Rolex Explorer II Polar... I Almost Sold it
I've had my Rolex Explorer II for 7 months now and a lot has changed. I love it right out of the gate, but my thoughts have ebbed and flowed. For those who follow the channel, you could probably tell in my review I considered selling this for a Pepsi GMT. I am not going to do that though. Here's why.

I bought myself for my 40th BD the new 2022 edition of your watch with the new caliber, new clasp and most importantly the anti reflective coating (Which shows more contrast to the polar dial). A year later, I came across your model “2007” and I really liked the vintage spirit of its design. And I told myself let me get it and gift it to my wife on her 40th BD since i already have the new model and so we can also hang out together wearing both watches together. Unfortunately, this plan did not work. Cause I fall in love with this unique timepiece in every aspect and I end up adding it to my collection. It’s my first vintage watch and its design grows in me every time I look at it. Despite having other models in my collection like the new Pepsi, Batman and a couple of JLCs but still nothing can give its reflection in my eyes. Sorry for the long message and thank you so much for your amazing video. BTW, love your ski shoots!! Thanks again and enjoy your long lasting honeymoon with this watch ;)

Glad to hear it! Enjoy. The watch bug definitely can cause intended gifts to change in their intent a little. Thanks for the note about the ski shots. Those weren't easy to grab.
Great video and your reasoning really resonates with me. I’ve tried on the 16570 and it’s a stunning watch, for me it’s just that little bit too small and so I’m fortunate enough to have been able to pick up new the 226570 almost a year ago. And wow, what a watch, I struggle to wear anything else and have made a ton of memories in mine. Like you I’m also after a Pepsi but right now I don’t think it would get any wrist time! Cheers.

Nice! The new explorer is an improved design for sure, just too big for my taste. I just got a Pepsi in for review and I still have been picking the polar
Congrats and great watch! I’m lucky to have 4 Rolex GMT’s including the 16750 Polar in my collection that I’ve added over the years and I love them all and wouldn’t sell any of them to go towards anything else. They’re wonderful timepieces and lifetime companions. Cheers

Great story! I bonded with my father over watches before he passed but I took him to New York for the first time in his 81-year life and surprise him by letting him witness me travel a long distance to buy a Rolex just has he had done in 1968. I was unable to get the Rolex but I wore a Seiko Monster on the trip and that watch is one of the most meaningful watches in my collection, second only to the yellow gold Day-Date he gave me in his last words. The Rolex will always be "dad's Rolex" and even though my eyes are welling up as I type this, I am saving those cathartic tears for when I finally get "the call" from my Rolex AD.

Very cool video! I bought my first nice watch, a Tag Heuer auto 2000, in ‘04. I had it on my wrist when I left active duty AF & drove around the US, when I got married, & when both of my sons were born. I don’t wear it as much as I should anymore, but to me my old Tag is priceless!

Had the 40mm Explorer II's in black and polar. Also have the 42mm in both iterations, which I ended up wearing (great watches), and not wearing the 40mm's ; so I traded out of them. I have a 7" wrist and find 39mm-42mm is my sweet spot. That being said I just ended up buying the 40mm Polar again, and am enjoying it. The 5 digit sport references are the most comfortable watches period. I would hold off buying a jubilee for your Polar, and put your money towards a GMT Master 16710 with a Jubilee. Also have the Tudor Pro, Pelagos 39 and the Chrono white dial. Like them all but again the 5 digit reference Rolex are so much more comfortable to wear.
Shows the emotional connection we can have with these time pieces, as opposed to our phone.

First and foremost, this 16570 is one of the most underrated Rolex of ALL-TIME. It's simply a beautiful watch let alone the best Explorer 2 definitely better than its modern counterpart. Second, you can't sell this watch anymore, it's simply PRICELESS with all the memories you've created with it. I would say that I wouldn't recommend buying on impulse especially with such a big purchase like with a Rolex. You've mentioned you wanted a vintage Pepsi and you should've gone with your gut in that case but nevertheless, this was a wonderful alternative.

I can definitely relate to feeling a new appreciation for a watch that had lost it's luster. I have never thought about selling my Explorer II but my appreciation for it has grown more and more as time has gone on. So much so that I have sold most of my collection and am down to 4 watches now.
I also have the 16570 Polar, bought it while stationed in Germany - LOVE IT FOREVER!! Very versatile, understated, & timeless!
Really cool video- Last week I sold my Rolex 126613LN for over retail and a nice exchange. The watch was receiving too much attention and comments and I really don't like that. It was only Rolex available at Store when I bought it. The Sub with its Ceramic bezel felt a bit toyish to me to be honest, was looking more for a tool watch. Today I'm wearing the Explorer 2 42 Polar and I'm the happiest person in the world. Love these watches from any generation. You can wear it anywhere with anything and its so beautiful and rare to see. Great video BTW!
@HarrisonElmore

That's totally fair! That's definitely a different flavor than your old sub! Enjoy the 42 has a heck of a great design and layout
I’m interested in a polar 16570 but with the hollow EL and tritium dial. I wanted to ask, do you find the lume on your super luminova to be fading to a cream color? In some of your shots the lume looks cream and in others it’s a stark white. How is it in person?
@HarrisonElmore
Жыл бұрын
It's more cream honestly than white in person. I think it's actually like a tinge of the green from the superluminova, but it looks just off-white. It's one thing that surprised me because I wanted it stark white
I have this watch in 2008 and I’m considering selling it but I bought it off my friend who was going through a divorce. You bought yours in Switzerland while on vacation……..you have to keep it. Good memories go with it. Great video.

I have the same watch and unfortunately sold it to a good friend of mine when I needed the cash. Lucky for me, a year later he needed some cash and I immediately bought it back. :-) ..Never making that mistake again I love this model.
I think it is more understated than a Submariner. I know what you mean about thick watches. I had a Speedster Mark II, and it was like a big pebble tied to the wrist.
Is that the correct box for this reference?
This is a very interesting insight. We at a point where it doesn’t matter which Rolex you want and it’s more about what they will sell you. Off all the Rolex I really appreciate the simplicity of this watch. I registered interest recently but look like a two year wait before I can buy it. What do you think?
@HarrisonElmore
Жыл бұрын
Don't know. I've been on a "waitlist" for a Sub for two years. Starting to think it doesn't exist. I think give it a year and they'll all be relatively available or around the same price as retail.
All of my watches are keepers for the reasons you mentioned. They all hold meanings that make them permanent parts of me.

Agreed! Then I keep looking to add more. It's a bad cycle
I have one. I bought it used in 2019 with the previous owner's engraved initials on the caseback, box and papers, and at least $1k below retail because of the engraving-which is invisible to anyone except me, therefore a bargain. Since the initials match the warranty card, they might actually add value. I went through the same ownership arc, and now I think it is the ultimate one-watch watch (although I have more, including a 1016, I wear this one the most).

Very good point about experiencing life with a watch deepens one's appreciation for it. Sitting in a box or safe is sterile. The Tudor BB Pro is ridiculously thick for the case size. Not interested. Still on a list with my AD to get the newest Explorer II with Polar dial. May end up with an IWC BP instead though.

A similar thing happened to me with my Explorer 114270. Now I’m glad I didn’t sell it.
After 30 years of collecting watches, I came to the conclusion that I can live with 2 watches: Explo 1 (39mm for me) and Explo 2 40mm (in black for me). They are both reliable, under the radar and cover all situations (from dress to casual wear) - and they keep their value. What else? Keep on the good job!
Is that ski footages Keystone Colorado?
I have one of these, a G-model with the 3186 in it. It has no bearing on the fun I have with my wife, or the places that I go.

Question: before you said it was under the radar, but now not so much. In regards to travel do you feel comfortable wearing it without drawing attention to yourself as other more recognizable Rolexes might? I’ve been looking into this watch and that is one aspect that appeals to me, a Rolex that is not “flashy” or draws unwanted attention when you are traveling and in unfamiliar places. Thoughts?

The exp 2 isn't a flashy watch at all, especially the black dial. Think about it this way. We as enthusiasts notice it because we know what it is. And of course the exp 2, especially the 16570 if you ask me, received more and more attention and appreciation over the last couple of years. However, your average Joe on the street generally isn't interested in what you wear on the wrist. That's at least my experience. So, I wouldn't worry about that particular topic too much.

I would agree with Luca. The black dial is definitely more under the radar. I think the fact that someone isn't wearing an Apple Watch and it has a metal bracelet is most of what draws attention (if it does at all). Most people don't care what you are wearing. I wore mine through Europe, but I understand some people don't like the risk of that. The white dial is a bit more loud, but I really wanted the white dial. White is definitely more tool - feeling. the black with the polished indices and hands does give it a more luxurious feeling to the wearer. Good luck deciding!

@@aaronmercado9874 I guess it's really a matter of personal preference. You can't go wrong either way. They're great and iconic watches. But like I said, don't worry or care about how noticeable these pieces are. It's like Harrison mentioned, the only thing people will maybe notice is that you don't wear a smart watch. So just pick the dial variant you feel the bigger connection with, enjoy the watch and use it like a Rolex is supposed to be used 👍 good luck

When a watch was produced and distributed to a store, it is just like the other thousands other pieces from the factory.
