pans...it gets the full Monty. I made an evaporator for a 361rfd the other day. Converted it to r134 as well. Bent everything myself. The only brand I work on is sub zero so I have gotten pretty good and love the people and atmosphere at the factory in Madison. The record currently for us is one from 1978 that is an undercounted beverage center. It's still working today. Then again we've had a 648 proG that had a cut neutral wire in the cabinet and wouldn't fire up on day one. Never know.

    We weren’t sure if it had a leak, just assumed so because we only recovered about 4 ounces, but considering how long the charging hoses are and the recovery machine it’s possible that there’s no leak. BTW, this unit has been running with no problems for a year so far.

    I'm still working on subzero's over 30 years old, so I think you have a way to go. As for the process port if there's not a valve on the freezer compressor then it was probably put on by a service tech. Also is there a process port on the filter?

    Another question, how come you're using a charging column with R12 and R22 markings? Are the measurements i.e. 2 ounces of R134a show up on this R12 column as accurately being 2oz? Great videos!

  • @SubZeroSpecialists

    If you use the R-12 scale you'll be pretty close to the R134a scale. I also have an R134a charging column but it was leaking and I had to get a seal kit. The hoses take up a certain amount of refrigerant which is lost when you disconnect the hoses. This is how I do it, others may have a different way. After 20K sealed-system repairs I've never had an undercharge or over-charge.

    @@SubZeroSpecialists Thank you for your reply. I looked up the formula for R12 to R134a and it goes as R12 Charge Specification x 0.9) - 0.25 = R134a Charge. So for the 7oz of refrigerant that was for that freezer it would equate to 9.5 oz of R12 per the conversion. That would mean that in order to show a correct charge on that column the volume should be at the 9.5 level not the 7. Also that would mean that what you recovered was not actually 2oz but it was lower maybe 1.5oz... I guess it would be easier to weigh the column without the refrigerant than add an actual 7oz and see what the scale on the column would read just to be sure and for future reference... Thanks again for your reply.

    Hey there, if the pan under the refrigerator is always full of water to the point that it needs to be removed and the water tossed out once a week. What could be the problem with the freezer on the 680 year 2000 side by side subzero?

    @@Order-in-Chaos Yes. If the refrigerant is low the condensate heater loop above the drain pan may not get hot enough to evaporate the water in the pan. Other factors could cause excessive moisture in the pan but if your freezer isn't working properly I would tackle that first.

    Great video. I have a 632 Refrigerator that is 21 yrs old that is staying on a constant refrigerator temperature of 44 degrees and blinking service light. I have gone thru all the diagnostics in the manual and had the tech line at subzero walk me thru the error codes. Based on the codes: 01 ice Service off F, 44 Ice Service OFF r, -03 ice service off FE, 46 ICE Service OFF rE, they recommended I call an authorized service tech. I have called several and I am finding their authorized techs do not want to work on a sealed Sub Zero system. The compressors are warm not hot. I am not detecting ice buildup. Is there anyway at this point to tell whether the control panel is bad before installing valves and checking/adding freon?

  • @SubZeroSpecialists

    @SubZeroSpecialists

    You could pull the back panel off and check the frost pattern on the evaporator coil, if you’re low on Freon or have an efficient compressor the top rungs will usually have frost, this is a way of checking the sealed system without a pressure gauge, of course it’s best to check both high and low side pressures to properly diagnose the system.

    On that unit we used 134a refrigerant. We weigh in the freon with either a charging column or scale to factory specs. Always check the back pressure after the unit has a chance to stabilize. An over charged system could produce a frost back at the suction line, usually the back pressure on the refrigerator is 12-15 psi and the freezer 3-5 psi. You can check these specs out on our website under Tech Help at aaronsrefrigeration.com

    If it leaked from the heater loop, it is a leak on the high side, and would leak out at 125-135 lbs of pressure, and be out of freon in a minute, and be very easy to find! You don't seem to know what you are doing, and totally misleading people, as if you know what you are doing, and your methods and use of the wrong tools, shows you do not know what you are doing! Leave the job for a Professional! It did not lose 2 ounces or 4 ounces when you put the low side hose on the valve, sorry, not going to happen with the system at only 40lbs! on the low side, and not running, you are guessing and have no idea what you are doing, and a very good example for everyone out here, as to what NOT TO DO!
