I worked in public and private schools in Chengdu China for a decade. If there is something that students in Chinese learn, it is discipline and respect for their teachers. At the beginning of each class the students have to stand silently and take a bow to their teacher and it is not until the teacher gives them permission to sit down. At the end of class the students have to stand and take a bow in silence. When at any time in class I would crossed my arms automatically all the students in the class inmedatelly would stop talking immidiately and stay quiet in absolute silence. Then after the class in the playground studentes would run to me a high five or a group hug a sign of mutual love and respect.

All teaching staff always encouraged the students that be themselves but at the same time respect the class rules and be mindfulness for others.

I mean I remember learning patriotic schools as a kid and while the lyrics are imprinted in my brain for all times I'm not sure it corresponds to patriotism. At most if I ran into someone who went to the same school as me I might ask if they remember that one music teacher that used to include history lessons in his classes.

I taught overseas for 26 years and being back I see even the military children were disciplined enough because the military parents were supportive. But coming back after retirement and working as a substitute the children here, it is different. The Asian parents overseas tell their children the importance of getting an education plus they pay for their children to go to school.( I remember an incident where a parent said if they did not do well in school then their jobs would be cleaning oil off the filling station concrete without an education. And if they do not want do well in school then they can stay home clean the home like a maid. I know my daughter was playing around in school overseas and I told her story the same story of staying home being my maid and her cleaning oil of concrete and it was a wake up call for her and she became an A student. So, it worked for my child.

It’s amazing to see different countries have different school systems. Here in Wisconsin USA, our school classrooms are very different. Students sit in round table about 5-6 students per table, and they work together as group, they each have their own Chromebook(laptop computer). No dancing.

The Chromebook is one of the worst things to give to the kids. They are heavily censored and spied on. Stup!d school gave me a call saying my daughter was writing about suicide. Then I found out it was a class assignment. Like why are you spying on my kids and why are you giving stup!d assignments. Most of the time, my kids can't even research their assignments because it is so heavily censored. They have to use their regular computer to find info.

The best thing for children is when teachers can use their creativity to teach. Here in Canada, I’m afraid we allow the state to impose too much conformity and disallow this kind of innovation in schools.
