    With this prologe and the death rattle (I'm standing over the body of a brother. I'm weeping. Is that his blood or mine? What have we done?) I think we may see gavilar as Odiam's champion. I could also see this prologe being a red Haring. But the death rattle (He must pick it up, the fallen title! The tower, the crown, and the spear!) Make me think that kal and dalinar aren't going to finish book 5 on a high note.

    I think the stormfather AND Tanavast were acting together since tanavast shouldn`t have died until the oath pact was broken, and it only brakes when one of the heralds "breaks" with out the ten of them being in Braize, I think... thats why when a herald dies, Tanavast freaks out saying "A Herald… A Herald has died… No. I am not ready… The Oathpact… No. They mustn’t see. The thing about the final truth being "I brought about the desolation" is... that it's not true. I think it would betray the fundamental idea of the Oaths if the ultimate Truth of a Lightweaver was "I am taking responsibility for something that isn't at all my fault." Killing her mother, fine, though as Hoid points out, what she really needs to learn is, I don't deserve to be punished because of this. I was being attacked, and I have the right to defend myself. I was a child and there was nothing better I could have done. Shallan had absolutely no reason to think that refusing to let her mom kill her would proximately cause a Desolation. Saying that Shallan is the reason for the Desolation is a terrible Truth, mostly because it isn't True. By that measure, it was her father's fault, for having a kid that was a surgebinder. It was Nale's fault, for convincing Chanarach to kill her own daughter. It was the fault of her ancestor for whatever made them a noble, starting the family line, without which Shallan wouldn't have existed, at least not in this form. There was never a point where Shallan knew that her actions would make a Desolation any more likely or even that they'd harm anyone other than the person currently trying to murder her. It's lunacy to even say she's responsible. If I'm walking down the street and I'm flipping a coin, and by chance that coin happens to reflect sunlight into a driver's eye, who is driving a truck full of toxic waste they didn't bother securing, and that moment's distraction causes them to get into a crash and now toxic waste is spilling over the town... would you say that this is the fault of the person who flipped a coin? That's the person who bears the responsibility for it? That somehow they should have known "flipping a coin" was going to kill thousands of people?

  • @MeMySkirtandI

    @MeMySkirtandI

    5 ай бұрын

    I said Shallan was instrumental, as in she was an instrument which contributed to the Desolation. You are correct just because she was an actual cause does not mean she is a proximate cause. Your coin flipping case is a great example of how an actual cause is not always a proximate cause (Palsgraff is the standard story). But, Shallan is not as emotionless and rational as us third-party observers. Just because she may not actually be guilty of causing Desolation, doesn't mean she won't feel guilty. So the Drama!

    @@MeMySkirtandI right, but that's not a very advanced truth. Her saying, i feel responsible when I'm not is more self delusion. I get that it would be natural for a person to feel that way. But the higher Ideals are supposed to be more difficult and more complex. Just saying, i feel everything is my fault, would be a pretty poor final Truth for Shallan. Like if Kaladins last Ideal turns out to be, i really do have to protect everyone, all the time.

Also, I think it was mentioned that the heralds are basically spren, maybe that, combined with his powers of connection, could lead to the ability of impersonating an actual spren and talk inside someone's head. As to why he would do such a thing, he must have known that the true desolation was coming, and thought that replacing one of the heralds with someone as strong as taln, they could extend the oathpact for ages to come.

    Fascinating... can't say I've read that particular WoB. I do not recall milk of any kind mentioned across the Stormlight Archive, which makes sense, given the crustacean nature of all Rosharan fauna outside of Shinovar. The Shin might have cows, and thus, access to milk, and thus, access to cheese, which could explain that. I suppose cheese would be a Shin delicacy? Regardless, rest assured I now sleep in the dairy section of the family delicatessen. [EDIT] Hang on... since cheese is primarily composed of various healthy bacteria, which are living, would that interfere with a Shardblade's cutting capacity? But that wouldn't make sense, then it wouldn't function at all as intended. Bacteria is everywhere. Still, cheese and yogurts are far more saturated with them, so maybe...?

    Regarding when you say the Stormfather is guiding Gavilar away from the First Ideal. You, just like Gavilar, are completely missing the point. We know from numerous times, mostly with the Windrunners, that saying the words out loud is the least important part of the Ideal. What Gavilar was missing when he just kept quoting passages, is that meaning is what matters. Look at the one thing he said that the Stormfather said was close. Give it to me, I need it. He's seething, he's desperate. He's not close to quoting the book... but what he's doing is *meaning* his words. That's the part you're completely missing. This passage is very specific, exactly because it's very close to the First Ideal. What the Stormfather is saying here is, you're not close... and look at his words. Because "guessing will not bring you to the Words". Because what he's saying is, you're just repeating random phrases like you're trying to hack someone's password. The Ideals are about meaning them. Skar and the Lopen show us that you can say the exact right words and it doesn't mean anything. Lift shows us that you can mean it, and not say anything out loud, and it still counts. That is the truth Gavilar (and, apparently, you) is missing, and what the Stormfather means here, and it's why Gavilar's demand is closer. Not because it's the right words or the right sentiment... but because at least it *is* sentiment.

    I get really, really tired of the whole "The Stormfather can't see inside buildings" thing. The Stormfather, many times, has been a presence around Dalinar, and been able to see what's around him. The comment in question comes when they're trying to spy on the entire planet, and the Stormfather mentions that the vision he uses to generate the map is what the storm sees, and thus can't go into buildings. At no point in any book does he blanket say, I am incapable of seeing inside a building in any way. And, we see him see inside of buildings many times. Of all the silly reasons to doubt this is the real Stormfather, this is by far the silliest. This is the part where people like Sharders make it the most obvious that they came up with a conclusion and now they're twisting facts to try and make them line up, rather than looking at the facts as they really are and seeing what conclusions arise.
