doing anything for 15 hours is obsessive - just because it is studying and grades are treasured does not make it any less obsessive. she gets 8 hours sleep and has 2 hours for other things. that is not a balanced life and most likely why Oxford rejected her - they see through kids who define self worth through academics

The comments section is so bizarre. There are so many criticisms here as if she was holding a gun to these people's head and forcing them to study for 15 hours a day. No where in the video does she say that you HAVE to study like this to be successful. In my opinion, being able to do this shows just how much self-discipline and dedication she has and she should be proud of that. She really doesn't deserve all these inconsiderate comments.

  • @helenhamilton2544

KRadio35 I think it's because the video is presenting an unhealthy and unrealistic (for many people) style of studying, and so self confidence is dragged down when people realise that they can't do this. They start to think, if I can't do this maybe I won't be successful, and then they are miserable because they think they are a failure. It's not Ruby herself who is the problem, it's just the lifestyle the video seems to imply (she's said that she doesn't actually study like this everyday but not everyone will know that)

Just a message to anybody watching this: If studying for this long isn’t gonna help you DON’T aspire to do it. Most people wouldn’t be able to keep focus for this long, and it could actually almost be counter productive to study for this long. You don’t need to work in exactly this way to get top marks! Yes top marks will require effort and dedication, but that can simply mean taking good notes in class, reading over them/ doing further research on them in your spare time, followed by doing a few practise essays or question papers following up this. Don’t stress yourselves out beautiful people!!! Some people respond well to this way of study, some don’t, do what works for YOU!

I wonder if Ruby is extrinsically motivated or intrinsically motivated. Does she stay productive because she fears falling behind other people? Or does she focus on self mastering her productivity? There's no way she isn't deriving some sort of satisfaction from crushing her competition. There's something I'm missing here, can't quite put my finger on it.

V S S i think she did show the process. She writes short introductions and ideas and collects bits and pieces of info here and there. All the things she was doing when not writing essays was essay prep. That's why she could write multiple essays. She likely already had done all the same work you saw her but for the topics that completed essays on. Do what she does for the rest of the video and focus on those pieces instead of the big idea of how to write essays from start to finish

It's a skill. Practice to get better at it. Never stop writing. Everyday write sth informal. A diary. A short review of a book you read or a movie you watched. Be brave to share your opinions. Don't think how to start just start with the first thing that came to your mind. And trim and edit your draft later. Making a draft helps a lot, just like Ruby did, because it makes the process of writing much easier and faster and you stay on point and don't stray too much. However, don't be so afraid to go off topic as well, sometimes this is what makes the essay original. Make connections. Things that seems irrelevant may actually be the same thing. ^_^

A-LEVEL HINTS (from a former grader): There's a "Syllabus" or similar document, in it you will find the whole A-Level split into the various subjects, get that, get together with others on the same course and get as many past papers as you possibly can. Note on the syllabus document which questions you have for that topic (e.g. Q3, Jan 2018 next to topic 2, because that is a question on that topic), when you're done it enables you to revise topic by topic. You get a much better feel for the questions normally asked for that topic and what to revise./// Don't just look at the question, also the marking schemes and expectations and run with that. For occasions where it's "explain and give two examples" and there's 6 marks you get an idea of how two things become six marks and can answer accordingly. There is often a document of common errors, guidance etc. it's meant for teachers but you can look at it too. You might get clues from that. /// There is no reason at all to answer the paper Q1, Q2, Q3.... Q9 but almost everybody does. You can go in any order you like, so if there's an issue with a particular thing remind yourself of it 10 minutes before going in, then look for a question on it straight away, you only have to remember it for 10 or 15 minutes to get the points for it. /// When the exams come close think of it not as getting an education, think of it as the business of passing exams. Doesn't matter how good you are flunk the exam and you're done, doesn't matter how bad you are, pass the exam and happy days! I have seen a particular question come up almost every time (easy to spot going topic by topic) and a school or college just memorised the three sentences in the mark scheme word for word, doesn't matter that they probably had no idea what it meant I could do nothing but give them all full marks! /// If you're still here I admire your boredom threshold, give me a thumbs up if the above is helpful, that'll keep it riding high where others will spot it. Good luck with it all folks, it's a stress but it's worth it in the long term!!! Dave C
