    I have found these videos to be informative. I’m 74 and T1 diabetic for 52 years. A year and half ago I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Since then I have come to know much more about how diabetes affects this. The “more” is not nearly enough. Given the bone quality compromise in both T1 and T2 diabetes as well as bone density loss in T1, I believe this would be an extremely important topic for you to address. I sure would appreciate such a presentation.

    Thank you for your solid information. Using only a phone, after searching multiple sites, this one is the only one I have found to provide straight forward info on the pertinent areas of Osteoporosis & bone health. Recently diagnosed with no real help from my medical team, just lots of "arguing" on how to proceed. I have learned so much in the last two weeks from you and was able to bring the same to them. Only one has listened & because of your background and the fact that you always provide clinical trial & studies and give references, you alone are being received as credible and I thank you for all your dedication & hard work. Funny that this video popped up today. I just had my appointment with an osteoporosis specialist (took me 8 months to get the appointment!) and boy did I walk away discouraged. I provided a list of what I am taking and I just started a supplement with strontium and boron in it. She flat out said do not take either. She said strontium makes it look as if your bone density is improving, but it is not. She did quote some studies and mentioned Europe. I have watched so many vidoes and read articles and studies. At this point I have no idea what to do and bascially want to just give up. (I'm healthy, 62 years old, -2.5 and -3 (spine) t scores). Thank you for your videos.

    I've watched several of Dr. Lucas' videos and I must say he doesn't sugarcoat anything. He tells it like it is and it's obvious he does his research. I'm a 69-y/o male who was diagnosed with osteopenia more than ten years ago. Neither this nor osteoporosis runs in my family and I have to attribute it to extreme emotional and psychological stress over a prolonged period of time as well as not eating correctly during the same length of time (years). (I have other conditions that also may have resulted from this stress.) I am not currently seeing doctors (wish not to provide the reasons), so these videos are quite helpful.

    Wow it helped me understand the confusion. I still don’t know if I should be taking Strontium. Instead of everyday I take it on and off. I bought AlgaeCal but I am not completely taking it. I have a hard time getting dietary calcium. I don’t know what to eat and if it has calcium it seems like I have to eat a lot. Also, I would like to know how to ask a Dr. for a look at bone turnover and the other things you mentioned. Dexa is the only thing they mentioned and 1200 mg of calcium a day.

    Hello, Great questions and understandable concerns. Strontium is a bit controversial, and probably not for everyone. Fortunately, it is probably not critical to a foundational bone health program. The recommendations for calcium can be challenging to meet. I recommend joining our master class if you haven’t already. It’s free and we will dive into some of these topics, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions.

I have independently taken D3 which I titrate up to 5000 iu from October-March, I then reduce to 3000 iu for late spring thru to fall. Calcium magnesium phosphorus D3 Strontium citrate. Further something I haven’t watched on your channel is taking glucosamine and chondroitin 1500/1200 strength. My orthopedic surgeon recommends it. I haven’t consented to any drug for osteoporosis. My spine which is scoliotic is worse(first dexa) than my hip which has osteopenia. So I’m on a journey using stomping three times a day since I am disabled from my hips and severe rotational scoliosis that’s got torsion L-5-S1 nerve root impingement and degenerative changes I must be careful not to overdo it and cause more pain. I am still flexible and this keeps me functional. Since my orthopedist is really my best resource for managing the chronic pain, he is involved as a consulting provider.

    Thank you for this video! This does clear up questions I had about strontium. I am interested in bone health because my 79 year old mother in law fractured her back a few years ago due to severe osteoporosis. I have her on vitamin D and vitamin K but she also is only treated by a provider who follows conventional medicine protocols and is on Boniva also. I am planning on taking your bone health masterclass. For myself, I have a question. I am age 56. I am post menopausal since age 52. I read that providers do not typically order a dexa scan until age 65. I am considering asking for something now to get an idea of where I stand BEFORE age 65. I am a cyclist and broke my left leg 10 years ago in a relatively slow speed crash on gravel. I ended up with a comminuted tib/fib fracture and have a long tibial plate and a smaller plate on my fibula along with about 17 screws. That made me question my bone health situation. I stopped taking calcium at all several years ago. I now only take vitamin d 2000 IU and vitamin k2 100mcg daily. My last vitamin level about a month ago was 64. I work with a Functional Medicine MD at Cleveland Clinic and was considering asking her to order something to assess my current bone health status. I was wondering if should I ask for a dexa scan or the bio marker blood tests first?

  • @Dr_DougLucas

    @Dr_DougLucas

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Michele, Thank you for sharing your story. I'd ask for both! Getting a baseline DEXA is great basically at any age. I have caught osteoporosis in unsuspecting athletes looking for body composition analysis on DEXA. The bone turnover markers P1NP and CTX are great tools as well to understand the status of your bone metabolism. We want this info on all patients every 6 months.

However, do you think it would be enough to take just 1 capsule a day which would amount to the 300mg you are referring to in the video?

But I do not do any specific excercise a regularly. When I got my results I ordered Garden of Life Grow bone vitamins code pack. It has 2 bottles. One is Grow bone calcium and the other is Growth Factor S (which says 2g strontium) Both these bottles say they have blend of organic fruit & vegetables, raw probiotic & enzyme. I thought it peculiar that with all the vegetable powders I read on the bottle that the capsules are white inside. 🤔 Anyway, do you know anything about these vitamins and would you recommend them? Hi Thank you for your videos..i just found them 🙂; Strontium has shown to increase P1NP, and decrease CTX, thus building bone. DeXA scans show a better value due to Strontium weight. but its still building bone. And This is just bone quantity. Half the picture. What I don't understand , and is frustrating is that we have TBS machines that show QUALITY. Why isnt this device used in conjunction with DEXA? And why do Doctors prescribe medications without the full picture. ( no TBS, and no bone markers). I use 250mg STrontium / nightly ; separate from my calcium and other minerals; my dexa improved ; but I have no idea if the quality improved I use the WBV daily, fast walk 15-20 miles/week . And used Fosomax with bad side effects. I am also 58 and don't want to start the drug train quite yet and maybe never. Do you think this supplement is not getting proper studies on it bc of the success of it ? I also find it interesting that neither study included TBS scores ; bone markers are great but sometimes based on what you do, time of day, and what you eat, it can alter the results/. Thank you for your insight and videos.

    Hi there! Welcome to the channel. TBS I haven’t found to be that helpful. It doesn’t really help us to guide treatment. The fragility score on REMS does and of a patient has access I recommend it. To play devils advocate, doctors prescribe based on FRAX or simply by T-score because that’s what they are told to do…… cookbook medicine.

    Hi Tammi, That's the way we are trained. DEXA, diagnosis and drugs. Bone quality can be imaged through REMS an ultrasound device that also gives a T-score. Unfortunately these devices are not available everywhere. If you can't find one there isn't another easy way to know. We have to use other markers to demonstrate bone improvement.

My dr being very negligent sent for a bone scan at the age of 70 only because I asked him to and I am now considered severe. • @Dr_DougLucas

    @Dr_DougLucas

    Hello, It's controversial but my perspective is that it's not "cheap bone" just because it's not calcium. Bone naturally has strontium in it and we are simply giving the osteoblasts what they want. It will likely increase your DEXA more than only calcium but is that "fake" or simply a representation of the mineral composition of your bones? Bone density is not that important anyway so if a mineral can reduce fractures it's probably worth using. If my patients are uncomfortable we don't. Would it be a good idea to do a new trial combining these two studies: Melatonin 5 mg AND DHA (from Purified Fish Oil): 250 mg. Vit D3 2000 IU, vit K2 100 mg. And strontium 250 mg (smallest amount per caps in the market). And what about the tiny amount of elemental magnesium…

    I can think of all kinds of great trial ideas! Unfortunately, trials are expensive and the margin on these products is not large enough to support creating a trial. What we can do though is extrapolate the data and test to make sure we are seeing the results we want to see!

    What is your recommended dose of Mg per day? What is MCHC form of calcium? Where can i get it?

  • @Dr_DougLucas

    @Dr_DougLucas

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello, MCHC stands for Calcium Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite (MCHA). There are several good sources out there. We use a few different versions but Metagenics and OrthoMolecular have good products. The amount depends on your dietary intake and other factors. Knowing this number is important though as too much can be dangerous too! The recommendation the NOF is 1,200 - 1,500mg per day of total calcium intake.

    I'm not at the stage of medication yet, but have issues with my kidney's eGfr 6 months ago 63, steady for years, now 44. Worrying as I've been issued with calcium/vit D over the time so don't know of the calcium is giving my kidneys a problem. My iron is also just above minimum now, was higher. They have tested thyroxin, reducing my medication from 100 to 75 (thyroid removed 16 years ago). Neutrophil is abnormal (high) So I think my bone medication may be making my kidneys worse, plus raised neutrophil being high is a worry. More blood tests in 6 week's, finger's crossed.

    Hi Dr. I have osteoporosis and I am planning to take algaecal plus and strontium boost I read that is strontium citrate and is recommended 2 capsules a day. I had problems with my liver enzymes two years ago wich went through the roof and took almost a year to come back to normal my liver specialist never founded out the reason all he recommended was stop taking all my supplements/vitamins which I was taking at that time (several) and I was having blood work every two months and we could see that my enzymes were coming back to normal. I have a lesion in my liver I had 2 MRI'S and it shows that is stable. My question is do you think is safe for my liver to take strontium (citrate) the only thing I am taking now is vitamin D k/2. Thanks

However, I can encourage you to work with your team and bring up this issue to them. Then, you can work together to plan for the best next steps. There is not sufficient evidence to clearly answer your question one way or another so if you were my patient I would recommend a trial with lab retest.

    DEXA scans? Do they not do other tests to determine the health of bones? It is my understanding that Strontium, being heavier than calcium, simply shows stronger on a DEXA scan but tells us nothing about bone health (thinking of things like Fosamax, which shows great on a DEXA scan, but it's showing old bone tissue that is supposed to be gone-bye-bye) Anyone?

  • @Dr_DougLucas

    @Dr_DougLucas

    11 ай бұрын

    Hello, You are correct. DEXA does not tell us bone quality. Only quantity of mineralization. Strontium does absorb xray better and as a result will increase BMD more than calcium alone. However, we look at that as not a "false" increase but rather an expected finding. Strontium is naturally part of bone and giving it as part of a regiment is reasonable. It's optional for our patients but on the list of acceptable and recommended.

    Is 2 grams of strontium too much?

  • @Dr_DougLucas

    @Dr_DougLucas

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Cathy, Depends on the form. The studies on the drug in Europe used 2g of strontium ranelate but that only accounted for around 700mg of strontium. The supplements available in the US use strontium citrate which is a similar weight. I see this listed in variable ways on labels but either they fail to mention the actual amount of elemental strontium or they seem to aim for the same target that the drug used. So, long answer short, it seems like 2g of strontium citrate is the recommended dose by companies making the product.

    So im 63 and had a total hysterectomy at 29 due to endometriosis and having a double ( bicornate uteri) due to DES exposure . I have SEVERE OSTEOPOROSIS with a dex scan at -4.3 to -4.7 in hips and spine I'm having spinal fracturing all the time 4 compression in my thoracic spine last month alone and more this week in my L1 and 2 I was just diagnosed with RA recently and had lost my ability to even walk to the bathroom and lost 75 lbs almost over night and given PREDNISONE of all things and Luflonamide that initially was LIFE RESTORING but now Im having a lot of pain in my kidneys since last week i stopped EVERYTHING for a few days and it helped a LITTLE but not alot so I called my dr and she said keep taking my meds ?? I see a rheumatologist who prescribed the prednisone and I have been on it for 2 or 3 months now and down to 5 mg a day with 20 mg laflunomide . I take CBD 100 mg daily and thc gunmys about 10 to 20 mg at night only for sleep and NAPROXEN SODIUM 550 mg 2x a day for pain but only take it occasionally since I've been on prednisone. .I just ordered the ALGAE -CAL with strontium boost and omega 3s liquid ( at 150 a month and im on SSI and cant really affird it but my mind tells me i cant afford NOT TO EITHER with such SEVERE BONE LOSS .I expect delivery today and am afraid I'm wasting my money and doing more damage than good .No one has prescribed exercise or nutritional support and MY dr wants me on INJECTIONS DAILY of God knows what but I declined and I DONT WANT TO TAKE tgese bone building BIG PHARMA DRUGS and risk my liver and necrosis and my question is Do these supplents to build bone really help or NOT ? I am willing to fork over the cash without insurance if it will really help and start a mediteranean diet with bone strenghtening excercise if i can do it without more fractures THEY ARE VERY PAINFULL AND DEBILITATING Also I have to have major dental work done to extract most of my broken teeth and terrified of Necrosis of the jaw . I live in Santa Cruz ,CA. and on SSI so insurance won't pay for much but crap like prednisone im desperate for guidance and help. If you are able to afford me ANY ADVICE suggestions or can recommend somewhere to go like Stanford or other local teaching hospital or study a local Doctor maybe who can help me try to address this as naturally as possible despite how severe my bone loss is I will be extremely grateful . Thank you for reading and response 🙏

    That is a really tough story and hard to read. I’m sorry that you’ve gone through so much so early in life. As I say often, there is a role for pharmaceutical management of Don Hồ. Particularly when multiple risk factors exist that are not modifiable like chronic prednisone use, and Other medical conditions that also can cause debilitating issues. A comprehensive plan would certainly be helpful for you. I recommend that you join our master class where we will drive into things that you can do on your own, and demonstrate some resources that you could consider as well. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions at that time.
