What’s a Sign from God (and What Isn’t)

Ойын-сауық

Signs are often tricky and fuzzy. They’re not always such a good tool for helping you make a decision.
Let’s be honest: we want shortcuts. We want God to do the hard work and make big decisions for us. Doing God’s will is the purpose of life, but that does not mean he is going to just reveal exactly what you ought to do. That would violate our freedom.
God speaks in clarity, not fuzziness. If he is telling you to do something, there will be no doubt that he is telling you. This kind of sign, however, is rare because in order to be a disciple of Christ-at some point-we have to make the tough decision to follow him on our own. There are steps that can help in this process:
1) Gather the data.
2) Seek counsel.
3) Weigh all the options and risks.
4) Take the responsibility for the decision you need to make.
If you follow those steps, the decision will be clear. God wants us to use our intellects to make decisions. He wants us to be stewards of our own lives. We can base our decisions on the facts rather than mere feelings and fuzzy signs.
If you would like more help making any kind of decision in your life, try the book, Pray, Decide, and Don’t Worry (tinyurl.com/yy6hk27j) by Bobby and Jackie Angel with Fr. Mike Schmitz.

A priest told me once “At some point you need to make a decision, and if you make the right one or the wrong one, God will still be there with you guiding you to holiness”. This was in reference to discerning a job.

I am a teacher, a few years ago I was working at a school that was very toxic. It was toxic in ways that led me to massive amounts of stress and bitterness towards everyone in my life. Stubborn me, I wouldn't quit. I kept getting strong urges to put in my notice and quit but my pride wouldn't let me. Teachers are in short demand these days and I knew that I could find another teaching job quickly, but my ego wouldn't let me do it. One morning on my way to work, I prayed and said Father if you want me to leave this job you're gonna have to give me a clear sign. Well, later that very same day, I was told that I wasn't a good fit at this particular school and that my contract wouldn't be renewed; basically I was fired. It was a relief even though my pride and ego were severely bruised but within the next 2 weeks I was interviewed and hired at a school closer to me with better supports and opportunities.

What I can attest to, is that the Father loves us all, he doesn't love any of us less than the next person though it may feel that way. When we ask for answers and signs, when we pray and look to the father for help, it doesn't mean we are going to get the results or help we want. The Lord wants us to trust Him. My faith has been tested many many times. Long story but Jesus saved me from deep, dangerous occult (not to mention serious sin!) and prior to being saved/conversion experience idolatry was so rampant in my mind even though I was seeking to do God's will in everything. So I have been tested to trust God and to do God's will no matter what others around me thought incl my kids, husband, mother, sister. Painful but was necessary to go through all this to be so close to our Lord to do His will in all. Bless you in your discernment!

One problem that adds to the difficulty of making decisions is having clinical depression. I lived it. Try to get married with that over one’s head. Called off my first wedding 3 weeks beforehand. It was humiliating, almost unheard of in my day and my Mom wouldn’t speak to me for a couple of months. We married 2 years later. Trying to decide what to do was a nightmare. Once I weighed everything, I decided to marry quickly so I couldn’t change my mind. ( Depression is exhausting ) I thought about everything to do with marriage and being Catholic, and although he was not my great love ( ruled that guy out a few years earlier, because of possible alcoholism ) I felt it was my best choice. Seeing so many people terribly “ in love “ who had divorced, I knew that it had to do with commitment. Celebrated our 44th Anniversary last month! Love is not a feeling - it is a commitment.

@@deirdremorris9234 Hi Deidre, if you can give me your opinion...there was a young man I dated for about 4 months last year. I dated him because he was very strong and solid in his faith and love for Jesus. From day one I never felt any type of physical attraction to him but I wanted to give God a chance to grow my physical attraction towards him because I knew the guy would make a faithful, loving husband one day. We also were lacking in chemistry, I felt drained and conflicted after hanging out with him instead of rejuvenated and excited to see him again. But I kept telling myself to hang in there because maybe God would produce some chemistry over time. Unfortunately the more I tried to force myself to imagine a life with him, the more I felt like I would probably feel 'trapped' and lonely in a marriage relationship with him. I guarded both our hearts to the best of my ability by not allowing anything physical to happen during dating including kissing. And I'm really grateful that I did that because his feelings for me outpaced mine for him significantly and he started to talk about marriage around the 4th month mark. I knew in my heart that I wasn't able to commit myself to him in that way so I shared my heart with him about my internal conflicts and discontinued seeing him. What I'm getting at is, do you believe the only necessary thing for a good marriage is reverence for God and forgiveness? I've struggled with feelings of wondering if I am "shallow" because I didn't choose to marry this guy who loved the Lord very much. Do you have any thoughts on this? Does God want us to feel some type of reverence for our partners in addition to sharing spiritual values? Or should we marry someone without any attraction and chemistry, and hope for the best if they have same spiritual beliefs and seem like they would be a good spouse?

Something that always helps me in my decision making process is having very candid prayer with the Lord Jesus. I talk to him as if he is sitting at the foot of my bed listening very intently. (Which he actually is) I am also someone who will take whatever time I need in order to make a sound decision. Many times in my life I have made some really dumb decisions in haste. I learned that haste is of the Devil himself. Patience and prayer have been my best weapons in making good and sound decisions about any of lifes challenges. I also think to myself "What would please Jesus?" How can I be a good steward of what he has blessed me with in order to make good for myself or others? I hope this helps you. They are things I think about and pray about when I need to discern how to make a good decision.

Caroline, as long as you are on this earth, then you know that God has a loving plan for you -- otherwise he wouldn't leave you here. We all have made poor choices in our lives, but as the Portuguese saying goes, "God writes straight with crooked lines." I thought I had missed out on God's calling as a young man, but later I ended up going in a completely unexpected direction that has allowed me to use the gifts He gave me to help build His kingdom. He is the God of Second Chances (and third and fourth chances -- even 70 x 7 chances!). Read His Word and the works of good spiritual writers, find a sound spiritual adviser, and learn how to listen and discern His promptings. And try to live in each day in accordance with His will. The rest of your life will work itself out. I'm praying for you.

Making a decision is one of my biggest weakness. When I was a child I always relied on parents decision (not their fault). It came to the point that I didnt know how to decide for myself. Was too scared of taking risk and loosing. I was so used to letting others decide for me that simple tasks takes time for me to handle and I am unable to defend what I want. I was also always waiting for a sign. So for parents out there. Teach your child how to make decisions while they are young. Make them understand that its ok to make mistakes. Thats its ok to take risks.

Thank you for this timely video, Father. I'm currently discerning my religious vocation and your video is just the push I needed. Was putting off making a decision on this because it's a life-altering choice, to put it mildly. I'm still afraid but your explanation gave me the encouragement I needed. Thank you!

@@lukebrasting5108 thank you for the advice, good point! Unfortunately, I am unable to as I'm discerning the call to religious life (orders of religious nuns). I'll see though if they have more traditional orders. God bless!

My sons widow and baby have moved in with me and making decisions is terribly hard. We are both grieving and would rather not have to make any decision. It would help if God just could just tell me what to do. 🙏🏻😢💔✝️

In 2004 I heard the voice of Jesus. My priest knew I would never ever say this. But one night during Lent on a Monday I heard “ ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE HAVE FAITH.” It was very audible, authoritative and real. There was confession and Mass at my home, and ten years later to the day my son died. It was a warning to me to stay faithful. My priest also said to me never tell another especially a religious as they will not believe you because they are religious and why not happen to them. It is etched in his stone and I will go to my grave with this truth. This locution.

After my pre-Cana retreat I was having HUGE doubts about whether I should marry this man or not. I prayed for a sign. On the drive home I saw a rainbow and thought OH! a sign of a covenant! ... Our annulment was granted this year.

Maybe its because of the hunger to listen to our Father. Also if He is so obvious then we are no free to choose. I would love to know, just not to waste any minute more. Its as i am wasting gold dust, but i am dust, maybe its not requeired to do it all perfect, just continue and trust Him, and share his love. Kisses to you all.

Fr. Schmidt was right, I was using it as an excuse to avoid making the choice myself.
