Every retailer has looked at this for decades. This is an old idea. I worked in Loss Prevention in the 1990s and I heard of this back then. We used RFIDs to prevent shoplifting back then and the retailers already started to incorporate scanning capabilities 30 years ago. I think Amazon stores is already doing this anyway.

I love how Michele and Manjit always try to bring up how they "started as students." Michele's father Marvin was an oil and gas executive, and Manjit's family owned a chain of liquor businesses. I imagine it's easier to take risks on your future when mommy and daddy are there with the checkbook.

RFID is about 5 to 10 cents per sticker. But you multiply that by 100k items, you start to see a significant cost. It will also slow down the stocking process as you have to apply the RFID. It just isn't feasible.

I think the best way to prevent theft at self-checkouts would be to have a store emplyee scanning the items for you, I'm sure it's called something but I can't quite remember 🤔

Thats so pointless unless you’re walking out with the basket full of shopping you still need to take every item out individually and bag it up so my not just scan them and save supermarkets spending millions on this technology, the cost of which will be passed on to consumers! At least when self scanners came out it replaced staff wages so the cost was mitigated and not put on to consumers
