Straightforward Career and Job Advice

Ойын-сауық

It’s all too common for us to think of our work as either the thing that gives us our identity, or something to be avoided at all cost, or some unhealthy combination of those two misleading philosophies. In this video, Fr. Mike aims to bring inspiration to our everyday jobs by showing us how our labor can be a way to share in God’s nature. By striving to look past humanity’s brokenness and sin, we can move beyond seeing work as a burden, and see how every act of work has dignity.
Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:

I’m only 26 and I’ve had at least 20 jobs. I realize that I’ve been making work a place where I look for meaning, and tire as soon as it doesn’t offer that. I pray that the Lord purifies this disordered good & that I may offer up what I deem as “insignificant work.”

I especially appreciated the end when you talk about work as an act of worship when offered to God. As a seminarian, my "job" for now, my duty of the moment is to be formed and to study. This can be pretty tough sometimes because my call is not to be a seminarian, but I'm in an interim stage that is preparing me for my "career" as a priest. Sometimes, the only thing that gets me through a paper or a study session is the fact that I can offer it as a prayer to the Lord; that through self-denial and the exercise of my creative gifts, I can offer my papers, my exams and my studying as an act of worship to God. Hopefully other college students are turning their work into prayer as well!

Wow, thank you! I’m in med school and what bothers me is that a lot that a lot of people think that if you don’t give up your life entirely to this profession you’re not going to be a good doctor. I came here for two reasons: I do want a meaningful job, but I also want a job that pays so that I can work part time and be with my future kids as much as possible. I have actually never said this to anyone because it sounds selfish, but you have given me peace about it. I want to work, rest and love. God bless!

I am a carpenter .. and it has been a grueling job for many year . sliced off fingers and broken hip.. blood is part of the job . scared of falling to my death but also seeing the divinity in what I do .. So many times I have stood back and cried .. I worried how I will make it the next week when injured and wondered why I was injured .. I would go to work and in my truck and pray .. I saw God in my work ! .. I would cry and get so excited when I'd see what I was able to do .. I felt The Lord and wondered why me .. Not why me in the sense of struggle .. But why me in .. Why did you give this Gift to me ? Things I couldn't figure beforehand .. I'd ask .. Show me .. and it happened .. I was witnessing like an observer and I'd get so excited .. I know my job might not pay that great .. I go to bed tired and wake up the next day excited and have never lacked food . I was provided for by God .. I was given an opportunity as a young man to build my parents house in 1986 .. I didn;t know what I was doing but it happened !! I hugged my mother in the back yard and told her " I didn't have a clue " and she said to me .. You have been given a Gift .. both of my parents passed in their beloved house years later .. and many years ago .. I understood the Gift and not only the work and toil .. But pass it on !! .. Show others what you know , teach and tell them they can do it and though they might not believe in God .. Testify always .. That it was Through The Lord unashamedly .. I will never take credit for all I have .. It was a Gift .. I will never curse God for the struggles ..I was taught through them and learned to love work and I see work as like a prayer .. I can give Glory to God through these hands .. .

I feel like I always run into this unhappiness in jobs because society has this idea that your final career/the spot you should settle on is a job you'd do for free. Because of that, I'm always looking to jump ship to get closer to whatever that might be (even if I'm not quite sure what that job would be). Thank you, Father Mike, for putting work in a realistic view.

All of a sudden, today I received 2 interviews to 2 different jobs and I was having a difficult time picking between the two. In college, I changed my major multiple times from the health field to social science to business and now I’m so satisfied with my major and don’t have the anxiety I used to. Perfect timing for this video! God is good, all the time!

I am studying accounting at the moment (2nd year) I plan to do some coding courses and then holefully by the Grace of God get employed in Denver, to never lose sight of the mountains and be close to Jesus there. This story is kinda messy, please mention me in your prayers. Maria

I’ve been applying to jobs, and the rejection is tough. I got rejected from one (of many) jobs on December 1st, and yesterday, they sent me the rejection email again. Talk about kicking me when I’m down. I’m feeling so down because for the first time in my life, I don’t know anything. I graduated college. No more school. No more structure. I feel like I’m sitting around collecting dust. All I do is search for jobs every waking hour. I’ve been praying and praying, looking at scripture like proverbs 3 and psalm 23, but I just feel so scared and abandoned. Everyone else is finding jobs. I hate this.

Jessica, being unemployed and only hearing "no"s are really tough. Keep asking for the grace to grow in hope and faith (as it seems you are). I know this sounds trite - but you really only have to hear one "yes". Here's a practical tip: create some daily routines, go to Mass and Adoration as often as possible, and keep contacting your network of friends and family for help. We are praying for you. God bless you!

Thank you, Fr. Mike. I was in need of advice in regards to my career that I've been doing for the past seven years. I asked God for what HE wants and not what I want and I felt that your words here was His answer/guidance to most, if not all, questions I had.

Well, i got out of the corporate life and the shirts and ties to open a Window Cleaning business and I love it. We had a great opening(Oct-Dec) but, now we are dying on the vine and everything is in place. Digital advertising, website, 3rd party leads and it's not going so well, I have prayed that my family needs this but, to no avail so far, weather is still spotty(and the forecast looks as good as it can be) in my area hopefully God will answer our prayers so, I can feed my family.

Fr. Mike, I'll be honest. This comment does not have a lot to do with the video, but has more to do with a personal struggle. I'm 18 years old now, always identifying myself as agnostic. Yet some part of me is quite sure that there is a God, specifically the christian one. What should I do? My relatives will surely object to any possible worship I do, and I feel alone. Thank you for your time, may the Lord bless you.

Berend de Liagre Bohl God will lead you to Himself. Because, He has placed something on your heart. I would find your nearest Catholic Church and go to it for mass and maybe set up a meeting with a Catholic priest by you. I will be praying for you.

Berend de Liagre Bohl You will never feel alone once you start searching for God. And you will realize He was and always is and will be with you. I am very happy to see an 18 year old seek for God and continue to do so because God will fill all the gaps we cannot fill even with closest family or friends around us. There will be many obstacles when you get closer and closer God, but He will walk alongside with you and you will get through the struggles. I say follow your heart you are in the right route, especially by asking Father Mike Schmitz what you can do. God bless you! Sorry I was touched by this comment.☺

#askfrmike Hi there Berend, It took a lot of courage to ask your question and I am so grateful for your honesty! Dont worry you are not alone, you have a whole bunch of people rooting for you and praying for you at this very moment, :) I'm not sure how often Fr Mike responds on here, but he always does. If you would like to talk to him privately also, you could try emailing him. He was really prompt in replying to me. Something that has always been helpful for me is just sitting in Gods presence in the Chapel. If there is a Catholic church near you I would highly recommend going. I never really knew how to pray before so I just sat there with Him, sometimes I would just cry, and eventually I learned how to open up to Him. Weekday mass is always a wonderful blessing. (there's less people there so it wont be too intimidating) If you would like some reading material: "Rome sweet Home" by Dr Scott Hann is one of my favorites at the moment , as is Jennifer Fulwiler's "Something Other than God" . And , The Imitation of Christ. Lifeteen.com also has some great online resources- videos, blogs, articles; and could help you find a great faith community! And if you are in college: The Newman Center on your campus is probably gonna be your favorite place. I hope this is a little helpful to you! and I am praying for you, your family and your journey with God!

Berend de Liagre Bohl Please take the bible. New testament, and start reading and praying, I'm sure you will hear the Lord guiding you to himself and show his plan for your life. Go to church and try to find people to talk to there. It's always good to have church community. Lord God bless you and your loved ones

This and earlier videos on this topic have been helpful for me leaving college and working and now married. Very different outlook and helpful inisght. Its so true that we can have what we do or how much money we make define our dignity or value as a person. When really there is dignity in all work and we work to live and for liesure. Making a living is a good life, with dignity and truly is a blessing.
