The word minivan is synonymous with Chrysler as a brand. Introducing the car-based minivan in 1984 as the Plymouth Voyager and the Dodge Caravan, it rated high among buyers with its great gas mileage, car-like ride as it was K-car based rather than the truck frame Aerostar and Astro vans that were also available. In 1989 as a 1990 model, Chrysler Introduced the Town & Country with its standard woodgrain appliques and gathered leather seats until the 1991 model year, where the three would be re-designed together.
Coming with the minivan heritage was innovative seating systems that were hallmarks of these vans. Quad-Command seating in the 1991-1995. In 1996, Easy Out Roller Seats debuted as well as the Left hand Sliding Door to make passenger ingress/egress easy and removal of the seats were made easy from the innovative technology. It's widely known that seats are heavy and the rollers made moving them much more convenient.
2001-2007 saw a re-design of the minivans and, a re-design in the seating technology. Gone was the availability of AWD because of the innovative and brand-new, industry only Stow n' Go® Seating. This technology resulted in completely new seats that folded flat into dedicated floor wells. This added additional storage in the vehicle when the seats were upright and negated the necessity of removing and rolling heavy, ungainly seats. Unfortunately, this also eliminated the availability of AWD.
2008 Saw the redesign of the current van as of today, with minor changes along the way.
2011 model year was the mid-cycle refresh and saw the current changes including minor exterior updates and a whole interior upgrade. This resulted in the easy-effort Stow n' Go® system and the elimination of the unpopular Swivel n' Go® Seating.
While the Volkswagen Routan is based upon the Chrysler minivans, it does not use the Stow n' Go® system, as it retains the older Easy-Out Roller Seats instead, keeping the SnG exclusive to Chrysler and Dodge.
With the upcoming Pacifica, SnG is re-designed once again to be made easier to use.

I am sorry I have to correct you, I just learned that the second row folding seats is an option and some vans do not stow those seats down. I made the mistake of buying one, the dealer assured me the seats were stow and go and they aren't.

  • @wonniewarrior

Very Nice. Do people use the compartment under middle seats stow position as convenient storage spaces instead when they don't fold it flat ? Looks very useful when want to hide a body or 2. Asking for a mob friend :). Seriously I wish we had these in Australia.

I dont understand why dodge/chrysler changed the stow n go seats to where you gotta fold and unfold the headrests.. that's just another thing that needs folded. My 07 has different headrests that are flush with the seat and dont need folded. Not sure why they changed it to be more complicated then original.
