Thank You so much for these exercises, so I can continue my recovery even though it has been 20 years since my stroke at 25. I am unable to see if these exercises are helping me as I just started them yesterday and I have finally been sent to occupational therapy after an intermission of 15 years. Recovery does not end in the first few years as originally thought. I am living proof , as recovery is continuing even after 20 years. You have been inspiartional in this video also as there are minor details I recognize in your movement that causes me to believe you have come a long way in your recovery. Thank You!!

I have been waiting for this video for a while. My hand is moderate but these exercises are exactly what i been looking for. Im a stroke survivor just past my 1 year. I actually found a glove that i made rigid called neofect glove it has straps for all finger and the wrist what i do i put popsicle sticks on the inside on both sides. I try to wear it half the day. Im now trying to regain my hand movement now so thank you i been following your videos and using it as part of my recovery regimen. Please dont stop and thank you so much.

YES!!! I love popsicle sticks! I use tongue depressors and I usually tape them to the fingers during therapy. I like the tongue depressors because they are wider and you finger won't "spill over the sides". Keep up the great work and the suggestion about the glove!!

I really appreciate these videos. I had a car accident in 2007. I had a thriving fashion business. And I was on my way to a fashion show featuring my work. When the driver went head-on with a hummer, we were in a Honda. Well first, my carotid artery had at least five major strokes. Went into a coma. Had a swollen brain. Broken ribs, fractured skull. Well, I was so glad I got to you able to walk again. And some things just didn’t get better. I was a dancer before and really wanted my body back. It was such a disappointment that this happened for me. Of course, it is for anyone. I just hated addressing it. But the other side of that is worse. Having a business a very needy business, I went back to work . I gave everything to it. Ignoring what had happened to the best of my ability which was obviously not easy because I had cross eyed for two years, had a cane and was unable to lift anything. Blah blah blah. I’m sure all of you with strokes can comprehend what I’m talking about. Being at Dancer thinking I can do this myself.. but didn’t., just not really wanting to deal with it. I’ve kind of let some things just be left that’s a broken leg my left side, my left hand, balance, my feet, jumping. Just figured it ain’t their anymore. This is voice texting puppy, making a mess out of this but I just wanted to say thanks really like these. And I have some finger issues I want to address. Maybe I can share that at some point.

Hello Dr. Tobias. Thank you for the precious information. I really appreciate it. As a person diagnosed with cerebral palsy (left side affected) in early childhood, I used to attend physical therapy, but then I grew up and nobody cares about that anymore. I still have mild spasticity and a lateral pelvic tilt (which I have just discovered at the age of 38!, so it has never been addressed actually) and engage in strength training. To tell the truth, it’s my plateau in the gym that made me think of solving those old problems. I have never really thought of myself as a disabled person, so I lift heavy and I want to lift even heavier, but these (brain?) issues are standing on my way. Sorry for the long intro, my question is how can I coordinate the upper and lower extremities to become a “normal” person? Should I train them individually or together? Could you cover that please? Thank you once again. Ella

I have difficulty to supinate my arm it is constantly in pronation mode. I have a little bit of spasticity, my index and middle finger doesn’t cooperate when I try to open; and at nights when I sleep it folds in a ball. What I do is create my own splint using a makeup palette for bedtime. Growth has been slow but I can snap my fingers and do a thumbs up 👍🏽 among other things. Thanks for this video.

Dr., I have arm strength with a decent range of motion when lifting but when I walk either my elbow has a bend likely from spasticity, or if relaxed my arm can feel floppy. My arm is not flacid as I can do exercises with small weights but what can I do other than stretch for the floppy arm? For the shoulder, I do slide upward pushes with a towel in my hand up a doorway. I can raise my arm above my head, but My challenge is a movement similar to a shoulder press. Is there another exercise?

Thank you so much for everything you’ve taught me!!! I have MS, been recovering for about 10 months now! I had a really bad relapse which made me paralysed on the right side and made me loose the ability to speak! I forgot everything! I had to be spoon fed, I had to remember my name, I couldn’t dressed or anything! And this COVID thing is stopping all of my therapy!! 😂🙄 so I’m doing it from home 🏠 Xx

Just came across this while researching. I'm a 52 yr old , had a right side ischemic stroke in Jan of 19 impacting the left side. Have better arm movement with moderate spasticity but still can't open hand and extend fingers but can I can lift fingers up. For active training, I pick up with each finger small pebbles of dog food and drop in a cup. Will repetitive motion trying to open without being able to do so train my brain to only lift and not open?? You are exceptional in explaining this!

Btw, your pulling of the fingers ie the thumb works for me. Basically, the index, centre fingers work excellent, however the fourth and the last fingers are not that great for that exercise. Should i do it more to the last two fingers?

I dont know if you made a splint yet but fyi when my son was in a coma his pt made a special splint to keep his hands open with this special material that came in sheets they traced around his hand and arm cut it out with scissors soaked it in hot water molded it on his hand and arm in the position they wanted and as it dried it became solid then they marked where they wanted straps and brought it back the next day with everything attached when i asked what it was they said a type of cast material but it was thick and skin toned and when it hardened it didnt bend or anything it felt smooth and hard like plastic

You want us working with a PT for correct electrode placement on the forearm/hand??? I'd that'd be more in the realm of OT. You mentioned that we should massage our hand. Does it matter if we can feel at every area of the hand/arm? I can't see how massaging could possibly be detrimental, yet I just don't know how imperative being able to feel in the areas I massage is.

That's not hard. Put one electrode on the belly of the muscle and other close to the wrist. Slowly increase the intensity. Also, put your arm on a wedge.means, lower close to elbow and higher edge close wrist.
