    I have always stored my sugar in Mason jars without vacuum sealing in a lower cupboard where it is cooler. I'm using sugar from 8 years ago.

    I've stored granulated sugar in dry, sanitized, 2 liter soda bottles for more than 10 years without any problems. Stored in a dry (relatively low humidity) dark pantry off our kitchen. An inexpensive alternative to mason jars and FoodSaver bags, that works!!

    @Nettie Reynolds That's sad. Getting to be the same situation on this side of the pond. I was at Walmart the first of the week. They were out of almost everything canning related. Our local supermarket still has a few cases of jars but no lids. Except for a few boxes of rings and lids. Hope you'll be able to find what you need soon. When the garden vegetable season slows down, perhaps stores will be able to keep a little more stock on the shelves.

    Genius!! Since watching this I've started using my brake bleeder to seal jars. Side note, I'm using my Food Saver to bleed the brakes. 😉😂 Loved the video.

    Sugar turns into a 'brick' when put in vacuum bags because of the atmospheric pressure on the bag after it's been vacuumed. In a jar the vacuum is still there but the jar is keeping the crushing force off the sugar, so it still flows. Good method if you have the jars and the space for them.

    I've used huge, glass pickle jars, washed in the dishwasher on the sanitize option. Dry extremely thoroughly, put 2 bay leaves in the bottom, dump in the sugar and place 2 more bay leaves on top. Put lid on...stays perfect for 2+ years. Have been doing this for 38 years. Never had a bug and never turned hard. My friend uses 2 liter plastic soda bottles, uses bay leaves. Her sugar is fine for 3+ years. The bay leaves add no flavor and keep the critters away.

    I'm on a Homestead Corner watching binge today. I don't have a vacuum sealer, so I'm going to try this method. I'm saving the plastic nut jars for food storage. Thank you for this suggestion. It answered some of my questions.

    We also do the dry products in 5lt empty dry water bottles with bay leaves. Some of it has been stored for 2 years already. Perfectly good.

    Jenny, I am the commenter from yesterday having trouble with my new brake bleeder. So I took it to my genius brother in law. He took it apart and found that some part was bent. He fixed it and lo and behold, we tested it on a couple of canning jars and it now works beautifully, just as you said!

    Wish mine worked. Brand new and I can’t get a suction on it. Tried all the adapters to no avail. He’s still figuring it out, so wish me and him luck..

    My wife & I were given 3 number 10 tins of sugar to use in canning golden plums for jam last week. The sugar was packed in 1994 and the jam is delicious despite the fact that oxygen absorbers had been used. It wasn’t as difficult to break up as I had anticipated.

    I store sugar with a Food Saver. 1. No oxygen absorbers. 2. Don't suction it, but remove the air. (It will clump if suctioned) 3. I keep the paper packaging on & use 4 pound bags of sugar. I put the whole thing in the Food Saver bag. It keeps forever.

    @@dirtyd9792 Newbie here. Quick question: Did you suction any air out, or just drop in the oxygen absorber? Did you leave it in the original bag and put the entire bag, unopened, in the vacuum bag with the absorber? Thanks in advance, if anyone gets this!

    I wrote to the FoodSaver company about the jar sealing kits, and they responded they did not know when they would have them in stock. This is definitely time to get storing your food. I sure wish I knew I needed that jar sealer now. In the meantime it's all going in sealer bags.

    I honestly cannot afford to can so I needed to make the decision: Food or canning supplies. I have to choose food. So, I have plastic bpa free bottles from food products etc and I have been storing beans and the like in them. I've placed these in the freezer or in the shelf I did manage to get some oxygen absorbers.... it's the best I can do......

    I store everything in Ziploc freezer bags with the air squeezed out. I do put the beans, rice, and flower in freezer for couple days first. Just made some rice last week and beans today, and they had been on shelf in basement for 4 years. They were perfect. I store everything in dark colored Tupperware bin. No light, no moisture. Works good for me.

    We store sugar and salt and 16 oz soda bottles we clean and Sterilize. Not been too worried about it Caking Up. Their small store easily and when you pull one out you've got 2 cups right there in the Palm of your hand.

    Brandie Bigham - For long-term storage the problem you have is sterilizing. A water bottle would melt and distort if boiled the length of time required to sterilize. So you would have to use a sterilizing solution like wine makers do to treat wine bottles. Plus scientists have discover that the type of plastic in water bottles always leach into the product, so they recommend they not be reused. I believe they are making them to break down over time due to landfill issues. Then how do you get them completely free of water? In canning sterilized things must remain hot until sealed, once boiled holding in a 225° oven works where the moisture can dry away works. All air has humidity and any time there is moisture you have the potential of mold. Therein lies the problems that needs resolved for storing any dry product long term. If you freeze your products for 3-5 days before packaging you will kill any insect/eggs that might be within your food product that came directly from the store. All flour-type products, even oats, run that risk. Baking with the flour kills anything off normally, but it is a different story in long-term storage in less than ideal climate circumstances. Canning jars can be sterilized in this manner, while pre-sterilized bags avoid dealing with this issue all together.

    We clean bottles with dishwashing liquid then sterilize with a bleach solution allowed to dry for up to a week( upside down in a large closed container). We never store flour in these bottles, Only salt and sugar. Before we seal the bottles we allow the product to settle until the bottles were almost level full.

    Jim Wright I imagine you could also store white rice and beans/lentils in this manner. I believe I have seen The Provident Prepper and others do these things with your same cleansing/sterilization method. ❤️

    Great tip! I buy pasta sauce that comes in a canning type jar. Canning lids fit on them and I've never had any problems using them for canning. Over the years I've accumulated several dozen for free.

    Word of warning please be careful doing that, my grandma and I were using those type jars and mayo jars I was taking a jar out of the canner scalding hot and the ring slipped Right off the jar the jar hit the floor busted don't know if it was just a fluke or what we had been canning with them for years trying to use what we had to save money 🤔but sometimes you gotta do what it takes to survive and to get the job done.👍🏻

    @@jennystarnes180 You're right about that. You have to make sure the jar is a canning type jar and that standard canning lids fit on them. Glass is glass. I don't think Bell canning jars are made with Gorilla glass or something like that.

    I keep my white sugar in 6 gallon food grade buckets with gamma seal lids. Sugar is one of those items, like salt, that store for longer than I'll be alive. No need to go to all of that work and expense.

    i pick up lids every time i go to certain stores , must have cose to 100 boxs , my thought is if the grid go,s down your not going to be able to get them then. also sggest get next years seeds now as insurance

    Lids are hens’ teeth scarce around here right now. Jar sets showed up on our Meijer shelf this week, 4 ounce & quart only. Individual jars (with lid/rim) as well, but at $1.79 each.

    Nettie Reynolds a break bleeder is a tool for breaks on your car, but it is perfect for a non electric vacuum sealing option for jars. We can’t get lids here in the US either... some places have jars with lids and some places you can’t even get jars.

    Did you get them? Because there are scam artists out there. Let me guess they took your cc information and told you it would be 6 weeks. I would do a direct site of reusable lids only. Do some looking into the site itself. Ball don't ship there lids direct to first party and have not for over a year.

    @@HomesteadCorner I need to ask you a big favor if you cannot that will be fine. I need to know how to can my October beans in a quart jar it has been years I really have forgotten how to do them I know how to do tomatoes and green beans but I forgot how to do my October beans and how much to put in the jar and how long to pressure cook. And if you don't care I got banana peppers need to know how to do them and and green bell peppers. I got half a bushel have a half a bushel banana peppers. Like I said it's been a long time. before I lost mine Ball canning books when our house burned down so I haven't got them. And the neighbor Next Door be good enough to give us these vegetables yesterday. I hope will not be a problem if it is that is okay thank you very much and I hope you can read this because I can not worst things right right

    @@DK-jg5vk Yes! I struggled for years with hard brown sugar. I finally gave up and started making syrup out of it. That was before I discovered the grater idea. However, my brown sugar doesn't get hard any more. I have a ceramic disk (made of clay like the flowerpots) that I soak in water and put in with it, and it stops it from getting hard. It's similar to the brown sugar bears that you can buy.

    Roberta's Favorites It’s the oxygen absorbers that cause the sugar to become brick hard. They are unnecessary for sugar. White sugar lasts forever if kept dry in the food grade white buckets

    I reuse lids too.. With the shortages, I'm sure many are doing the same. I don't reuse for canning, any lid.. That had any kind of tomatoes or tomatoes products. But.. Jellies, dehydrated foods, dry pastas and rices.. I was doing before the shortage.. I believe today, we'll all have to choose our battles.. Or possibly go hungry. Thanks for sharing. Peace.

    Nettie Reynolds I believe the tomatoes have a high acid content. Unless the lids were used for dried tomatoes...the won’t be good for much else. Maybe not even good for other dried storage items.

    I found jars and lids at the local hardware stores. Found some at thrift stores. Just run your finger over top of the rim to check for chips.

    So I’m starting to prep a little. I have canned veggies and I watch the expiration dates. Watching you vacuum seal and can stuff has me wanting to invest because although I don’t use sugar and flour anymore but in a crisis or disaster I would benefit from having those two items. You look so prepared that the way I want things to be especially once I buy a house. Thanks for the information

    Just watched a video where they used paper lunch bags food it over top (not rolled). Then vacuum sealed in a bag video was of flour but I tried it with sugar worked great for me.

    I store three 4lb bags of Sugar in a metal 50 caliber ammo can with a rubber seal on the lid. Yes, I have a butt load of New 50 caliber ammo cans. I won't put anything but ammo in Army Surplus Cans. Have a Blessed Day everyone.

    I just store 25 pounds of sugar in five gallon Mylar bags in a five gallon bucket. I don’t use any oxygen absorbers because when sugar is squeezed airtight it clumps. As long as you squeeze the majority of the sugar out and seal the Mylar good, that sugar will last forever. I only store my sugar I am actively using in mason jars in the kitchen, but because I like to stock up my preps in no less than 25 pounds at a time (I also have one gallon Mylar bags with up to 5 pounds of various foods in them in case I don’t need to break open a five gallon bucket) I usually always store everything in Mylar.     1) Air is primarily NITROGEN. Not oxygen. 2) Oxygen absorbers do not remove air. They only capture the oxygen in the container. 3) Without oxygen in the container there is no MOISTURE in the container. And THAT is why the sugar will brick. Sugar - especially brown sugar - will brick without some degree of humidity/moisture.

    I just saved my brick hard brown sugar by putting a hamburger bun in with it. Used a gallon zip lock bag and it softened up in a couple of days. Sweet😊

    Late comment here, but my Walmart has been completely out of bags of sugar for a couple of weeks. The WM brand was the first to go, but by the second week people had bought all the more expensive Dominos brand, too. I've got a couple of quarts jars vacuum sealed in the pantry, fortunately.

    You can use a piece of tape (leaving a fold for removal) on the lid and use a perminent marker to identify the contents. Then when you need to change it just pull it off.

    @jean. I use the painters blue tape in my kitchen. For freezer -- never comes off till I pull it off.

    I found craft mason like jars work very well for storing dry foods! They are inexpensive compared to mason jars! I don’t use them for canning tho! They are too thin for that!

    Folks, you'll probably find what your looking for, but just a clarification on terminology. That hand pump is an automotive vacuum pump. It can be used for brake bleeding, but it's not a brake bleeder.

    Not true bout Mylar bucket have worked for years but do not use obsorbers. Jars get hard as well

    Duck Tape. So many cool designs & colors ( Craft sections..Walmart)..around lids, it just help keep out air that could possibly sip in......Provident Preppers..must to see...

    That’s what I did! And then my sealer on the food saver broke. Still trying to get the brand new break bleeder to work…no luck yet it’s sooo maddening!! Looks so easy, but mine won’t suck!! It sucks….LOL……

    Im confused(doesn't take much to get me that way!). At the beginning you said not to vacuum seal when you were talking about using mylar and the foodsaver bags. Then at the end you used the brake bleeder on the jar. Was that because you don't mind if it becomes hard because it can be broken up? Is the sugar hardening the only deciding factor between vacuum sealing and not vacuum sealing? Thx!

    I just bought a break bleeder from E bay it is bran new never used and the gage is set at 7 1/7 is that right t I thought it was supposed to be at 0 thank you for your help and your teaching

    a piece of bread will soften sugar and hard cookies , just put it in the sugar bag and seal overnight.

    What about brown sugar, I’ve been putting in Tupperware would the jars keep it fresher on last longer? I use the break bleeder to works great. I put nuts, and snacks cause there’s just 2 of us and they don’t get stale that way.

    I have looked all over and cannot find a jar sealer anywhere to go with my Food Saver, so I will probably have to put sugar in Food Saver bags and then put them in plastic buckets.

    Whatever size you want. If alone, maybe pints. If family, quarts. Whatever works, but do it soon or risk doing without. Same with flour Do not get whole wheat flour. It is obviously more nourishing as it still contains the germ but after a few months the Geron will go rancid and your flour will not be good. Only by white flour. I buy flour that has baking soda,, etc in it but add more.. also, buy sugar, white and brown. Whatever you need, buy now. Chocolate chips? Buy now.

    I just put my sugar in gallon jars and good for years. No vacuum. When I vacuum it turns to brick.

    Hi HC! Can I put my split peas, northern beans and lentils into the canning jars and do the brake bleeder to seal the jar? Instead of the dry canning? I'm a little scared of doing the dry canning. I was able to purchase 6 half-gallon jars a few days ago. Thank you for your assistance!

    You sure can... I would just toss them in the freezer for 2-3 days (to make sure there is no lava on them), then let them go back to room temp for 2 days (so no condensation) then seal them up! 💕🇺🇲

    If the sugar turns into a brick.. use a cheese grater and shave it as needed.. I just saw this on a short video.

    Is there any reason why I could not reuse spaghetti sauce jars for storing sugar? I have tons of these Atlas Mason jars that I saved after we ate the sauce. The regular mouth lids & rings fit these jars--I understand these jars are not reusable for canning purposes. I am just starting to use the vacuum sealer, so this is a little new to me. thx :)

    Yes, use the jars. They are mason jars, you can use them for canning too.

    You can, you want a good tight fitting lid, and they may clump a little, but nothing you can't break up by shaking.😀
