Only one thing you missed and I would say a crucial moment (in a true collector's eye) is the upgrade of the ref.16570 to include the calibre 3186 rather than the 3185 for the last couple of years manufacture. Due to the limited production run, the cal.3186 ref.16570 has some serious potential to gain value. Of course, not in the same bracket as the final pre-ceramic GMT Masters which you already see going for £8.5k+ on the likes of Watchfinder. Other than that, nice overview of a truly historic model.

A very keen comment indeed. The 3186 was a superior movement to the 3185, and was a brief transition before the 3187 in the current Exp II models.

Oddly, I was never a fan of the original Explorer II dial until watching this. Now, it seems more preferable than the Sub-style dial used in the more modern Explorer II.

Good video and explanation on the evolution of the Explorer II. Just to be complete and accurate: - The first model after reference 1655 was the 16550, which was produced between 1984 and 1988 - The reference 16570 replaced it and was introduced in 1989 - All of the models used to illustrate the video between 4:22 and 8:14 are reference 16570 - The 16550 differs from the 16570 as it uses the movement 3085 rather than the 3185 - The movement 3085 is thicker than the 3185, which is the reason why the 16550 has a thicker case than the 16570 - The font of the numbers on the bezel of the 16550 are much bolder than the ones of the 16570 - From 2006 till 2011, the 16570 received an upgraded movement, the 3186

Good video, thanks! One comment about the bracelet on the newest version: it tapers significantly (more than any other modern Rolex I believe) from 21mm at the lugs down to 15mm at the clasp, so in my opinion still has the issue the Deepsea has with a rather weedy looking bracelet compared to the size of the watch head. It's the one think I don't like about mine, which is why I wear it mostly on a NATO.

Was contemplating the purchase of a Rolex Datejust turn-o-graph because I just love the white face, red second hand and red date numerals and thought I knew what I wanted but the more I look at others the less sure I am. Probably not a bad position to be in to be honest and I will figure it our ,videos like this help. thanks

That's a very good question. They denote the type of crown used. Twinlock crowns have a line (steel), 2 dots (white gold), or 1 dot (yellow gold). Triplock crowns feature 3 dots (steel), 2 small dots and 1 large dot (white gold) or 2 large dots and 1 small dot (yellow gold.)

A small correction: the first picture shown of the 1655 is, in fact, not an original 1971 model. The Mark I dial had a straight seconds hand. The lollipop hand was not added until the Mark II dial.

  • @impexRQ

Great presentation and I love every detail about it - the orange color against the mate black looks just amazing and unique... the hand on second time zone is unique and it’s far far more legible than the GMT Master ii- it has better proportions and its way comfortable in the wrist than a GMT or Submariner...in today’s watch world, every watch has a ceramic bezel and for me it losses it’s uniqueness... but the Explorer ii still conserve this amazing brush bezel ...I always take my Explorer ii when I’m traveling (the used of the second time zone is a blessing) as the GMT Master ii is too shiny and blinky and in today’s world situation, you want to avoid bad attention... the Explorer ii is definitely the best and the only real tool watch which Rolex produces currently
